HBL remain on top with big win

A round-up of the fourth day of the eighth round of Division One of the Quaid-e-Azam Trophy

ESPNcricinfo staff13-Dec-2010Habib Bank Limited continued their reign at the top of the table, crushing Water and Power Development Authority by an innings and 107 runs at the Diamond Club Ground in Islamabad. WAPDA floundered in their attempt to survive the final day after being reduced to 9 for 2 at stumps the previous day. Seamer Fahad Masood and Danish Kaneria were the wreckers-in-chief, grabbing four wickets each to bring an early end to the WAPDA resistance. They had reduced WAPDA to 69 for 6 before the lower order chipped in with useful contributions to delay what seemed inevitable. But 45.5 overs was all WAPDA managed to face, with Umaid Asif’s 34 as their top score, and were bowled out for 163. The first-innings lead of 270 proved too much, and HBL surged to 57 points. WAPDA remain at No.2.Faisalabad thumped Islamabad by 136 runs at the Iqbal Stadium in Faisalabad to take the ninth place in the points table, just ahead of their opponents. Faisalabad were favourites to clinch the game after reducing Islamabad to 83 for 3 in their chase of 341 at stumps on the third day. Though the middle order got starts – Zeeshan Mushtaq made 47, captain Rauf Akbar chipped in with 26, Imad Wasim made 28 – it failed to consolidate. Seamer Ahmed Hayat picked up three wickets while offspinner Aqeel Ahmed snared four to bowl out Islamabad for 204.A career-best, unbeaten 211 from Haris Sohail helped Zarai Taraqiati Bank Limited gain a first-innings lead against National Bank of Pakistan at the Jinnah Stadium in Sialkot. In their response to NBP’s score of 370, ZTBL were in a good position to take a lead at stumps on the third day, when they finished on 326 for 6 with centurion Sohail at the crease. But they were reduced to 358 for 8 on the fourth morning, and faced the risk of conceding points. But Sohail found support from No.9 and 10. Mohammad Khalil (44) and Sohail were involved in a 106-run stand for the ninth wicket that took ZTBL into the lead and last man Rehan Riaz made a handy 24 to help stretch the score to 530. ZTBL are on third place in the points table, NBP are sixth.Rawalpindi eased to an eight-wicket win over Karachi Blues at the Rawalpindi Cricket Stadium. Seamers Sadaf Husain and Rashid Latif helped themselves to five-wicket hauls and Rawalpindi snapped up the two remaining wickets for not much after they had reduced their opponents to 176 for 8 at stumps on the third day. Karachi only managed a lead of 100 and opener Naved Malik’s half-century helped knock it off in under 18 overs. With the win, Rawalpindi found themselves at fifth place, while Karachi were second from the bottom.

Man City in talks with Sterling over new deal

Manchester City are in the midst of a tense battle to secure the Premier League title as well as being in the mix to secure the Champions League.

Even though Pep Guardiola’s side have some big games left to play, it seems as though a clue has emerged over one potential behind the scenes deal that the club will look to secure in the coming months.

What’s the news?

Journalist and transfer expert Fabrizio Romano recently took to his Twitter page to share an update regarding the future of City winger Raheem Sterling and the possibility of him signing a new contract with the club.

He said: “Man City have discussed with Sterling on [a] potential new deal.”

The Manchester club signed the winger back in the 2015 summer transfer window from Liverpool in a deal worth a reported fee of £49m.

Since then, the Englishman has gone on to make a total of 333 appearances for the club across all competitions prior to their first-leg semi-final clash against Real Madrid in the Champions League.

Guardiola will be delighted

In those games, the 27-year-old has fired in 128 goals and provided 93 assists, winning numerous trophies in the process.

His current contract at the Etihad Stadium is set to expire in the summer of 2023 and thus, penning him down to new terms will surely leave Guardiola elated.

With ten league goals under his belt this season, only Kevin De Bruyne (11) and Riyad Mahrez (11) have found the net on more occasions, showing how important the England international can be for the team.

To further highlight how much of an attacking threat the winger has been in this campaign, he has the highest percentage for shots on target out of any other City player to have more than seven attempts at goal.

Also, only four other players have racked up more shot-creating actions than the former Liverpool ace who has 74 to his name, which is more than the likes of Phil Foden, Ilkay Gundogan and Gabriel Jesus among others.

Taking all of this into account, if the club were able to tie Sterling down with a new contract, this would surely delight Guardiola, who has shared his praise and admiration for the attacker in the past.

James Garner could be Keane 2.0 for MUFC

Manchester United are renowned for taking their academy prodigies and turning them into superstars for the club, with Anthony Elanga the latest to break through the youth setup to make his mark on the first team this season, and another graduate is emerging as the next rising star for the club to introduce into their side in the future.

Dean Henderson, Paul Pogba, Marcus Rashford, Jesse Lingard, Scott McTominay are all current first team players and popular Premier League players that broke through Manchester United’s academy over time and James Garner could be the next player to follow in their footsteps, thanks to a successful season on loan at Nottingham Forest.

The Lancashire club has been crying out for a defensive midfielder with complete attributes to join their side for many seasons now, and they may already have the answer under their nose, saving themselves millions of pounds, if they take a chance on deploying Garner into their midfield next season.

The midfielder who was hailed a “winner” by Forest boss Steve Cooper, is enjoying his first real taste of first team football in the Championship with the Nottingham side, tallying up 26 appearances in the second tier this season so far.

Garner has already scored two goals and three assists for the club so far, with the 20-year-old picking up the second highest rating on average in the entire Nottingham Forest squad this season (7.09) according to SofaScore.

It comes as no surprise that he is so highly rated when you look at his statistics in the league with the player winning the majority of his duels (52%), successful in the majority of his dribbles (65%), creating four big chances and is making 1.7 tackles on average per game.

In fact, only Bruno Fernandes has created more chances in the Manchester United midfield than Garner has for Nottingham Forest, so with that being said not only is he clearly clinical in his defensive play, he is a much more creative player this season compared to the players starting at his parent club.

With that aggressive box to box style of play in mind, he could well be another Roy Keane for the Red Devils, providing strength in the tackle but also a willing option in attacking phases of play.

As a result, the club should be taking a closer look at what Garner could bring to the first team at Old Trafford, and with a new manager set to be appointed in the summer, it could be a good opportunity for the youngster to integrate into the future of the team.

Manchester United: Sky Sports drop on-air Erik ten Hag update

Sky Sports have dropped a live TV update on Manchester United and their pursuit of Ajax boss Erik ten Hag.

The Lowdown: United closing in?

It seems as if the Red Devils are looking to get a deal for Ralf Rangnick’s long-term replacement in place before the summer.

United officials spoke with both Ten Hag and Mauricio Pochettino last month, with a move for Ten Hag now gathering pace.

The Telegraph revealed on Wednesday evening that United are close to appointing the Dutch manager at Old Trafford, with negotiations moving very quickly.

The Latest: Sky Sports update

Sky Sports senior reporter Melissa Reddy dropped a live TV update on Thursday regarding United and Ten Hag.

Reddy revealed that United have insisted that no deal has been signed with Ten Hag. However, ‘sources close to Ten Hag and Ajax’ told Sky Sports that compensation and an ‘announcement’ have been discussed regarding the 52-year-old, with formalities expected to be completed soon.

The Verdict: A matter of time?

It looks as if it is now just a matter of time until Ten Hag is announced as Manchester United’s next permanent manager.

The club have done extremely well when it comes to working behind the scenes for Ten Hag, who is leading his side in a title race with PSV.

Finalising a move before May should give the Red Devils the best possible chance of a successful rebuild, instead of the club searching for a new boss during the summer window.

Aston Villa: Ings exit would be ‘surprise’

Pete O’Rourke has said that it would be a shock if Danny Ings left Aston Villa this summer amid reported interest from Brighton and Hove Albion.

The lowdown

Villa paid a reported £25m to land the striker from Southampton during last summer’s transfer window, making him the fifth-biggest signing in their history.

The Englishman, who has been dubbed a ‘special’ player by Sky Sports pundit Paul Merson, signed a three-year contract worth £120,000 per week, the highest salary on the club’s books.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/aston-villa-latest-developments/” title=”Aston Villa latest developments!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

After 23 appearances for Villa, Ings has only managed to score five goals, although he has also provided five assists.

Nonetheless, he is on course to finish on his lowest goal tally in the top flight since the 2018/19 season, and Football Insider reported earlier in March that Brighton were hopeful of capturing him in a few months’ time.

The latest

Speaking to GiveMeSport, O’Rourke admitted that he would be somewhat stunned if Steven Gerrard were to sanction Ings’ exit from Villa so quickly.

The journalist said: “It would come as a surprise because Danny Ings arrived last year as a real secret deal. Nobody saw it coming.”

The verdict

Would it really be all that much of a surprise if Ings were to be jettisoned after only a year at Villa Park? There are other strikers in the equation here.

According to The Athletic’s Gregg Evans, Gerrard has his eye on Luis Suarez, who is likely to be available on a free transfer following the expiry of his Atletico Madrid contract in the summer.

There is also 19-year-old Cameron Archer, who has underlined his potential this season with four goals in the Carabao Cup for Villa and five in the Championship during his loan spell at Preston North End.

There may not be a way to accommodate all of these players, and perhaps the £19.8m-rated Ings, who is three years older than Ollie Watkins and has scored two fewer goals this season, will be the casualty.

West Ham handed huge injury boost

West Ham United have been handed a huge boost ahead of their upcoming Premier League fixture this Saturday.

What’s the latest?

That’s according to Tom Clark’s recent report for Football.London, in which the West Ham correspondent revealed that both Kurt Zouma and Tomas Soucek are back in contention for the trip to Manchester United this weekend, as the duo are set to return to training this week following their respective recoveries from injury and illness.

Central midfielder Soucek has been unavailable for selection for the Hammers’ last two fixtures after falling ill due to the ongoing viral pandemic, while centre-back Zouma has been absent for six weeks after picking up a hamstring injury in the 3-2 win over Chelsea in December.

Fans will be buzzing

Considering just how important both Soucek and Zouma are within David Moyes’ squad, the news that the duo could make a return to first-team football this weekend is sure to have left the London Stadium faithful buzzing.

Indeed, over Zouma’s 11 Premier League appearances this season, the £28.8m-rated defender has helped his side keep two clean sheets and scored one goal, as well as making an average of 1.2 interceptions, 0.6 tackles, 5.2 clearances and winning 60% of his duels per game.

These returns have seen the £120k-per-week man average a SofaScore match rating of 6.91, ranking him as the Hammers’ joint 10th-best player in the top flight of English football.

Meanwhile, over Soucek’s 20 league outings, the £40.5m-rated midfielder has scored three goals, registered one assist and created one big chance for his teammates, as well as making an average of 1.5 interceptions, 2.3 tackles, three clearances and winning 6.7 duels per fixture.

These metrics have seen the £47k-per-week man average a SofaScore match rating of 6.99, ranking him as Moyes’ seventh-best performer in the division.

As such, it is clear for all to see that the return of both players will come as a huge boost to West Ham’s chances of leaving Old Trafford with all three points on Saturday afternoon – a result that would very much strengthen the Hammers’ top-four credentials this season.

Wolves’ £25m bid rejected for Badiashile

In terms of incoming transfers this month, Wolves have secured a deal for Japan midfielder Hayao Kawabe from Swiss Super League side Grasshopper Club Zurich. He is expected to return to Switzerland on loan to complete the season with Grasshoppers after spending January in the Black Country.

With three-and-a-half weeks still left until the window shuts, it seems as though the Old Gold have been dealt a blow in their attempts to add a new player to Bruno Lage’s squad, one which will leave their fans gutted.

What’s the news?

According to a recent article from French media outlet L’Equipe (via Sport Witness), Wolves have had an offer of €30m (£25m) for AS Monaco defender Benoit Badiashile rejected by the Ligue 1 club.

As a product of Monaco’s youth system, the 20-year-old has already made more than 100 senior appearances for the club, scoring three goals and providing three assists along the way, showing how highly he is rated in the principality and presumably why they have reportedly rejected Wolves’ offer for him.

Standing at 6 foot 4, Badiashile has played in 19 games for Monaco across all competitions so far this season, highlighting his importance to the team and why they would be reluctant to let him leave this month for a fee they don’t see as suitable for his services.

With Wolves seeing Romain Saiss jet off to take part in the Africa Cup of Nations after playing in all 19 of their Premier League games so far this season, it’s easy to see why the Old Gold would be looking at bringing in a defender like Badiashile this month to not only fill in for Saiss but also potentially become a long-term figure in their squad for the future given his young age.

Moving forward, if Wolves are serious about signing the 20-year-old in January, they should try to establish what sort of fee Monaco would be willing to accept for him and then decide whether it is feasible.

If they aren’t willing to pay whatever the French club would want for him, then Lage may need to look at other options who would be available for less than Badiashile. He could also give Dion Sanderson, who was recently recalled from his loan spell with Birmingham City, the chance to prove himself in the team as an even cheaper option.

That could help to soften the significant blow of seeing a sizeable bid for the Monaco youngster rejected.
