He’d walk into Rosenior’s team: Chelsea plot move to sign their own Rice

The new year has already brought about immense change for Chelsea Football Club.

Before midday on the first, it was already announced that the club had parted ways with Enzo Maresca, following a tense few weeks.

In his place, under-21 manager Calum McFarlane took charge of the game away to Manchester City, and despite being massive underdogs, oversaw a valiant 1-1 draw.

The man who looks primed to take charge of the team permanently seems to be Liam Rosenior, and in excellent news for him, Chelsea are reportedly eyeing up a move for someone who could end up being his own Declan Rice.

Chelsea target their own Declan Rice

With Maresca out of the picture, Chelsea need to bring in a permanent manager as soon as possible, and while nothing has been confirmed, it seems almost certain that Rosenior will be the man who gets the job.

Transfer Focus

Mega money deals, controversial moves and big-name flops. This is the home of transfer news and opinion across Football FanCast.

The Englishman might be less experienced than some fans would like, but he’s already a part of BlueCo and has done a reasonably impressive job in charge of Strasbourg.

For example, since taking over the French outfit, the 41-year-old has overseen 63 games and averaged 1.75 points per game.

However, to ensure he has the best chance of succeeding in West London, the board must hand him the best tools, which is what they appear determined to do.

At least, that is according to a recent report from Spain, which claims Chelsea are among several teams interested in Adam Wharton.

Alongside the Blues, the report states that Manchester City, Liverpool, Manchester United and Real Madrid are all keen on the Crystal Palace star.

Unfortunately, the competition isn’t the only potential hurdle for this deal, as reports from late last year claimed that the 21-year-old could cost as much as £100m.

Therefore, it could be a costly and complicated transfer for Chelsea to get over the line, but given Wharton’s immense ability and potential, one they should fight for, especially as he could be Rosenior’s own Rice.

Why Wharton would be Chelsea's Rice

While there are certainly some differences between Rice and Wharton, there are more than a few similarities, even down to their potential transfers.

For example, the former moved from one London club to another, and if Chelsea were to sign the latter, he too would be moving from one capital side to another.

Moreover, both would be moving for near enough the same amount, with the Gunners spending around £105m on their number 41, and as incredibly hyped stars, with one analyst dubbing the Palace star “the best U21 player in the Prem.”

The Eagles’ young star is also now a regular feature in senior England squads, and while his three caps pale in comparison to the former West Ham United captain’s 72, there is no doubt that he will eventually amass a considerable number of them.

Another impressive feat that the pair share is that they’ve both played a crucial role in their clubs, or, in Rice’s case, former club, winning major silverware.

For example, the 26-year-old captained the Hammers to Conference League glory in 2023, and the 21-year-old helped the South Londoners win the FA Cup last year.

Finally, both internationals are versatile midfielders, capable of playing as either a six or an eight.

This ability to influence all phases of play is translated into Wharton’s underlying numbers.

For example, according to FBref, the “generational” talent, as dubbed by former Sky Sports employee Matthew Stanger, ranks in the top 2% of midfielders in Europe’s top five leauges for expected assisted goals, the top 7% for through balls, the top 8% for shot-creating actions, the top 9% for goal-creating actions, the top 10% for ball recoveries and more, all per 90.

Ultimately, it would require a significant financial commitment, but Chelsea should do all they can to sign Wharton, as he could become Rosenior’s own Rice.

Hammers ace impressed with crop of exciting youngsters

West Ham’s Mark Noble has told the club’s official website he is excited by the wealth of young talent in the Hammers’ ranks.

An academy graduate himself, 25-year-old Noble believes the club’s promising youngsters will soon be competing for first team places at Upton Park.

West Ham’s academy is well known for producing talented players. Rio Ferdinand, Frank Lampard, Joe Cole, Glen Johnson and Michael Carrick, have all gone on to win trophies and play for England after rising through the ranks at the Hammers’ academy.

Currently, the Hammers have several former academy players in the first team squad including Jack Collison, James Tomkins, Jordan Spence, Rob Hall and Dan Potts, as well as Mark Noble.

The central midfielder has identified several academy players who could soon make an impact on the West Ham first team.

“I think Jordan[Spence], Moncs [George Moncur], Hally [Rob Hall], Matthias [Fanimo], young Leo [Chambers] – who has travelled with us to the last two Premier League games and been on the bench – and the others are doing well,” said the Hammers’ vice-captain.

“If they keep on grafting, don’t let it go to their heads when they travel with the first team and put it in when they play for the Development Squad, then they will keep enjoying it and keep moving forward.”

West Ham are currently six points clear at the top of Barclays U21 Premier League Group 1, under the leadership of coach Ian Hendon. Noble believes their successes at youth level will soon allow the young Hammers to progress into the first team, but admits they face a tough road ahead if they are to make it in the Premier League.

“We have got a good crop of young players and they will soon be pushing the seniors for their places. The Premier League is obviously a tough league to come into – I learnt that as a 17-year-old that it’s a tough ask and you’ve got to be mentally capable to do that – but hopefully they can keep pushing us,” Noble added.

West Brom target Anderlecht striker

West Brom are lining up a summer move for Anderlecht forward Dieumerci Mbokani, according to reports from The Metro.

The Baggies will have to approach next season without Romelu Lukaku, whose impressive form at The Hawthorns has led to Chelsea refusing to grant him another temporary move to the Midlands.

Steve Clarke is keen to replace the teenager, and sees Mbokani as the ideal man to fill the void left by the burly Belgian.

The Democratic Republic of Congo international has been attracting attention from a number of European clubs of late, but has recently admitted that he would jump at the chance of a move to the Premier League.

“I want to play in England and I can confirm that there is some interest at the moment,” he said.

“Let’s relax and see what happens by the end of June.”

Newly promoted Hull are also keen on the striker, but West Brom are thought to be leading the race, with Lukaku having advised Mbokani to join the Midlanders

However, Anderlecht are believed to be holding out for a fee in the region of £17million for their star man, after witnessing the impact Christian Benteke – who moved to the Premier League from Belgium – has had.

Could Dieumerci Mbokani mirror the impacts of Romelu Lukaku and Christian Benteke?

Leeds: Hay and Smyth react to Andres Clavijo exit

Leeds United correspondents Phil Hay and Graham Smyth have been reacting to Andres Clavijo’s Elland Road exit.

The Lowdown: Clavijo’s exit

The Whites decided to sack Marcelo Bielsa on Sunday after a 4-0 defeat to Tottenham at Elland Road, leaving them just two points above the bottom three.

Former RB Leipzig manager Jesse Marsch has since been announced as the Argentine’s successor and has already brought in Cameron Toshack as number two.

Bielsa’s assistants, Diego Reyes, Pablo Quiroga and Luis Ouvina followed the former boss out of Thorp Arch, along with fitness coach Benoit Delaval.

Performance analyst Clavijo, known better by fans for being Bielsa’s translator, confirmed on Wednesday evening that he too would also be leaving the club.

The Latest: Hay and Smyth react

This is what Hay had to say in reply to Clavijo’s update on Twitter.

“A nice guy, Andres. Very much part of the weekly press routine with Bielsa. Best of luck to him.”

Meanwhile, Smyth posted a short clip of Bielsa and Clavijo, available to view here, and wished him well.

The Verdict: Not a shock

It seemed to be just a matter of time until Clavijo’s departure was confirmed, so the news doesn’t exactly come as a surprise.

He was brought in by Bielsa, unlike goalkeeper coach Marcos Abad and head of analysis Guillermo Alonso, who look set to stay at the club after previously working under Victor Orta at Middlesbrough.

Marsch has already made his mark by bringing in Toshack, along with Franz Schiemer and Mark Jackson, and you’d expect there could be more staff additions to come between now and the end of the season.

Everton end Cazoo sponsorship

Adam Jones has now dropped a big behind-the-scenes reveal involving Everton’s ending of their sponsorship agreement with Cazoo.

The Lowdown: Agreement ends

Writing in his latest piece for The Athletic, Patrick Boyland has revealed that the Goodison Park faithful’s sponsorship deal with Cazoo will now conclude at the end of the season.

The car dealers have been sponsoring their shirts since the summer of 2020, and the termination is not connected to the invasion of Ukraine by Russia – the Toffees announced this week that three other sponsors would be suspended due to recent events.

The Merseyside club are also taking ‘positive steps’ to find a replacement, with their deal with Cazoo thought to be worth roughly £10m a year.

The Latest: Jones reveal

Taking to Twitter following the big sponsorship update, the Liverpool Echo journalist Jones has now given some more detail on the news, revealing that it was a decision made by the Toffees, rather than Cazoo themselves:

“Understand these discussions took place before the turn of the year, and this was a decision the Blues took rather than the other way round.”

The Verdict: Slightly worrying

Given the fact that the Blues have already suspended deals with Russian companies USM Holdings, MegaFon, and Yota, albeit rightly so, it is slightly worrying that another has bitten the dust in Cazoo.

As Boyland details, losing all of them could mean an annual shortfall of close to £30m, which will need to be made up as soon as possible.

West Ham: Clarke drops Rice hint

Declan Rice looks set to start West Ham United’s Europa League round of 16 first leg tie against Sevilla this evening.

What’s the latest?

That’s according to a claim made by Tom Clarke, with the West Ham correspondent revealing in a recent article for football.london that – despite the midfielder missing the 1-0 defeat to Liverpool with a virus, as well as claims suggesting the 23-year-old is touch and go for Thursday – the England international is now expected to start at the Ramon Sanchez-Pizjuan Stadium.

In his report, Clarke writes: “David Moyes is expected to make changes to his side that put in an excellent, albeit fruitless, performance against Liverpool on the weekend with Declan Rice set to return to the side.

“Rice missed out at Anfield after contracting a virus but the Hammers key midfielder is set for a return to the starting XI in Seville this evening.”

Supporters will be ecstatic

Considering just how impressive Rice has been for West Ham in the current campaign, the news that the midfielder is set to start what is arguably the Hammers’ biggest game of the season is sure to have left the London Stadium faithful ecstatic.

Indeed, the £75m-rated Irons talisman has proven over the course of the last 12 months that he is one of the leading defensive midfielders in world football.

FBREF ranks him in the top seven per cent of all midfielders in Europe’s big five leagues for passes completed, as well as the top six per cent for progressive carries of the ball, the top 25 per cent for dribbles completed, the top four per cent for interceptions and the top 23 per cent for both non-penalty goals and assists.

As such, it is clear to see that Rice’s return to the starting XI against Sevilla will significantly increase the Hammers’ chances of leaving Spain with a positive result – something that would come as a huge boost to their odds of progressing to the next round of the competition.

Tottenham: Conte eyes Depay swap deal

As per Spanish journalist Albert Roge of Sport, there has been a big update regarding Tottenham Hotspur’s pursuit of Memphis Depay.

The Lowdown: Lilywhites make formal offer for Depay…

Reports have emerged over the last week of Spurs making a pre-summer bid to sign the former Manchester United winger, with there even being claims that Barcelona are likely to accept it.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/tottenham-latest-news-copy/” title=”Tottenham latest developments!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

European sources believe that the Catalans’ financial situation puts them in a difficult spot as Camp Nou president Joan Laporta eyes player sales to get the club out of ‘the red’ (Foot Mercato). As a result, Depay is one man on the summer chopping block despite his fine 2021/22 La Liga form under Barcelona boss Xavi.

Despite claiming that things aren’t quite as advanced in regards to Tottenham’s move, Sport have shared an interesting update.

The Latest: Reguilon swap on the cards?

Writing for the outlet, journalist Roge claimed that Spurs, and by extension manager Antonio Conte, are admirers of the Netherlands international – going to to make a claim involving Sergio Reguilon.

Barca are believed to be interested in the former Real Madrid defender as Tottenham eye Depay, and it is said that the most ‘likely’ solution could be a swap deal between the two parties.

Defender Clement Lenglet, another Conte target, is also a mentioned as a player who could be used in an exchange deal for Reguilon.

The Verdict: Big development…

Much has been made of Real Madrid’s €40m (£34m) buyback clause inserted into Spurs’ agreement to sign Reguilon in 2020, so this news that he could actually end up joining Barca comes as a slight shock.

Ryan Sessegnon’s consistent injury problems are a cause for concern, despite his good form when able to play, so Conte keeping his alternative left-back in the Spaniard may well be crucial.

Reguilon has been called ‘one of the best left-backs in the world’ by former Spurs goalkeeper Paul Robinson (Football Insider), and seeing the 25-year-old leave would leave them very depleted in that position.

That being said, signing a proven forward like Depay, who has reignited his career since leaving Old Trafford, could be a major opportunity for Tottenham.

His current deal expires in 2023, and amid Barcelona’s desperation to balance the books, they may be forced to accept a reasonable fee from Spurs without the need to offer out Reguilon.

The Catalan giants actually inserted a mammoth €400m (£336m) release clause in Depay’s deal when signing him as a free agent, as per reliable Spanish news outlet AS, but it now appears to have been a rather pointless exercise by Laporta and co.

West Ham: Moyes plotting Johnson swoop

West Ham United are interested in a deal to bring Brennan Johnson to the London Stadium in the summer transfer window.

What’s the talk?

That’s according to a claim made by ExWHUemployee, with the club insider recently revealing on The West Ham Way podcast that David Moyes has instructed his scouts to watch the Nottingham Forest attacking midfielder this season, ahead of a potential move for the 20-year-old at the end of the current campaign.

Speaking about the Hammers’ interest in the Wales international, Ex said: “Two Nottingham Forest players are still on the radar and have been scouted. One of them is Brennan Johnson. He’s a Welsh international. Very dangerous. He’s been leading the line for Forest this season.”

The next Bowen

With Johnson having been in breathtaking form for Nottingham Forest so far this season, there are very clear comparisons that can be drawn between the 20-year-old and one of West Ham’s former recruits from the Championship – Jarrod Bowen.

Indeed, over his 36 league outings for Steve Cooper’s side in the current campaign, the £900k-rated dynamo has been a livewire in the Forest frontline, scoring 11 goals, registering six assists and creating 11 big chances for his teammates, as well as taking an average of 1.8 shots and making 1.2 key passes per game.

These returns have seen the player who Glenn Murray dubbed a “special” talent who is “destined for the top” average an extremely impressive SofaScore match rating of 7.04, ranking him as the Reds’ joint seventh-best performer in the second tier of English football.

And, when comparing Johnson’s metrics to those of Bowen’s final Championship campaign with Hull City, it is clear the two players contribute a similar level of attacking output.

Indeed, over his 29 league fixtures for the Tigers back in 2019/20, the £58.5m-rated forward bagged 16 goals, provided seven assists and created ten big chances for his teammates, in addition to taking an average of 3.6 shots and making 1.5 key passes per game.

These returns saw the player who Grant McCann labelled “unplayable” average a SofaScore match rating of 7.10, ranking him by far and away as Hull’s best player in the Championship that season.

Furthermore, aside from their on the pitch similarities, with Johnson reported to be available for a figure of around £20m this summer – the same amount West Ham parted with in order to prise Bowen away from the MKM Stadium in January of 2020 – the Welshman could end up costing the east London outfit a similar fee to the 25-year-old.

As such, with the 20-year-old very much looking as if he is on a similar path to the Hammers’ current attacking sensation, it would appear highly advisable for Moyes to do all he can to land the Forest starlet this summer – as he too could turn into something of a world-beater at the London Stadium.

Celtic: Shved rinsed Desmond for 129 weeks

When Celtic spent £2m on the signing of Marian Shved back in January 2019, it would be fair to say that many at Parkhead were not overly convinced about the winger’s suitability for the club.

Indeed, shortly after the 21-year-old’s arrival in Glasgow, Brendan Rodgers appeared less than enthused about the capture of the Ukraine international, stating: “I can’t say I know a great deal about him but what I have seen he is a talent and something that will probably benefit the club in the future.

“We’ve got about a million wingers and don’t need another one but he’s a talent and in the summer we’ll probably lose wingers and he’ll look to come in. It’s an opportunity for the club to sign a young talented player but not one that will probably help us now.

“The club have been in contact with his representatives and he is a player for the future. I haven’t seen a great deal of him to be honest. It is something that has come to the club through circumstance and he has been watched. I think that they will look to get the deal done on him and he will probably be out on loan.”

As the Northern Irishman suggested, Shved did indeed depart Celtic Park on a temporary basis shortly after his arrival in Glasgow, returning to Karpaty Lviv for the remainder of the 2018/19 campaign.

However, what Rodgers did not predict was that the forward would also spend the vast majority of 2019/20 away from Parkhead, with the £810k-rated winger linking up with Belgian side KV Mechelen in August 2020 after making just three appearances for Celtic – once in Champions League qualifying, once in the Premiership and once in the Scottish Cup.

After Mechelen made the 24-year-old – who Wouter Vrancken dubbed a “loner” and suggested should “play billiards for the rest of his life” rather than football – a permanent signing for an unspecified amount last summer, the £7.9k-per-week Shved’s status as a Celtic flop was confirmed.

Indeed, with the attacker setting Celtic back around £1m in wages over his 129 weeks at Parkhead, in addition to his £2m transfer fee, it is clear that the Bhoys had a shocker when signing the Ukrainian, who well and truly rinsed Dermot Desmond.

Tottenham: Source makes Nunez claim

According to a report from Portuguese newspaper A Bola (via Sport Witness), Tottenham Hotspur are among the clubs interested in signing Benfica striker Darwin Nunez.

The lowdown: Huge interest

Already being indexed as one of the major movers in the upcoming summer transfer window by reputable journalist Fabrizio Romano, the 22-year-old is expected to attract an abundance of interest as a “big name” in the market.

Clubs from across the continent have been linked with the Benfica hotshot and a move away from the Primeira Liga seems inevitable at the end of the season.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/tottenham-latest-news-copy/” title=”Tottenham latest developments!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

Amidst links elsewhere to Inter Milan striker Lautaro Martinez, it certainly seems as if Fabio Paratici wants to sign a striker for Antonio Conte, and now Spurs are named amongst the leading contenders to bring the Uruguay international to the Premier League.

The latest: Lilywhites named

As per the Portuguese source, translated by SW, Tottenham, West Ham and Manchester United are all in the mix to land Nunez.

Serie A title-holders Inter Milan are also cited as being interested in the eight-cap Uruguay star, who recently fired Benfica into the UEFA Champions League quarter-finals with a goal against Ajax.

It’s claimed that the Eagles will hold out for bids in the region of €60million (£50million) for their prized asset – way short of a €150million (£126million) release clause.

The verdict: Star signing

Albeit an expensive transfer at the mooted figures, few strikers in Europe can boast the scintillating form shown by Nunez this season.

At present, the Uruguayan is firmly in the race for the European Golden Boot with 20 league goals this season.

Tipped to become ‘the best in the world’ by Jorge Jesus, Nunez has enjoyed a rapid rise to prominence and Paratici could truly add a superstar in the making to Conte’s squad with this capture.

Valued at £36million and under contract until 2025 (Transfermarkt), signing the dynamic frontman at almost any price to partner with Harry Kane would surely be regarded as a superb piece of business.
