Erik, poupado, será a grande ausência do Goiás diante do Brasília

Glasgow Rangers have every right to be worried about Leeds target Ryan Kent

Glasgow Rangers may have just crushed their arch-rivals Celtic in a comfortable 2-0 win at Parkhead, but a certain star could soon be giving Steven Gerrard sleepless nights if recent reports are to be believed..

What’s the word?

Former Tottenham and England striker Darren Bent claims Ryan Kent may turn down a new contract at Ibrox because he could earn “double his money” in the Premier League.

Reports in recent times had suggested that Rangers were ready to offer the 23-year-old a bumper new deal amid interest from Leeds United.

But Bent believes that a lucrative offer from elsewhere might prove too tempting for the highly-rated left winger to ignore.

He told Football Insider: “The money in the Premier League is a lot bigger than the money in the Scottish Premier League and that’s where the difficulty lies.

“He might get a contract at Rangers that might be a good contract but he knows that he can potentially double his money in the Premier League and it’s the most coveted league in the world.”

Every right to be concerned?

It’s claimed that the club are willing to give him wages worth £28,000-per-week, which would make him one of their highest earners in the process.

The trouble is that this isn’t exactly an awful lot of money for a professional footballer, let alone a player who possesses such obvious potential. For instance, Leeds midfielder Kalvin Phillips, who is only one year older than his countryman, currently earns a salary with wages worth £40,000-a-week.

Kent’s current contract is set to expire in 2023, so the Gers must convince him to sign an extension and increase. However, he made it clear that he wanted to stay with the 54-time Scottish champions in the summer, which should go some way towards allaying the fears of some supporters, for the time being at least.

Whether or not Rangers chief Ross Wilson will be able to get him to agree to a new long-term deal is another matter altogether. If Leeds once again come calling in the winter transfer window, who knows what will happen, as he may be unable to resist the lure of a wage rise and the chance to play in the Premier League.

The ever-reliable winger was recently described as being “on fire” by his teammate Scott Arfield, whilst he was once hailed as a “wonderful player” by Jurgen Klopp. This season, the £3.15m-rated Rangers ace has made 11 appearances in the Scottish Premiership, scoring four goals and supplying one assist so far, whilst averaging 3.2 shots, 2.3 key passes and 2.7 dribbles per game, via WhoScored.

Meanwhile, Ianis Hagi has only mustered one goal and five assists, whilst taking2.6 shots, 1.6 key passes, and averaging fewer than one dribble per game, via WhoScored.

One thing is for sure, the Gers must fight to keep Kent at all costs. Sorting out his £20m release clause would be a good start.

AND in other news, Rangers must watch out for Standard Liege’s Mehdi Carcela in Europa League…

Micah Richards thinks Jack Grealish would flourish at Liverpool

Micah Richards believes Jack Grealish would continue to improve his game if he was to join a top side in the Premier League. In a recent Daily Mail chat with Chris Sutton, the former right-back has highlighted Liverpool amongst those the Aston Villa captain should consider moving to.

“He is a top Premier League player. When he plays with better players, it lifts him. Imagine if he was at Man United, Chelsea, Liverpool, Man City or Arsenal,” Richards said whilst analysing Grealish’s recent England performance.

A lot of sides have been interested in snapping up the 25-year-old recently, with the Reds named by Coral amongst the favourites to secure his signature window (via Tribuna).

Why Liverpool should sign Grealish

Liverpool have plugged their leaks this window despite seemingly being hesitant with their funds. The long-awaited arrival of Thiago Alcantara will help improve their midfield struggles and Naby Keita’s recent turn in form will also give the reigning Premier League champions a boost in the engine room.

However, cult hero Gini Wijnaldum looks like he’ll be leaving the club next summer due to not yet signing a new deal. With less than 12 months left on his current contract, his time at Anfield could be coming to an end. This could open up the opportunity for a more attacking midfielder to come and slot into his place.

Grealish is a left-winger by trade but boasts extreme versatility. Last season he played across five different positions for Villa, including in the No.10 role and as second striker. He popped up with an impressive ten goals and eight assists across all competitions last campaign and is on track to beating those numbers already this term (via Transfermarkt).

A partner for Thiago

New addition Thiago may not have the best goal contribution stats, but his passing percentage will be crucial in Liverpool’s midfield. He has played just one game for his new club so far but his performance against Chelsea saw him maintain a 90% passing accuracy, which in turn created a key pass towards Liverpool’s attack (via Sofascore).

Paired up with a heavy threat like Grealish, the two could strike a great partnership. Protected by Fabinho in the defensive midfield role, Thiago could pull the strings with his creative passes whilst Grealish ventures further forward to help out the front three.

The beauty of Liverpool’s attacking trio could also make for a lot of free roaming to catch the opposition off-guard. Roberto Firmino enjoys dropping deep which will leave room for Sadio Mane to drift in front of goal, opening up Grealish’s more preferred left-wing position for him to dominate.

With Fenway Sports Group looking at a potential huge investment, Liverpool could be willing to splash some cash next summer and land the £60million-rated Aston Villa star.

Newcastle striker Andy Carroll showed his worth against West Ham

Andy Carroll struggled for Newcastle United last season, managing just four starts throughout the campaign, coming off the bench on a further 15 occasions.

The start of the new campaign has brought plenty of positivity, with Callum Wilson and Ryan Fraser joining from AFC Bournemouth, while Jamal Lewis and Jeff Hendrick came in from Norwich City and Burnley respectively.

Can you name every one of the Magpies’ top goalscorers from the past 15 seasons? It’s a tricky one…

While Carroll was already at St. James’ Park last term, it can be argued that now is the time for him to show the club his true worth, and he started that at London Stadium, his old stomping ground.

The big man was indomitable in the air throughout the match, winning a total of 12 aerial duels – seven more than any other player on the pitch recorded.

While that physical presence is most often used to get Newcastle up the pitch, offering the defence a clear out ball, it also proved to be useful in the Toon’s box as well.

This is because he ended up making five clearances – a number that was only exceeded by Federico Fernandez and Jamaal Lascelles, who recorded seven and six respectively.

The graph below also offers an indication of how he was able to use his aerial prowess across the pitch, winning duels in both boxes, near the centre circle, in the middle of the pitch and out wide.

Carroll is probably not going to be the sort of striker that is constantly scoring goals for Newcastle, but he is definitely a useful asset for the club to have at their disposal if he can stay fit.

With Wilson scoring on his debut, it is likely Steve Bruce will currently be feeling very excited about his new striker partnership after that performance.

Tottenham fans delighted with Hugo Lloris’ contribution against Manchester United

Tottenham might have been just nine minutes away from restarting their Premier League campaign with three crucial points against Manchester United – but if it wasn’t for a captain’s performance from Hugo Lloris, it could have been a whole lot worse for Jose Mourinho’s side.

By the time Steven Bergwijn had notched his third goal in Spurs colours, the French World Cup winner had already made the first of six saves, showing fine reflexes to deny Marcus Rashford from close-range before holding onto an awkward effort from Bruno Fernandes on the stroke of half-time.

Lloris, who has been less than inspiring for Tottenham since returning from a dislocated elbow in January, went one better midway through the second-half when he produced stunning one-handed save to prevent Anthony Martial from leveling.

It was a performance that warranted three points, but Lloris couldn’t do anything about Bruno Fernandes’ 81st-minute penalty – with the Portuguese midfielder sending the 33-year-old the wrong way from 12-yards.

And despite receiving a fair amount of stick throughout this season, Spurs fans were full of praise for their goalkeeper after one of his best performances of the campaign – and took to Twitter to express their delight at their skipper…

Total Duds: Jon Flanagan looked a shadow of his former self in his time at Glasgow Rangers

This article forms part of our Total Duds feature series, which is where Football Transfer Tavern takes a look at how a player has fared since being signed or sold, using statistical figures and statements from pundits to prove how bad a deal the club got.

Six years ago, the world seemed to be Jon Flanagan’s oyster. At the age of just 21, he had been a regular feature in a Liverpool team that came agonisingly close to winning the Premier League, with one Merseyside derby performance leading Reds captain Steven Gerrard to describe him as “our star man by a country mile” that day.

His stellar 2013/14 season saw him given a full England debut a few weeks later and he was even on standby for their World Cup squad that year. He was dubbed “the Scouse Cafu” by the Anfield faithful and the legendary Brazil right-back even paid him a visit (as per The Athletic).

However, a serious knee operation wrote him off for all of the following season and he never managed to reclaim a regular place at Liverpool, with loan spells at Bolton and Burnley also yielding little joy. His arrest for assault in December 2017 was another setback to his career, although Gerrard offered him a lifeline at Glasgow Rangers six months later after the defender was released by the Reds.

There was no fairytale revival for Flanagan at Ibrox, though. He made only 16 Premiership appearances in his first season in Scotland, with statistics from their Europa League run showing how his performance levels had dipped since his 2013/14 peak.

In the Light Blues’ 2018/19 European campaign, he posted match averages of 2.3 tackles, two clearances, 0.3 key passes and 0.5 successful dribbles, with a passing success rate of 76.8%. In his standout season at Liverpool, the corresponding match averages were 3.4 tackles, 3.3 clearances, 0.6 key passes and 0.7 successful dribbles, while he had an 83.7% passing accuracy rate. [via WhoScored]

Flanagan’s fortunes didn’t improve in his second season at Ibrox, managing a paltry nine appearances and none in the Europa League proper. Unable to dislodge full-backs Borna Barisic and James Tavernier, the club took the decision to release him along with five other players last month. Tellingly, a number of ‘Gers fans celebrated the news that the 27-year-old was being let go by the club.

The ex-Liverpool defender leaves Ibrox with no goals and only one assist in 39 appearances, while he admitted in a recent interview with The Athletic that he is “worried” about what comes next for him in his career now that he is a free agent. Having failed to revive his career under former team-mate Gerrard in Glasgow, one must wonder how many more shots at redemption Flanagan will get.

‘Gers fans, how big of a letdown did Flanagan prove to be at Ibrox? Comment below with your views!
