Tillakaratne Dilshan has been named as Sri Lanka captain in all formats until the end of the year. This means he will stay in charge for the three-Test home series against Australia and at least the first two Tests of the South Africa tour that kicks off in December. The appointment was ratified by the Sri Lankan sports minister Mahindananda Aluthgamage.Dilshan took over the reins from Kumar Sangakkara following Sri Lanka’s runners-up showing at the World Cup, but the team’s fortunes have dwindled since – they lost the Test and ODI series in England, and currently trail 1-2 with two matches to play in the home one-dayers against Australia. They have had more success in the Twenty20 format, with victories in the one-off against England and the two-match series against Australia.Dilshan, personally, has had a mixed time as batsman since taking charge. After Sri Lanka’s capitulation in the first Test against England at Cardiff, Dilshan was in the process of leading a fightback at Lord’s when he was struck on the right thumb. The injury was diagnosed as a fracture, and kept him out of the third Test and the solitary Twenty20, leaving Sangakkara to lead the side in his absence.Dilshan was in poor form on his return, failing to reach double figures in the five ODIs against England and the solitary outing against Scotland that followed. An unbeaten ton in the first Twenty20 against Australia, however, seemed to shake the rust off. Dilshan played a key role in the victory in the third ODI, hitting a half-century and bowling a tight spell in the middle overs as Sri Lanka kept the series alive.

England seal series in thrilling finale

England prevailed by 16 runs in a thrilling finale to Sri Lanka’s tour, the bowling attack operating as a unit to defend 268 as the visitors were dismissed for 252 in the penultimate over

The Bulletin by Liam Brickhill09-Jul-2011
Scorecard
Tim Bresnan picked up three wickets as England sealed a 3-2 series win with a 16-run victory at Old Trafford•Getty ImagesFour one-sided games preceded this match at Old Trafford, but with the series at stake, England and Sri Lanka traded blows in a see-sawing encounter that had no clear winner until the closing minutes of the match. England prevailed by 16 runs in a thrilling finale to Sri Lanka’s tour, the bowling attack operating as a unit to defend 268 as the visitors were dismissed for 252 in the penultimate over. Two fluent partnerships, first between Alastair Cook and Craig Kieswetter, then from Jonathan Trott and Eoin Morgan, bookended by clutches of wickets, had carried England’s innings. However, offspinner Suraj Randiv helped himself to 5 for 42 to spark a collapse of 6 for 40 as the hosts slipped after being well-positioned to score over 300.Sri Lanka, who showed their vulnerability against the new ball at The Oval, when they stumbled to 15 for 4, and Trent Bridge, when the damage was 20 for 4, once again struggled first up. They needed two fighting stands of their own: the first a counter-attacking 94 between Dinesh Chandimal and Kumar Sangakkara, and the second, a backs-to-the-wall 102 between Angelo Mathews and Jeevan Mendis to get close before Jade Dernbach’s two wickets in consecutive balls sealed the result.Tim Bresnan had done the early damage to Sri Lanka, catching the edge of debutant Dimuth Karunaratne’s bat before Tillakaratne Dilshan, who has managed just 17 runs in five innings since coming back from a fractured thumb, hooked him straight to Dernbach at fine leg. Sri Lanka were wobbling at 12 for 2 and soon lost Mahela Jayawardene, who had been given a reprieve when he was badly dropped by Dernbach but chipped straight to Alastair Cook at mid-off not long afterwards. With England surging, Chandimal, who hit a match-winning – and controversial – century at Lord’s, provided a stylish counterpunch, displaying all the temerity of youth in a series of crisply-hit strokes, stepping out to thrash mighty sixes off both Bresnan and Swann. With Sangakkara ticking along in unpretentious style at the other end, Sri Lanka’s chase was put back on track.Chandimal eventually tried one shot too many, however, and was beaten in the flight by Swann and stumped for a 64-ball 54. When Sangakkara chopped the impressive Bresnan onto his stumps to be out for 48, Sri Lanka were 131 for 5 in the 30th over and England appeared to have complete control.Mathews and Mendis slowly pulled their side out of the mire, and Sri Lanka needed 116 from 18 overs when the batting Powerplay was taken. The batsmen managed to take a boundary from all but one of the Powerplay overs, milking 37 with the field restrictions in place and as they found fluency, the pressure was back on England.Mathews took their stand past 100 with a firm clip to the wide long-on boundary but Pietersen then kept his nerve to hold a good catch running in from the midwicket boundary – and looking into the sun – to get rid of Mendis for a career-best 48. It was now Sri Lanka’s turn to panic; Nuwan Kulasekara and Randiv falling in consecutive deliveries as they stumbled to 246 for 8.Unbelievably, Lasith Malinga strode to the crease and charged down the track to mow the first ball he faced high over long-on for six and the match hung in the balance once more. Cook tossed the ball to Dernbach for the 49th over, with 17 needed, and a contest that could have gone to the wire came to an abrupt end as he deceived Mathews with a slower one that took the leading edge and looped to point. Next ball he fired a searing yorker at the base of Malinga’s stumps to spark frenzied celebrations.Smart stats

In eight home series since the start of 2008, England have won six. Three of them have been won by a margin of 3-2 and their worst loss was the 6-1 loss to Australia in 2009. This is England’s second bilateral-series win against Sri Lanka after the 5-0 home defeat in 2006.

Jonathan Trott’s 72 is his 12th half-century in 29 innings in ODIs. His average of 52.44 is comfortably the highest among all England batsmen with 1000-plus runs in ODIs.

The 118-run stand between Trott and Eoin Morgan is the second-highest partnership for the fourth wicket for England in ODIs against Sri Lanka. The highest is 154 between Graeme Hick and Neil Fairbrother in 1999.

From a score of 213 for 3, England lost six wickets for the addition of just 40 runs. The 40 runs added is fifth on the list of least runs added between wickets five and nine for England against Sri Lanka in ODIs.

The 102-run stand between Angelo Mathews and Jeevan Mendis is the highest sixth-wicket stand for Sri Lanka against England in ODIs surpassing the previous best of 93 between Russell Arnold and Kumar Sangakkara in 2003.

There had been a suspicion before the game that this could be a low-scoring encounter as this was the first international match at Old Trafford since the pitch was rotated 90 degrees. What was once the best strip in the country had now lost much of its pace and bounce, but Kieswetter and Cook showed that a hard new ball could still bring runs as the first Powerplay brought no less than 75 runs, 38 of them in boundaries.England looked to press home their advantage by taking the batting Powerplay in the 13th over after Sri Lanka had set the field back in defence, but it was the Sri Lankans who profited from the restrictions as Cook ran past a fizzing Randiv offspinner to be stumped for 31. Dhammika Prasad removed Kieswetter and Pietersen in quick succession as England lost 3 for 10 in 19 deliveries, but Trott and Morgan settled quickly and complemented each other well in their contrasting styles to keep England on course for a challenging total. They didn’t score many boundaries – England only hit five after the ninth over – but both rotated the strike with ease; Trott reaching a 63-ball fifty and Morgan following him to the landmark soon after, from 54 deliveries. A total of over 300 looked a given, but Dilshan got the vital breakthrough when Morgan was beaten by flight and spin to be stumped for 57.That opened up England’s middle order, and a succession of batsmen fell trying to force the pace before they had been given a chance to adjust to the variable pitch. Randiv bowled with exceptional control as the batsmen tried to get after him, removing Ian Bell and Trott – via a fortuitous inside edge that rolled back onto the stumps, and had his fourth and fifth wickets in the space of three deliveries as Samit Patel and Tim Bresnan both fell to failed slogs. There was a feeling that England had wasted an opportunity when a much more substantial total had loomed, but the good work of the bowlers powered them to a rousing win to extend their successful summer.

Voges helps Australia take series 6-1

Australia rounded off their international summer in style with a commanding 57-run victory at Perth

The Bulletin by Andrew McGlashan at the WACA06-Feb-2011
Scorecard and ball-by-ball detailsAdam Voges was the Man of the Match for his unbeaten 80•Getty ImagesAustralia rounded off their international summer in style with a commanding 57-run victory in Perth. It wasn’t a high-quality match, with the exception of the batting from Adam Voges and David Hussey, as a long season drew to a close with two patched-up sides on show. However, Australia’s depth came to the fore again as Voges hit a career-best 80 before England’s mentally-finished top order was blown away to end hopes of a face-saving win.Nothing will compensate for the crushing loss in the Ashes series, but Australia’s resurgent one-day form has suggested a fourth consecutive World Cup title isn’t out of reach, especially if key players return from injury. Even taking into account England’s own injury problems and declining form, the home side’s performances have boded well in the absence of Ricky Ponting, Mike Hussey and Nathan Hauritz – all key figures in the one-day side.During the Test matches, Australia’s reserves did not appear up to international standard, but the team has not retained its No.1 one-day ranking by luck. Their pace attack is rapid, if wayward at times – they matched England’s wide tally of 19 – while the lack of a matchwinning spinner isn’t so harshly felt. Meanwhile, the batting is packed with stroke-makers.Two were on show here after the top order wobbled to 4 for 102 before Hussey and Voges added 95 in 13 overs. This could be a one-off opportunity for Voges but if an injury replacement is needed for the World Cup, and Shaun Marsh doesn’t recover, he might have put his name ahead of Callum Ferguson, who edged James Anderson to slip for 15.Once Australia had posted a competitive total it was always unlikely that the visitors would be able to dig deep enough to make it a contest with the prospect of their flight home tomorrow evening. Mentally, a number of the players have long since been in those aircraft seats.Andrew Strauss has plenty of reasons to be feeling weary after arriving in Australia on October 29 and it was a tired shot that ended his series when he was very late against Shaun Tait. The bat had barely come down when the ball knocked back the off stump. Steve Davies, back opening after the reshuffle caused by Eoin Morgan’s injury, was unconvincing in his short stay until flapping at Doug Bollinger to complete an unhappy few weeks.Jonathan Trott and Kevin Pietersen briefly consolidated but there was never any great sense of permanency even from the in-form Trott. He was drawn into a flat-footed drive against Johnson which sent a thick edge to first slip, then Pietersen’s uncertain stay ended with a drive to backward point. Even taking into account the looseness of England’s batting this was the good Mitchell Johnson and he added a third when Ian Bell carved down to third man.At 5 for 64 the game was over. Matt Prior played some handsome drives before giving Jason Krejza his maiden one-day wicket to end another unfulfilled innings and Michael Yardy battled hard to reduce the margin of defeat with his highest ODI score. But it had ceased to matter in the wider context.England’s makeshift bowling attack had done a decent job through the first half of the innings as the quicks started well and Yardy picked up two, but in a familiar pattern the work of the front line bowlers was squandered. Hussey and Voges took advantage with some positive strokeplay as they dispatched the loose deliveries on offer. Hussey had been given a life on 4 when Luke Wright dropped a return chance that should have been held and reached his fifty from 44 balls, which included a pulled six off Yardy. With his boundary-clearing ability and a Powerplay to come he could have cut loose during the final 10 overs, but was squared up by Liam Plunkett and got a leading edge to backward point. Plunkett ended with 2 for 49, which was an impressive effort considering that he only arrived in the country three days ago following a 40-hour journey from the Caribbean.Voges, though, remained to reach fifty off 45 deliveries, regularly showing his strength square of the wicket and rapid running. Although the boundaries dried up he placed the ball well to ensure 34 came off the last three overs, but Australia were helped by England’s waywardness. That was symptomatic of a team not fully focussed and the batting effort was further evidence that minds were elsewhere. If they want to perform at the World Cup there isn’t much time to refocus, but Australia can leave for the subcontinent this week in good spirits.

Bangladesh get first-ever Asian Games gold

Bangladesh’s cricketers won their country its first-ever gold medal in the Asian Games by beating Afghanistan in a thrilling final in Guangzhou. In a see-saw match that attracted a crowd of 2000, 19-year-old Shabbir Rahman smashed two sixes in the penultimate over to decisively swing the match Bangladesh’s way and dash Afghan hopes of a gold.A day after upsetting fancied Pakistan in the semi-finals, Afghanistan looked set for a hammering when they slid to 66 for 6 in the 13th over on choosing to bat. Youngsters Asghar Stanikzai (38*) and Shabir Noori (25) then gave Afghanistan’s chances a boost with a stabilising stand that left Bangladesh needing 120 for victory.Bangladesh almost made a mess of what should have been a straightforward chase, losing five wickets, including that of their experienced captain Mohammad Ashraful, for 75. Afghanistan were scenting another famous win but were denied by the pair of allrounder Naeem Islam, who is looking to secure a permanent spot in the Bangladesh side, and Rahman, a legspinner who was part of the squad for this year’s Under-19 World Cup in New Zealand. With 19 needed off the final two overs, Bangladesh were the underdogs but they clubbed 17 runs of the 19th over from offspinner Karim Sadiq, who had excellent figures of 2-0-10-2 before that, to transform the game.”I had a good talk with Naeen before the 19th over and we went for it,” Shabbir said. “Luckily, it came good. There was no pressure on me, but I am sure my team-mates in the dressing room were tense.”Ashraful admitted he had given up hope towards the end. “I was feeling a bit low but then Shabbir came and did the job for us,” he said. “There was a bit of pressure because Afghanistan are a very good side and this was our first major final.”Cricket has been Bangladesh’s most productive sporting discipline at the Asian Games so far – besides the men’s gold, they have won silver in the women’s competition. They have only one other medal in the Asian Games so far, a bronze in kabaddi.

Strauss silences the doubters

It seems absurd that Andrew Strauss’s place in England’s one-day line-up was being debated on the day he struck 126 to set-up a 2-0 series lead against Pakistan, but during the lunch interval of the second one-day international a panel of experts on TV selected their World Cup squads and Strauss wasn’t in the 15.Neither, for that matter, was Jonathan Trott, who is England’s in-form batsman of the moment in all formats and added 146 with Strauss at Headingley. But it was the absence of the current captain that provoked debate as he notched up his fifth one-day international hundred and second in three matches. The panel’s reasoning behind Strauss’s omission is his lack of runs straight down the ground and how he will adapt on the slower pitches in India, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka.Yet since returning to the one-day side in early 2009 – at that time because there was no other choice following the messy end to Kevin Pietersen’s captaincy stint – Strauss has averaged 42.03 in 32 matches compared to a career mark of 35.06. He knows he will be the man leading England at the World Cup and the numbers back up that decision.”All I can do is do my talking with the bat and help England to win cricket matches,” he said. “Other people can talk as much as they like, it’s pretty irrelevant to me. I’ve worked very hard on trying to expand my game and it’s important I can lead by example. I’ve been in good form all summer and that helps because things tend to come a bit more naturally. I’m very happy with my game and even more happy that we are continuing to win.”However, his innings wasn’t without two moments of good fortune and Pakistan were convinced he’d been caught behind on 38 when Umar Gul nipped one back off the seam. Kamran Akmal held a fine catch but Billy Doctove turned down the appeal and a few words were exchanged between batsman and bowler. It led to Shahid Afridi calling for the introduction of the umpire review system for major one-day series.”Definitely it would be good in matches like this and in big series like this,” he said. “It is important that it’s in cricket now. I know in Twenty20 you don’t have much time but in one-dayers you would.”But on this occasion it wasn’t a clear-cut decision even on replays so the UDRS may not have even overturned the on-field call and Strauss was very content about standing his ground. “I wasn’t sure if it had hit my glove,” he said. “Nothing has changed in cricket, the umpires are there to make a decision and they did that.”Strauss was given a much more obvious life on 23 when Mohammad Irfan, the seven-foot pace bowler, couldn’t take a simple catch at short fine-leg. Irfan later limped off with cramp for the second match running and Afridi was far from impressed with his new recruit.”I’m really disappointed with this guy,” he said. “Cricket is not all about just batting and bowling, fielding is very important and maybe if he’s good in the field I will give him a chance otherwise I’m not happy.”However, Pakistan don’t have many other pace options in their squad. Wahab Riaz would be a controversial selection considering his links to the ongoing spot-betting allegations while Abdul Razzaq, who has been left out of the opening two matches, is due to undergo an MRI scan on his troublesome back in the next few days.

Coincidentally, the senior West Indies conceded the same amount of runs to the South Africans across the Atlantic Ocean at St Kitts.Resuming at 12 for 1, West Indies lost the wicket of Omar Phillips, bowled by Jaskaran Singh, with the score on 54. From then on, it was hard work for the Indians as Fletcher and Smith built a strong partnership. Fletcher hit 20 fours in his 123 before he was dismissed by Jaidev Unadkat. Smith remained unbeaten on 131 at stumps, hitting 15 fours in his knock. Kirk Edwards was with him at the crease, unbeaten on 19. With only a day remaining, a draw seems likely.
