West Ham have a huge Anderson issue

Felipe Anderson has proven to be a ‘true disappointment’ for FC Porto since sealing a season-long loan from West Ham United.

That’s the view of Portuguese newspaper Record, via Sport Witness, who claim that the Brazilian will soon be heading back to the London Stadium.

Anderson’s efforts under Sergio Conceicao have failed to convince the Dragoes leadership to launch a bid to retain the winger beyond his temporary terms.

West Ham are expected to work on cashing-in on Anderson in the off-season, with the 27-year-old entering the final 12-months of his £85,000-per-week contract in June.

Anderson has been an outcast at the Estadio do Dragao ever since his arrival, with Conceicao only fielding the two-cap international on nine occasions across all competitions and starting five of his appearances.

Record note that Anderson was in line for more minutes earlier in the season after a brief improvement to his performances, but the spotlight quickly faded and he was sent back to the wilderness.

Conceicao omitted the Hammers forward from his last four Liga NOS squads prior to the international break, while last fielding Anderson eight games ago.

[snack-amp-story url=”https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/the-latest-west-ham-news-gossip-and-views” title=”The latest West Ham news and views!”]

The former SS Lazio attacker is now set to cause David Moyes a huge problem in the summer transfer market when West Ham look to sell their £36m former club-record signing.

Anderson’s inability to establish himself at Porto has seen his market value plummet, to now boast a TransferMarkt valuation of only £13.5m – a whopping £27m down on where it stood just 15-months ago.

Anderson bragged a career-high valuation of £40.5m in December 2019 after a strong debut season in England, having struck 10 goals and penned five assists in all competitions under Manuel Pellegrini.

The following campaign started promisingly with three assists in his first six Premier League appearances, but things took a downward turn before Moyes’ arrival and failed to pick up with one goal following in a mere eight games as injuries limited Anderson’s action.

By the end of the 2019/20 term, Anderson’s market value had fallen by almost 50% in seven months to sit at £22.5m and it has continued to drop in line with his Porto plight with TransferMarkt’s latest valuation coming in at £13.5m.

West Ham will face a great challenge to recoup as much of the £36m paid to Lazio when they look to sell Anderson in the summer and may rue opting to allow the winger to stay at Porto despite interest from Fiorentina in January.

Reports have already surfaced suggesting that the Irons will set a £17m asking price for the off-season, although it remains to be seen how close to that figure any potential suitor is willing to go.

What is sure is that Anderson’s career has been spiralling in the wrong direction for too long, and his market value is only an indication of how poorly his nightmare has gone.

Armstrong was superb in Southampton win

Southampton earned their first win in 10 league matches with a 2-0 win against relegation-threatened Sheffield United on Saturday afternoon, with Ralph Hasenhuttl’s side well worthy of the three points at Bramall Lane.

A penalty from James Ward-Prowse gave the Saints the lead before Che Adams came back to haunt his old club by scoring a screamer to seal the points in the second half.

Truthfully, it could have been more comfortable for Hasenhuttl’s side, with Takumi Minamino and Nathan Tella guilty of big misses, but the Austrian will surely be relieved that his side were finally able to bring an end to their woeful recent form.

Whilst Tella is rightfully earning a lot of plaudits for his display, as he won the penalty in the first half and caused the Sheffield United defence all sorts of problems with his pace, it was arguably Stuart Armstrong who was the star performer against Chris Wilder’s side.

As per SofaScore, the Scottish international earned an impressive 7.4 match rating for his display, which was the best of any Southampton player, and the joint-best of any player from either side on the pitch. Tella, meanwhile, earned a 7.0 match rating.

During the 90 minutes, Armstrong played four key passes, which was the most of any player on the pitch (SofaScore), and he also picked up an assist for Adams’ goal as his chested lay-off was perfect for the former Birmingham striker to rifle home an incredible volley.

The former Celtic man was more than willing to run at the Sheffield United defence, as he completed two of his five dribbles during the game, more than the 1.5 dribbles per game he has averaged in the top-flight so far this season.

He was not just impressive from a creative point of view, however, as he also worked superbly with Kyle Walker-Peters down the right-hand side from a defensive point of view.

During his time on the pitch, the 26-year-old completed five tackles and made three interceptions, which is far more than the two tackles and 0.9 interceptions he has averaged in the Premier League this season.

Therefore, whilst Tella might be the name on a lot of Southampton fans’ lips after his promising display, it was arguably Armstrong who was the star at Bramall Lane, and Hasenhuttl will surely be delighted with the work he put in from both an attacking and a defensive perspective.

Man Utd fans slam Fred vs Crystal Palace

Many Manchester United fans were left to slam the display of Fred in their 0-0 away draw at Crystal Palace in the Premier League on Wednesday night.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s men really struggled to break the South London club down at all and in the end had to settle for a point, which meant that they lost further ground on their local rivals Manchester City in the title race and will now surely be looking more over their shoulders than in front of them.

Fred’s performance in particular flattered to deceive several members of the Old Trafford faithful, as the central midfield player lost out on no fewer than eight of his duels in the game, while also failing to record a single clearance and losing possession of the ball eight times, earning him a quite measly 6.6 overall rating on Sofascore, the second-lowest out of any of his teammates to have started the match.

Manchester United fan reaction to Fred display

These Red Devils slammed his performance on Twitter, with one MUFC supporter saying that the Brazil international was ‘poor’ while another claimed he is ‘one of the worst players’ in the team:

“Fred is one of the worst players in the @ManUtd team. He cannot pass or shoot. To think we had midfielders like Scholes, Carrick and Keane and now we rely on Fred and Matic. I would rather we lose a game 1-0 but have ten shots on goal. This park the bus tactic is sickening #MUFC”

“You could see Rashford especially get frustrated playing in front of Fred and Matic because they offered absolutely nothing to the forward players. Zero service all night. Way too safe. Which is their job. It’s the attributes they have. They just shouldn’t be #mufc starting CMs.”

“Fred was awful and not for the first time but why wait 75 minutes when it was clear from the first half? We do the same things and expect different results. Einstein’s definition of insanity is proving true #mufc”

“One of the worst collective performances I can remember in the Bruno era. Marcus, Fred & Bruno particularly off it. Henderson and Bailly probably the only players who were up to the standards tonight #MUFC #CRYMUN”

“United are dropping more points then leaking tap l have say there was no creative in United team apart from Bruno. Needs some help. Fred was poor again but no one mentions it he’s not good enough #mufc”

West Ham face £20m Lingard transfer fee

David Moyes must urge David Sullivan to meet Manchester United’s valuation of Jesse Lingard after reports by Eurosport last week claimed that West Ham will have to pay £20m to retain the midfielder beyond his half-season loan.

Lingard moved to the London Stadium for the remainder of the 2020/21 campaign during the recent winter transfer window and he has proven an instant hit in claret and blue with three goals and two assists in five games.

Man United are said to have always been confident of Lingard being a success in the capital, so they refused West Ham’s request for a permanent clause to be included in his temporary switch.

The Irons are thought to have offered a £15m buyout option on top of the £1.5m loan fee paid to the Red Devils, but they will now be facing a fee upwards of £20m to strike a deal at the end of the season.

Lingard had barely featured for Man United before packing his belongings and leaving Old Trafford earlier this year, with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer only awarding the 28-year-old 179 minutes of first-team action across all competitions.

Not a single second of that came in the Premier League with the former England international resigned to a bit-part role in the EFL and FA Cups, but has been trusted to start all five available top-flight fixtures under Moyes while playing 442 of a possible 450 minutes.

Only once has Lingard failed to influence the scoring with the Hammers, too, having struck a brace on debut at Aston Villa and netting once against Tottenham Hotspur, while assisting goals against Sheffield United and Manchester City.

No Irons player has been involved in as many goals since Lingard was given his West Ham bow at Villa Park last month, with Michail Antonio second with two goals and two assists.

Lingard’s efforts in claret and blue saw Arsenal icon Paul Merson wax lyrical during Sky Sports’ Soccer Saturday, showering the Man United loanee with praise while addressing West Ham’s hopes of claiming a Champions League qualifying berth.

“I think he is outstanding. You get good reports from his attitude and how good he’s been. I think he’s the difference. If they’re going to get in the top four, he’s their X-factor,” Merson said on the show (27/2, 12:16).

As well as being the Hammers’ ‘X-factor’ and most influential figure during the club’s last five Premier League games, Lingard’s form has returned the best average WhoScored match rating of any West Ham player in the top-flight this term at 7.5 out of 10.

The 24-cap Three Lions international also offers the highest number of average shots per game (3.2), plus the second-most successful dribbles (1.6) to Arthur Masuaku (2.2) and the fourth-most key passes (1).

Moyes would be rather naïve to not urge Sullivan to now pay the extra £5m needed to retain Lingard should he maintain his early form, as West Ham have not seen anywhere near the same output from the likes of Pablo Fornals or Manuel Lanzini.

Fornals has offered 0.7 key passes, 1.2 shots and 0.9 successful dribbles per game in the league this season, while Lanzini has created 0.7 goal-scoring opportunities, taken 0.8 attempts and brought possession up the field with 0.3 successful runs each match.

Leeds offered Montpellier’s Andy Delort

According to Football Insider, Leeds United have been offered the chance to sign Montpellier striker Andy Delort in this January transfer window.

What’s the story?

The Whites have had to rely on Patrick Bamford week-in and week-out for this entire Premier League campaign thus far, and to the 29-year-old’s credit, he’s done remarkably well on the whole – he’s already bagged ten goals in 18 games in the division.

But now, Football Insider claim that with French football feeling the pinch of the financial situation facing most clubs around the world, Montpellier are keen to raise some quick money by cashing in on Delort this month.

The report adds that Marcelo Bielsa’s side are one of a number of clubs to be offered the 6 foot Algeria international’s services, and that Leeds are on the look-out for a striker who can benefit from the amount of crosses they put into the box.

Shades of Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink

With Bamford Leeds’ sole saviour up front this season in the Premier League, Bielsa will no doubt be desperate to add to his striking ranks, and a move for the rapid Delort could go a long way to solving way.

How quick is Delort? Well, it was revealed that last season in Ligue 1, he was ranked as the fastest player in the division, even ahead of PSG flier Kylian Mbappe.

And, an analysis piece by French Football Weekly hailed Delort’s all-round game, saying: “What Delort lacks in height, he more than makes up for in terms of his use of physique when holding off defenders with his shoulders and he uses his excellent ball control to quickly move the ball out of his feet to release venomous shots from range.

“His strength also allows him to play with this back to goal and his placement of shots is extremely accurate. On his day, Delort is a technically-gifted player who makes the best use of his great first touch.”

A lot of Delort’s game resembles that of former Leeds striker Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink, with the Dutchman of course possessing one of the fiercest strikes in the Premier League during his time and having great feet – that’s not to mention how much of a proven goal-scorer he was in the top-flight too, netting an impressive 129 times in the competition.

Delort has been in fine form this campaign for Montpellier, out-scoring PSG superstar Neymar with nine goals in 18 games. His previous experience in English football – 11 games with Wigan in the Championship back in the 2014/2015 season – saw him score none whatsoever.

But with a few years gone, Delort may be ready for a return to these shores.

Meanwhile, Leeds must try and sell this Radrizzani disaster…

Erratic Glasgow Rangers ace Ryan Kent was the only real disappointment in the 8-0 win over Hamilton

Steven Gerrard can’t have much to complain about after Glasgow Rangers thrashed Hamilton Academical in a thrilling 8-0 win at Ibrox to stay nine points clear of Celtic at the top of the Scottish Premiership on Sunday afternoon.

The Light Blues are currently unbeaten in 20 games, stretching all the way back to the 1-0 victory over Aberdeen at the start of the season, and Rangers will look to resume their remarkable run when they face the Dons after the international break.

Scott Arfield combined with Ryan Kent to open the floodgates, as goals from Kemar Roofe and Joe Aribo put the Gers three goals up inside 19 minutes to put the game beyond Hamilton, before Aribo and Roofe doubled their efforts, and Brandon Barker and a brace from club captain James Tavernier capped off Gerrard’s biggest win since he first took charge of the club.

Whilst Aribo, Arfield and Roofe ran riot over the Accies, there was one player who’s poor performance went relatively unnoticed – Ryan Kent.

Before we get started, let’s just make one thing clear – Kent is still one of the club’s best players by a country mile. But that doesn’t mean that he can be totally exempt from criticism, if anything, far from it, as he still has some areas he urgently needs to address, namely working on his aerial duels, which are a glaring weakness.

Per SofaScore, the 23-year-old received a respectable rating of 7.3, but this was the lowest score out of the entire front three – he lost possession more times than Jermain Defoe and Roofe (15), whilst he only won five out of ten duels overall, hit the woodwork once and missed one big chance.

It’s fair to say that this was a rather disappointing display from a player of his standards, as he once again failed to find the back of the net, although he at least assisted Arfield’s opener. In fact, he has failed to score since the 4-0 win over Willem II in the third round of the Europa League qualifying stage this season.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, former Leeds and Aberdeen striker Noel Whelan insisted that the erratic Rangers ace “needs to improve” his finishing and goal contributions in general.

Kent has only scored four goals and supplied two assists in 19 games in all competitions so far this season, whilst he is averaging 2.9 shots per game, via WhoScored. He just needs to be more clinical in front of the goal, that’s for sure. Maybe the international break will give him a chance to rest his weary legs.

Aston Villa shouldn’t fear Man City’s Jack Grealish transfer interest

According to The Independent, Manchester City have earmarked a move for Aston Villa talisman Jack Grealish.

What’s the story?

The England star was the subject of major speculation over the course of the summer transfer window just gone by, but he appeared to end all that by signing a new five-year deal back in September, declaring that it is “home” and that he’s “very happy here”.

That hasn’t stopped some of the Premier League’s big boys from casting admiring glances however, and The Independent now claim that it’s City who have moved ahead of neighbours Manchester United in the race to sign him.

It’s claimed that Pep Guardiola has urged the City board to make a move for the play-maker, and that he’s received a glowing reference from Kevin De Bruyne about Grealish’s talents. The report adds that whilst there’s a clause in his contract that won’t allow him to leave Villa Park for less than £100m, “many close to the player however feel it is only a matter of time until he makes the step up to one of the big six”.

Villa shouldn’t be worried

A couple of months ago, a lot of Villa fans would surely have been concerned about Grealish potentially leaving. After all, the club were edging closer and closer towards relegation back to the Championship, and reports had already indicated United were prepared to make a big-money move.

But after surviving the drop on the final day, Dean Smith’s side made some wholesale improvements to their first-team squad over the summer, and have enjoyed an incredible start to the new Premier League season.

In fact, they remain just five points off the top of the table with a game in hand, and whilst it’s very early to suggest they might end up with European football at the finish of the season, they’ve given themselves the best possible chance to do just that.

And as Grealish himself said, Villa is his home. Playing in Europe with his boyhood club is surely one of his biggest dreams, and rather than it being a wild fantasy like it may have been earlier this year, it’s a very realistic possibility right now. It would mean an awful lot more to him to do something amazing with his team, then go be just another cog in a machine elsewhere.

Described as a “special player” by former Villa man Paul Merson, if Johan Lange can work his magic over the course of the next year or so to keep Grealish at the club, then it would go down as his ultimate masterpiece since arriving.
