Sussex allrounder Chris Nash has signed an extension to his current contract, which will keep him at Hove until the end of the 2013 season.Nash, 27, made his county debut in 2002 and has scored 4,734 first-class runs at 38.48 since then as well as being a useful bowling option in limited-overs cricket. Sussex were promoted to First Division after winning the Second Division last season and Nash is relishing the prospect of competing in the top-flight again.”I am delighted to have extended my contract,” he said. “Next season is going to be a very exciting one back in Division One. We are working very hard to make sure we can challenge for all three trophies.”Nash made a career-best 184 against Leicestershire in July and finished the 2010 season with over 1000 Championship runs at 41.16. “On a personal level, I would like to replicate my 2010 Championship form, whilst also building on my one-day and Twenty20 form from the past two seasons.”Sussex captain Michael Yardy echoed the sentiment and called on him to keep improving over the next few years. “I’m really pleased that Chris has re-signed,” said Yardy. “He is a fantastic team man and is maturing into an outstanding player. Hopefully he’ll be pushing for higher honours within the game in the next couple of years.”

Wolves must unleash Neto vs Arsenal

Wolves have another chance to climb up the Premier League table this evening with an away clash against Arsenal next up for Bruno Lage’s side.

Having revealed in his pre-match press conference that there are currently no injury concerns in his squad, Lage could have a headache over his team selection this evening.

On the chalkboard

With that in mind, one decision that we feel the 45-year-old should make this evening in terms of who could be in his starting XI to take on the Gunners is to give winger Pedro Neto his first Premier League start of the season.

Having made his return to action as a late substitute in the Old Gold’s recent 2-1 win over Leicester City at the weekend after spending a significant amount of time on the sidelines with a serious knee injury, now could be a great opportunity for the attacker to really get back into the swing of things by leading the line in tonight’s match from the start.

Since joining the Midlands club back in the 2019 summer transfer window from Italian club Lazio, the 21-year-old, who is currently picking up a weekly wage of £39k-per-week according to Salary Sport, has racked up a total of 80 appearances across all competitions in which he has managed to score ten goals and provide 11 assists along the way.

Labelled as a “superstar” by Jamie Carragher in the past, the Portuguese international still managed to score five goals, provide six assists and end up being listed as Wolves’ joint-highest rated player based on his performances by WhoScored alongside Adama Traore with an overall rating of 7.11/10, despite missing their final seven league games of the campaign last season with his injury.

This not only shows how much of an attacking and creative threat Neto can be for the Old Gold but also how much of a boost it would be to have him back in the team on a regular basis, especially if he can hit the ground running by the way of scoring goals and providing assists.

Taking this into account, the winger certainly has the attacking capabilities in him to be a real threat for his side this evening, terrifying Arsenal’s defensive players, who, as a whole, have conceded eight more goals than Lage’s side this season.

With fellow Wolves winger Daniel Podence securing his first league goal of the season in the win over the Foxes, it would be interesting to see how the pair would play together in an attacking sense should Lage decide to unleash the duo tonight.

Wolves: Ruben Vinagre to exit permanently

Ruben Vinagre’s loan move from Wolves to Sporting Lisbon is to become permanent, according to a fresh report.

The Lowdown: Vinagre out on loan

The 22-year-old joined the Portuguese champions on a temporary basis last summer, with Bruno Lage seemingly not considering the left-back part of his plans.

Vinagre has only featured sparingly for Sporting this season to date (albeit partly due to injury), only making six Primeira Liga starts and also appearing twice in the Champions League.

However, it now looks as though the youngster has played his final game for Wolves, in light of a significant development from his native Portugal.

The Latest: Sporting move to be made permanent

Speaking to A Bola [via Sport Witness], Sporting manager Ruben Amorim confirmed that Vinagre’s move had become permanent.

The 37-year-old said of the defender: “He’s part of our project. We have young players we want to bet on. We really believe in Ruben. The situation was already thought of at the beginning of the season, but the purchase is now official. He had an injury that limited him.”

Sporting will reportedly pay €10m (£8.33m) for Vinagre’s services, with some reports also suggesting that Wolves could possibly receive 50% of a future sell-on fee, potentially pushing the Old Gold’s total income from the deal into eight figures.

The Verdict: Good move for Vinagre

The move makes perfect sense for Vinagre, allowing him to flourish at a club where he is clearly valued and kick on further in his career by settling permanently in Lisbon.

The left-back did his best for Wolves, scoring three times in 70 appearances, but the emergence of Rayan Ait-Nouri had pushed him down the pecking order at Molineux.

Assuming it goes through, it is a good piece of business by Wanderers, with Lage now hopefully able to use the funds from the sale towards new signings in the summer transfer window.

Celtic must unleash Ralston in Old Firm

Celtic have the chance to go six points clear at the top of the Premiership on Sunday if they can secure a win in the latest Glasgow derby.

Prior to the recent international break, the Hoops recorded a convincing 4-0 win over Ross County at Parkhead, setting them up nicely to take on their fiercest rivals at Ibrox this weekend.

On the chalkboard

In terms of how Ange Postecoglou could set up his team tomorrow, one player who didn’t start against County but we feel should be in the starting XI on this occasion is full-back Anthony Ralston.

Despite seeing Josip Juranovic start ahead of him last time out, the 23-year-old replaced him with 62 minutes on the clock and managed to put on a solid show.

With 28 minutes under his belt, the Scotland international made one tackle, won 100% of his aerial duels and completed 40 of the 43 passes he attempted, two of which were key passes. This cameo ultimately earned him an overall match rating of 7/10 from SofaScore, which is higher than what Juranovic got.

Looking at his season as a whole, Ralston has shown what an impressive all-around figure he is by racking up four goals and seven assists, along with averaging 1.6 tackles and 1.6 clearances per game in the league.

Praised for his “magnificent” performances in the past and hailed as a “warrior” on the pitch by Postecoglou, Ralston certainly has what it takes to be a real nuisance for his opponents from an attacking and defensive sense.

Taking into account the magnitude of tomorrow’s showdown and what it could mean for the title race on both sides, having a player like the £1.62m-rated defender on the pitch could be vital for Celtic given how deadly he can be in front of goal and how tough he can be at the back.

Moving forward, even though Rangers have scored fewer goals and conceded more than the Hoops this season, their current position in the table means that they will only be looking to win on Sunday. Therefore, if they go all-out attacking from the get-go, having a player like Ralston who can defend and also punish teams at the other end could make him the difference between winning and losing for Celtic. He is a man they will likely need this weekend.

Everton’s 3 worst players v Aston Villa

Duncan Ferguson slumped to a 1-0 defeat in his first game in charge at Everton at the hands of Aston Villa in the Premier League on Saturday.

An Emi Buendia header from former Toffees left-back Lucas Digne’s corner was enough to give Steven Gerrard’s team all three points at Goodison Park, in what was another disappointing result for the hosts.

Using statistical experts SofaScore, The Transfer Tavern have analysed who the three worst performers (to have played at least 45 minutes) were for Everton on the day:

Dominic Calvert-Lewin (6.4)

Admittedly tied with Jonjoe Kenny in terms of rating (6.4), Calvert-Lewin ranks in third here as he also picked up a yellow card.

The striker registered no shots on target and only had 36 touches of the ball in total, fewer than Everton goalkeeper Jordan Pickford. He also lost out on no fewer than 17 of his duels, by far the most out of any player on the pitch, and lost the ball 15 times.

Andre Gomes (6.3)

Gomes has the same rating as the worst player (6.3), but ranks second in our classification as he did not play the full game.

The Portuguese midfielder lost eight duels and failed to have a strike on goal, while he also made no clearances or interceptions. He also recorded no key passes and gave the ball away on six occasions before being substituted early in the second half.

Mason Holgate (6.3)

Also with a 6.3 rating, Holgate ranked as the worst player for the Blues, as he was left on the pitch for the full 90 minutes.

The defender was beaten in seven individual duels and made no clearances, while he too was guilty of losing possession far too cheaply, giving the ball away 18 times in total.

Everton in pole position to sign Vecino

Everton will be going into the upcoming transfer window with the opportunity to patch over the injury crisis they have been suffering throughout the first half of the season, with Rafa Benitez expected to make additions that will help the Toffees climb up the Premier League table and find better consistency in the league.

What’s the word?

According to reports from Italian news outlet, Calciomercato, Everton are in pole position to sign Inter Milan midfielder, Matias Vecino, in the January transfer window.

With the Uruguay international’s contract ending in June 2022, the Toffees could get the player in a cut price deal if Inter should feel that they are interested in cashing in on him mid-season.

For Inter, Vecino has made 119 appearances, scoring thirteen goals and bagging seven assists from his central midfielder role in the side since he joined from Fiorentina in 2017.

The 30 year old was previously praised by former Inter assistant boss Cristian Stellini, who simply said; “Matias Vecino always delivers.”

Everton have some competition in securing the Serie A star’s signature as both Leicester and Betis Sevilla are also both named as clubs interested in the report from Calciomercato.

Solving problems at Everton

The signing of Vecino could be the perfect opportunity for Benitez to inject some experience and reliability into the midfield, with the latter in particular being a huge priority for the Everton side that has been struggling with finding consistency with their first team due to a large number of injuries.

One area that has been decimated in recent weeks and months has been in that midfield position, with the likes of Abdoulaye Doucoure, Allan, Tom Davies and Andre Gomes all facing spells out among others.

Despite suffering with a horrific knee injury that side-lined the £4.5M-rated Vecino for eight months and missing 37 games for Inter, since coming back in January 2021, the player has found his form and this season has made 15 appearances for Inter, scoring one goal so far.

The Merseyside club have struggled to establish a run of form in the Premier League this season, with only five wins and a shocking eight defeats from their first 17 games only picking up 19 points out of a possible 51 so far, that has, as a result, now left them in a vulnerable position in 15th.

Benitez can capitalise on the troubling availability of players in his current squad by adding some quality players to his injury ridden team when the transfer window opens in a few days.
