The ECB are continuing their efforts to persuade Mervyn Westfield to give evidence at Danish Kaneira’s appeal hearing into his life ban for the game for corruption.Officials from the ECB met Westfield and his legal representatives in London on Thursday afternoon with discussions continuing into the evening. A further round of meetings has been scheduled for Friday with no agreement having been reached.Westfield, whose evidence was crucial in the original hearing that found Kaneria guilty of corruption, has had no contact with the ECB for many months and has so far resisted all attempts to persuade him to appear at the appeal. While the ECB were successful in gaining a summons from the High Court compelling Westfield to attend the appeal hearing on April 22, doubts remain as to whether the court has any jurisdiction in this case.Westfield remains angry with the ECB and the PCA. He feels that the harshness of his penalty – he spent two months in prison and was banned from the first-class game for five years and the recreational game for three – does not reflect that he cooperated with the investigating authorities, pleaded guilty and gave evidence against Kaneria. The fact that he has agreed to meet the ECB suggests a deal could be imminent, however. Westfield is understood to desire a return to club cricket – he remains connected with Wanstead Cricket Club in the Essex League – and he could be offered a chance to partially revive his career if he cooperates. Westfield would be expected to earn several hundred pounds a week as a club professional.Kaneria, the Pakistan legspinner, was banned from the game for life and charged £100,000 in costs by an ECB panel in June 2012 for his part in the spot-fixing case involving Westfield.Kaneria had been found guilty of inducing his former Essex team-mate to underperform in a limited-overs game in 2009 and of bringing the game into disrepute. Westfield, who was jailed for his role in the case, gave evidence against Kaneria at the hearing. As all boards under the governance of the ICC have an agreement to mirror bans imposed in such circumstances, Kaneria’s ban has been effective worldwide.Kaneria’s appeal hearing was originally scheduled for December but, after the ECB was unable to gain Westfield’s cooperation, it was postponed until April. Without Westfield’s evidence, the ECB’s case against Kaneria is severely compromised. Kaneria’s lawyers are looking not just for his ban to be overturned – at 32, he harbours hopes of a reviving his international career – but they are also claiming “very substantial damages” from the ECB.Kaneria returned to the UK on Wednesday. His lawyers remain adamant that, without Westfield’s evidence, the ECB “has no case”.This is an updated version of the story first published on April 17

Mayank Yadav ruled out of IPL 2025 after another back injury

O’Rourke replaces him at LSG while Jamieson replaces the injured Ferguson at PBKS

ESPNcricinfo staff15-May-2025Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) fast bowler Mayank Yadav has sustained another back injury and is out of the last leg of IPL 2025. LSG have roped in New Zealand quick Will O’Rourke at INR 3 crore in his place.Mayank was one of the three players LSG retained ahead of the mega auction. Returning to competitive cricket for the first time since October 2024, Mayank played only two matches in IPL 2025 – against Mumbai Indians (MI) and Punjab Kings (PBKS) – before the tournament was suspended following cross-border tension between India and Pakistan. His high pace – a quality that impressed the national selectors – and accuracy earned him a special fast bowler’s contract with the BCCI last year.Soon he picked up a back injury that made him miss the 2024-25 domestic season after his international debut. He was recovering at BCCI’s Centre of Excellence (formerly the National Cricket Academy) in Bengaluru. But his return was pushed back after he stubbed his toe against his bed leading to an infection. Upon his return, he was a much slower bowler, clocking speeds in the high-130 kph and only occasionally breaching the 140kph mark.Related

After Mayank’s first match upon his return, LSG mentor Zaheer Khan had said they were in “constant dialogue with the NCA” and were following the regimen that was given to him.The IPL stint with LSG will be O’Rourke’s first experience in the T20 franchise circuit. He has five wickets in five T20Is for New Zealand after his debut against Pakistan last year. Overall, he is capped ten times in Tests and 17 times in ODIs apart from his five T20I appearances.

Jamieson replaces Ferguson at PBKS

New Zealand fast bowler Kyle Jamieson replaced countryman Lockie Ferguson at PBKS for the rest of IPL 2025. Ferguson played four matches for PBKS this season and picked up five wickets. He hobbled off after bowling two balls in the game against Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) in April following which, PBKS fast-bowling coach James Hopes said Ferguson was “out indefinitely”.PBKS will be Jamieson’s second IPL team after he played for Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) in 2021. He was part of Quetta Gladiators in PSL 2025 but played in just two of their nine games. Jamieson joined PBKS for INR 2 crore. As reported by ESPNcricinfo, Gujarat Titans (GT) have signed Kusal Mendis as a replacement for Jos Buttler, who will leave for England duties at the end of the league stage. Mendis has joined GT for INR 75 lakh and will be eligible to play the playoffs.

Pakistan ride on Taufeeq double-century

Twelve hours of monkish accumulation in the Abu Dhabi heat earned Taufeeq Umar only the seventh double-century by a Pakistan opener and gave his team a lead of 314

The Report by Abhishek Purohit20-Oct-2011
Scorecard and ball-by-ball detailsTaufeeq Umar’s mammoth knock was his best in Tests•Associated Press

Twelve hours of monkish accumulation in the Abu Dhabi heat earned Taufeeq Umar only the seventh double-century by a Pakistan opener, and the first since 1992. It also left a tired Sri Lanka waiting for a declaration as Pakistan’s batsmen, barring Misbah-ul-Haq, favoured accumulation over urgency. Misbah finally relented about an hour before close of play, after the lead was 314, leaving the Sri Lanka openers a testing period to survive.Sri Lanka’s day got worse when umpire Tony Hill, who is having a rough game, harshly adjudged Tharanga Paranavitana leg-before first ball. Several close shaves against the new ball followed, which was the last thing Sri Lanka needed after Taufeeq had ground them out of the match.Taufeeq went through three contrasting partnerships on the third day: he collected runs without risk with Younis Khan, stepped back as Misbah attacked the bowlers and finally took charge when Asad Shafiq – coming in at 436 for 4 – remained stuck on 1 for 30 deliveries. As is often the case in sagas of self-denial, there wasn’t a particular Taufeeq stroke that stood out. What did was the way he got his runs – dabbing and steering when he could have indulged in a cut, stepping out to clip and drive when he could have lofted, nudging when he could have flicked. He patted away numerous half-volleys and scored less than a third of his runs in boundaries. He ran 90 singles, 21 twos and 10 threes in the sapping heat. There were also outside edges that did not carry, inside edges that missed the stumps and a let-off soon after Taufeeq had reached his century yesterday, but in an innings that spanned close to 500 deliveries, it was almost par for the course. Taufeeq continued to pull with zest throughout, showing that nine successive sessions on the field had not diminished his effort. With Taufeeq’s patience at one end, Misbah brought the urgency the innings had begun to scream for before umpire Tony Hill ruled him caught behind, his third big error of the game. After Chanaka Welegedara had accounted for Azhar Ali in the seventh over of the morning, Taufeeq and Younis ensured Sri Lanka’s relief was temporary with a stand that had a sense of inevitability in the resolute manner it was built. Welegedara tested Pakistan in the morning, getting nip off the surface and swing in the air. A ripping inswinger uprooted Azhar’s off stump. It was the tenth time Azhar had failed to convert a half-century into a Test hundred.Apart from that, and a couple of edges and mis-hits that didn’t carry to the fielders, Pakistan carried on unbothered, though they did not really dominate. Taufeeq and Younis hardly took any risks. Younis benefited from a dropped catch by Prasanna Jayawardene off Tillakaratne Dilshan when on 16 but was handed a marginal leg-before decision by umpire Rod Tucker. It was again Welegedara who earned the breakthrough with a delivery that straightened a little.Younis’ departure quickened proceedings considerably. With a mixture of slog-sweeps, a late cut and a reverse-sweep, Misbah chugged along at close to run-a-ball. Even Rangana Herath, who had troubled Pakistan the most, was reduced to bowling in the rough outside leg stump from over the wicket. The line got rid of Misbah just before tea, though the ball had only brushed his sleeve before being taken by Prasanna Jayawardene. Taufeeq was again left to push on with another new batsman for company. This time, Taufeeq was forced to be the aggressor, with Shafiq refusing to score till a message from the dressing room forced him to look for some runs. Even then, he managed 26 from 94 and ultimately ran out Taufeeq, ironically refusing a sharp single to a man who had been on the field for all three days. That was the only way the immoveable Taufeeq could have got out, but not before Sri Lanka had been deflated. Their nightmare was complete when Paranavitana went immediately. Kumar Sangakkara and Lahiru Thirimanne were positive, though, as they got through 11 overs without further damage.

Woakes and Ambrose put Warwickshire on top

They may have gone into the season as one of the bookies favourites to suffer relegation but, going into the final four weeks of the season, Warwickshire are emerging as genuine title contenders

George Dobell at Edgbaston19-Aug-2011
Scorecard
They may have gone into the season as one of the bookies favourites to suffer relegation but, going into the final four weeks of the season, Warwickshire are emerging as genuine title contenders. If they win this game and other results go their way – notably the match at Blackpool – Warwickshire will go top of the table over the next day or two. As Warwickshire wicketkeeper Tim Ambrose put it: “There isn’t a side whose position I’d swap with. No-one has really considered us as potential winners, but we’ve won more matches than anyone and we have a game in hand.”The next day or two could also have strong ramifications for Hampshire. While they will not be mathematically certain to suffer relegation if they lose here, their realistic chances of survival will be horribly slim. This match isn’t decided just yet, however. While Hampshire only lead by 54 with four of their second innings wickets spent, Warwickshire will not fancy chasing many more than 250 in the fourth innings against Imran Tahir. The pitch is no minefield, certainly, but there’s enough assistance for bowlers of all types to ensure batting is never an easy business. The involvement of Warwickshire’s Rikki Clarke, who nowadays is a vital member of Warwickshire’s bowling attack, may also be heavily restricted after he strained a hamstring. There was a time, while Michael Carberry and Neil McKenzie were together, when it looked as the visitors might well set a testing fourth innings target. But when Carberry, who had looked in tremendous form, played across a swinging yorker and McKenzie felt for a fine ball that bounced and left him, Hampshire were left on the back foot again. Earlier Jimmy Adams missed a straight one and Liam Dawson edged one angled across him. Keith Barker, the left-arm seamer, claimed the first three wickets to fall and generated decent pace and pleasing swing into the right-handers.If Warwickshire do fail to win this match, they may well come to rue their first innings performance with the bat. While they established a useful lead of 109, it could have been far more and a series of soft dismissals meant they squandered the chance to bat Hampshire out of the game.Indeed, for a while, it seemed the visitors might snatch a first innings lead. When Jim Troughton flashed at the second ball of the day and Rikki Clarke held his bat out at one he should have left, Warwickshire had lost their sixth wicket and were still 28 behind. Troughton hasn’t passed 50 in the Championship since April and has only made three half-centuries in this competition in since August 2009.Ambrose and Chris Woakes, however, ensured that Warwickshire retained the initiative. The pair both made polished half-centuries as they added 73 for the seventh wicket, with Woakes following up his excellence with the ball by making the top score of the match so far. Both, however, undid some of their good work with soft dismissals. Ambrose edged a loose drive moments before lunch, while Woakes ran himself out attempting an improbable single. On a blameless pitch, a haul of just two batting bonus points was a missed opportunity. It may yet come back to haunt them.It was another decent day’s work from Ambrose, however. After enduring a miserable 2010 when he considered giving up cricket, he’s back to something approaching his best with bat and gloves. The stats might not show it, but his five half-centuries in a summer of tricky batting conditions have played a huge part in Warwickshire’s success.Ambrose is out of contract in a month and, as yet, has not held formal discussions over his future. While Warwickshire would like him to stay, there will surely be other offers waiting.”I went into this season with an open mind: if I hadn’t enjoyed it, I would have given up cricket,” Ambrose admitted. “But I can honestly say I’m enjoying my cricket as much, if not more, than I ever have done. I haven’t thought about next year just yet. There will be time for that soon. For now I just want to concentrate on winning a second Championship title [Ambrose also won one with Sussex].”I feel I’m in fantastic nick at the moment. I’m seeing the ball really well at the moment and I’m enjoying keeping to this attack. Boyd Rankin is as hostile as anyone out there on his day, while Chris Woakes is a high-class bowler who just keeps building up the pressure on batsmen. I’d fancy us to chase 200 in this game. And, if we wrap this up, we’re in a better position than anyone to win the title.”

Selector forecasts 'specialist' squads

Greg Chappell, the Australian selector, has forecast the selection of distinct “specialist” squads for tours of Sri Lanka and South Africa. The size of the task confronting Australia and its new captain Michael Clarke is placed into context by the fact that this is the first time since 1969-70 that the national side has been asked to make back-to-back overseas Test tours without a significant break or home summer in between. To alleviate the difficulties, Chappell expected a substantial variation in the squads picked for the two series, to help Clarke best adapt his resources to contrasting conditions. As in 1969-70, when the team led by Bill Lawry travelled through India and enjoyed a series victory before venturing to South Africa and being crushed 4-0 in as many Tests, the Australians must make the sharp adjustments from slow subcontinental pitches to fast African tracks. That tour sowed the seeds for Lawry’s eventual sacking as captain, a fate Clarke will be keen to avoid.”If you want to look at it in that light it is [daunting], yes, but if you want to look at it as an opportunity for us to get better, I think it’s a great opportunity,” Chappell told . “There’ll be different challenges on each tour; much like 1969-70 there will be very different conditions on the two parts of the tour so it will be a challenge.”The success of the last Australian tour to South Africa in 2009 may result in a recall for a role-player like the Victorian allrounder Andrew McDonald, who bowled thriftily in partnership with the pace attack during those matches, while in Sri Lanka the spin of Michael Beer, Steve Smith and perhaps Jason Krejza will be employed.”The good news for this generation is they won’t have to go back-to-back from one set of conditions to the other; the Champions League will intervene, so the opportunity will be there to pick specialist groups for the two tours,” said Chappell. “Sri Lanka’s likely to suit spin bowling, South Africa’s likely to suit fast bowling, so the balance of the two groups is likely to be different. It’s an opportunity for experienced players and for budding players to gain some great experience and some great learning about what international cricket is about.”Chappell admitted there were few great players immediately available to the Australian team, and suggested the national selectors would have to make the best of it until a new generation, spearheaded by the likes of the teenaged fast bowler Pat Cummins, was ready for national duty.”If you can find some outstanding matchwinning players, that’s great, but if you haven’t got them available you do the best you can with the combinations you can put together and that’s the challenge for us over the next few years,” said Chappell. “We can see we’ve got some potential champions on the horizon, but it’s going to take time for them to get to the point where they’re going to be ready to play for Australia, so in the meantime you’re looking for the best combinations you can get.”Casting his eye across to India and the coaching role he once held, Chappell said Gary Kirsten’s replacement, the former England coach Duncan Fletcher, was as prepared as anyone could be for the role.”I think it’s an interesting appointment; he’s a very experienced coach, I think he’ll bring a lot to the job,” said Chappell. “Coaching at that level is a challenge in any environment, we know how fanatical India is about the game of cricket with the population and the media population, that brings with it different challenges. Duncan’s been a proven coach and has experienced India from the other side, so if anyone can be ready for it he’ll be as ready as anyone.”
