Ollie Pope shows England class as Scott Borthwick lays solid foundation

Borthwick became the first Surrey batsman to score two Championship hundreds this summer

Calum Trenaman at The Oval23-Sep-2019Surrey 246 for 2 (Borthwick 109*, Pope 78*) v NottinghamshireA century from Scott Borthwick and a strong batting performance from Ollie Pope on the day of his England Test recall defined proceedings before cloud, gloom and rain brought play to an early conclusion during the evening session. Borthwick played patiently for his hundred, reaching 109 from 243 balls, while Pope also displayed his class as he eased to 78 not out.Surrey played for much of the day like reigning champions should – despite their position second from bottom of Division One. Nottinghamshire, the team below, were a stark contrast. Already relegated and with their heart-breaking weekend T20 Blast semi-final loss still fresh, they seemed mentally checked out for the season. They played without direction and with little strategy.Nottinghamshire were not helped by a batsman-friendly pitch and the ease with which Surrey played for much of the day can attest to that. They may also feel aggrieved by the constant changing of balls. The umpires had decided to change the ball twice before the seventh over, and a fourth was selected in the 33rd over.Jake Ball showed international pedigree early on, but Surrey’s opening batsmen saw him off with relatively few jitters. The pair put on 70 for the first wicket, before Paul Coughlin produced the only truly dangerous over of the day. The Nottinghamshire strategy of bowling down the leg side to Mark Stoneman paid off after he edged behind, before 19-year old Jamie Smith was also caught behind for a four-ball duck, pushing too hard at one which moved away slightly.Pope then joined Borthwick at the crease. As his recall to the England Test squad to tour New Zealand was announced, 21-year old Pope displayed the traits that have seen him likened to James Vince and Ian Bell, where batting appears easy, elegant and effortless. Out for much of the season through injury, this match is only his fifth in the Championship. However, with this innings included he has accumulated 533 runs at an average of 88.83 in eight innings. To put that into context, Stoneman is Surrey’s top scorer this season, with 685 runs, but has required 13 matches and 23 innings to do so.His innings here wasn’t without blemish though. Pope escaped a stumping chance and was lucky that Ben Slater dropped a low catch at midwicket too. England needn’t worry. One gets the sense when watching Pope that as the format of cricket increases in difficulty, so does his level of concentration.Surrey’s batsmen have endured a disappointing summer. Following the home loss to Kent in July, Surrey’s director of cricket, Alec Stewart, said: “People say we have batsmen out of form. No, we have batsmen out of runs. They are hitting the ball well, but their shot selection is costing them dearly.” Unfortunately for Surrey, the runs never really came until Pope’s return.Borthwick’s shot selection on this occasion was imperious, offering only a difficult catching chance to leg slip during his entire innings. His innings also marked a batting milestone of which he can be personally proud: as he swept Matt Carter to the backward square leg boundary, he became the first Surrey batsman to hit a second century in the County Championship this summer. Only Pope and captain Rory Burns did so last year, finishing the season with four each in total. The side have missed that weight of runs and are lucky only one team is being relegated from Division One this season.

Ryan Higgins shows his class as Ben Stokes finds his bowling boots

Clark’s stunning Roses hat-trick stuns Yorkshire

ScorecardA maiden first-class century from Ryan Higgins put Gloucestershire in a decent position on the opening day of the Specasavers County Championship match with Durham at Cheltenham. The 23-year-old former Middlesex all-rounder was out in the last over of the day for 105 as his side ran up 315 for seven after winning the toss. Miles Hammond (51) and Gareth Roderick (67) were the other main contributors.Chris Rushworth and Ben Stokes each claimed three of the wickets, Stokes beginning with a seven-over spell that brought him 2 for 10. But Durham’s other England bowler Mark Wood was off the field having physiotherapy during the afternoon and, although he returned to the field, he bowled only six overs in the day.Stokes was the star of the early exchanges, generating pace and bounce from the Chapel End after coming on first change. He pinned Chris Dent lbw for 19 and had Benny Howell taken at gully off a sharply lifting delivery for four after Gloucestershire had elected to bat in bright sunshine. In between the two wickets Stokes struck James Bracey a painful blow on an elbow. After treatment the 21-year-old batsman headed off to hospital for a more extensive examination.Ben Stokes was back in action•Getty Images

Hammond, already a centurion at the Festival, again looked in fine form, putting on 40 with Dent for the first wicket. The left-hander was unbeaten on 36 at lunch, which was taken with Gloucestershire 80 for two off 28 overs.Hammond went on to a half-century off 97 balls, with 9 fours. But he fell early in the afternoon session, bowled by Rushworth, who beat his defensive shot.Roderick survived a couple of blows to the helmet on the lively pitch to post fifty off 93 deliveries, with 8 fours, and shared a fourth-wicket stand of 107 with Higgins to put their side on top.Tea was taken at 218 for three, with Higgins having brought up his half-century off 67 balls, hitting six fours. It was an untimely interval for Roderick, who in the first over after the resumption fell lbw to Salisbury on the back foot.Higgins went past his previous best score of 63 and set his sights on three figures. The injured Bracey returned to help add 64 before departing to the second new ball, an lbw victim for Rushworth.Kieran Noema-Barnett fell cheaply to the same bowler, but Higgins punched the air at reaching his ton off 141 balls, having increased his boundary count to 12.He was caught at backward point off what proved the final delivery of the day to his intense frustration, Stokes claiming a third wicket. He ended the day with three for 40 from an impressive 18.4 overs, while Rushworth had three for 82 off 20.

Mashud calls for domestic schedule rethink

Domestic cricket in Bangladesh should be scheduled during the cooler part of the year, and venues must have better facilities, the former Bangladesh captain Khaled Mashud has urged

Mohammad Isam22-May-2017Domestic cricket in Bangladesh should be scheduled during the cooler part of the year, and venues must have better facilities, the former Bangladesh captain Khaled Mashud has urged. Mashud has asked the BCB to make these changes after many players suffered in the ongoing heat wave across the country. In the 2016-17 season, the National Cricket League first-class tournament began in September but took a break to accommodate the Bangladesh Premier League T20 competition, which was held from November 8 to December 9. The NCL ended after a second phase that stretched from December 20 to January 6.The Bangladesh Cricket League, the four-team first-class competition, then took place from January 28 to March 8. The Dhaka Premier League, which began this season on April 12 and is likely to end in mid-June, has a history of scheduling delays as the major clubs want the top cricketers to participate in the List A competition. Since September last year, the Bangladesh team has been busy playing home or away, so it was hard for the BCB to make the clubs agree to start the DPL in March, when the top cricketers were in Sri Lanka.Mashud, who is also Prime Bank Cricket Club’s coach, said the major domestic competitions such as the DPL and the two first-class competitions must be completed by mid-April.”Implementing the domestic calendar during the season is everyone’s priority,” Mashud wrote in a Facebook post. “It won’t be possible to hold back the [Dhaka Premier] league this season but these concerns should be addressed ahead of the next season. I would urge the BCB to finish the longer-version and one-day competitions by mid-April. They can think of a T20 tournament when the weather gets hotter. I believe such a step will help Bangladesh cricket.”The temperature in Bangladesh touched 38 degrees last week. Mashud cited the examples of Gazi Group batsman Jahurul Islam and Prime Bank wicketkeeper Zakir Hasan, who suffered severe cramps during DPL matches. Zakir was particularly affected during Prime Bank’s May 21 match against Gazi Group Cricketers, suffering seizures despite being given an ice massage in the dressing room. He still hasn’t recovered from his cramps. The DPL has had to deal with other issues too. Avishek Mitra, the Mohammedan Sporting Club batsman, suffered a hamstring injury at the BKSP ground, where there was no ambulance to take him for treatment. In the end, the team had to improvise and use a cycle-van.Mashud also pointed out the effect of power failures, at the BKSP and Fatullah grounds, on players.”Like every other place in the country right now, power failure is also affecting the stadiums,” he wrote. “Cricketers don’t get adequate rest after returning from fielding for 50 overs. While there are generators in place for international matches, it is not the case for domestic games.”It is quite embarrassing to find such a situation in the only List A tournament in the country in which local and foreign stars participate. A bigger challenge awaits from May 24 when the Super League begins. Ramadan is also starting on May 27 which is a major concern for me as a coach.”

Miller dropped as Kings XI captain

Kings XI have dropped David Miller as captain for the remainder of the 2016 IPL season and appointed M Vijay in his place

Cullinan: Miller has paid the price for a team that hasn’t performed

Kings XI have dropped David Miller as captain for the remainder of the 2016 IPL season and appointed M Vijay in his place. The decision came after Kings XI lost five of their first six games of the tournament, with Miller making 76 runs in six innings at a strike-rate of 129.”David Miller continues to be an integral part of the team and is a very strong player of the squad,” Kings XI, last in the league at the moment, said in a statement on the eve of their match against Gujarat Lions in Rajkot.Miller’s appointment as George Bailey’s successor in February was a surprise because he had no significant captaincy experience in South African domestic cricket, having only led KwaZulu Natal in three Africa T20 Cup games in 2015-16 and their Under-19 side once in 2007-08. He has been with Kings XI since 2011, when he joined them as a replacement for England allrounder Dimitri Mascarenhas, and was one of four players retained by the franchise ahead of the 2016 player auction.Vijay also does not have much captaincy experience. He has led Tamil Nadu in only 13 matches across formats – seven T20s – between 2009 and 2011. His form in the IPL season has also been ordinary – 143 runs in six innings at a strike rate of 113.50.

Gayle eyes rest after tiring season

Chris Gayle, fresh off leading Jamaica to the first Caribbean Premier League title, has indicated he is eyeing a long rest after a hectic season of continuous cricket

Renaldo Matadeen30-Aug-2013Chris Gayle, fresh off leading Jamaica to the first Caribbean Premier League title, has indicated he is eyeing a long rest after a hectic season of continuous cricket. In the last 12 months, Gayle has featured in 71 matches across different formats, 35 of them for five domestic T20 leagues around the world.”It’s been a long road, and I am very, very tired mentally,” Gayle said. “It was a challenging time batting-wise in the Tri-nation series (against India and Sri Lanka) and then against Pakistan, and to have come and played a captain’s part in the CPL has been really, really, stressing.”Gayle, whose captain’s knock of 47 not out in the final earned Jamaica the CPL trophy, started the year with a stint with Sydney Thunder in the Big Bash League in Australia. He flew back to the West Indies to play two T20s for Jamaica in the Caribbean T20, scoring 85 and 122 not out .Gayle then travelled back to Australia on West Indies duty for the limited-overs series in February before joining the Dhaka Gladiators in the Bangladesh Premier League. He played only one match in the BPL and hit a century that helped Gladiators make it to the final of the tournament. He then returned home for the series against Zimbabwe. This was a precursor to his stint with Royal Challengers Bangalore in the IPL. The ICC Champions Trophy in England ensued in May before the Tri-nation in the Caribbean. West Indies then played five ODIs and two T20s against Pakistan and Gayle featured in every match of the series.”It’s been quite a lot, and I am really, really happy that it is over now. No more cricket for me until the next three months,” he said.Gayle’s form took a dip after he scored a century in the first match of the Tri-nation series against Sri Lanka, but he managed to finish fourth in the batting charts of the CPL with 234 runs from nine games at an average of 29.25.West Indies are slated to tour New Zealand starting in December. They are due to play three Tests, five ODIs and two T20s.

Captain Jimmy Adams led the way as Hampshire chased down 326 with almost two overs to spare to beat Northamptonshire by eight wickets in their Division Two promotion clash.Adams made 149 before departing with only 49 required as Hampshire eased to their fourth win of the season to maintain their strengthening challenge. The opener hit 23 fours and two sixes from 216 balls and after his departure, Simon Katich’s unbeaten 61 made sure of Hampshire’s victory.Northants left the south coast wondering how they had conceded a powerful position, put together over the previous three days. They went into the last day on 176 for 5 in their second innings, a healthy lead of 256 and with Hampshire struggling to avoid defeat.Chris Wood bowled James Middlebrook in the third over of the day and David Murphy was out one run later at 182, caught in the slips by Neil McKenzie off David Balcombe. Alex Wakely accelerated towards the declaration with an innings of 96 from 191 balls but, seeking the boundary to take him to his third first-class century, could only edge Kabir Ali to Liam Dawson at slip. With his dismissal at 245 for 8, Northants declared leaving Hampshire to score their runs in 72 overs on a wicket less helpful to the pace bowlers than it had been over the first three days. Hampshire responded positively with Adams and McKenzie putting on 150 for the first wicket in 39 overs with McKenzie using his experience to make 76 with 12 fours.Katich then joined Adams and, as Northants struggled for a further breakthrough, took the score to 277 before the latter lifted Luke Evans to Wakely in the covers. But there was plenty of time for Katich and Dawson to get on top of the tiring bowling to rush Hampshire home.Katich took Hampshire to their target with his sixth four while Dawson played a valuable supporting role with his 27 not out. Hampshire, who moved into second in Division Two, now have three matches left to regain the top-flight status they lost last season.

Stevens stars as Surrey slump

Darren Stevens took career-best match figures of 11 for 70 as Kent swept aside Surrey in three days to win their Division Two clash by 265 runs

12-Aug-2011
Scorecard
Darren Stevens took career-best match figures of 11 for 70 as a Kent side, inspired by a backs-to-the-wall, unbeaten century by their captain Rob Key, swept aside Surrey in three days to win their Division Two clash by 265 runs. Facing a mammoth target of 370 for victory, Surrey capitulated inside two hours for a paltry 104 – their worst championship total in a decade – to lose with almost four sessions of the game remaining.Surrey’s demise started as early as the third ball of their second innings when Stevens, Kent’s first-innings hero with career-best figures of 7 for 21 – trimmed the off stump of left-hander Steve Davies with a sublime away-swinger.In poor light Mark Ramprakash shuffled hesitantly forward to a full ball from Matt Coles that plucked out the off stump to spark a dramatic collapse that saw the visitors lose their last nine wickets for 78 runs.Zander de Bruyn became one of eight Surrey batsmen to record a duck in the match when he edged behind off Stevens, who then had Surrey top-scorer Rory Hamilton-Brown (40) caught at third slip at the third attempt by counterpart Rob Key. That gave Stevens his first ever 10-wicket match haul.Jason Roy miscued to mid-off against the same bowler leaving James Tredwell to run through the tail on a crumbling surface with a season’s best haul of 5 for 35.Earlier, Kent batted for the first 24 overs of day three in adding 63 to an already impressive 300-plus lead. Key carried his bat for the first time in four years to score a stoic, unbeaten 110 from 202 balls – his 20th century for Kent at the St Lawrence ground.Backed up by the tailenders and last man Simon Cook in particular, Key’s century included only five fours and came off 192 balls. The former England right-hander went 33 overs without posting a boundary yet his innings, coupled with the bowling of Stevens, ensured that Kent secured their fourth win of the campaign to bank 21 points to Surrey’s three. The only bright moment of a dire game for Surrey came when their doughty right-arm seam-bowler Tim Linley dismissed Kent tailender Adam Ball to secure his 50th championship scalp of the summer. Otherwise, these were three days Surrey will quickly want to forget.Key was the only player of the game to pass 50 as Kent took big strides in staving off the championship wooden spoon while also leaving Surrey’s promotion hopes in tatters.

Azeem Ghumman aims to break into national team

Azeem Ghumman, who will lead Pakistan A in Sri Lanka later this month, has said the tour is an excellent opportunity for him to make a mark and target selection into the national team

Cricinfo staff14-Aug-2010Azeem Ghumman, who will lead Pakistan A in Sri Lanka later this month, has said the tour is an excellent opportunity for him to make a mark and target selection into the national team. Ghumman, who has an impressive first-class record with an average of 48.79 in 17 games, also captained Pakistan in the Under-19 World Cup earlier in the year in New Zealand where they were beaten by Australia in the final.”I have played ample first-class cricket and this tour to Sri Lanka with the A team provides a key opportunity to assert that I have the potential to play top level cricket even at a young age,” Ghumman told . “The board has shown a lot of confidence in me. It is a privilege to lead the team and I look forward to the challenge. Players like Aamir Sajjad, Khurram Manzoor and others have played twice as much as I have. But I am delighted that all of them have supported me and I am looking forward to their continued guidance.”The current Pakistan squad for the tour of England includes several youngsters, like Umar Amin and Azhar Ali, who had their first taste of international cricket there. Though their performances overall have been mixed so far, Ghumman believed the younger players needed more exposure at that level and more opportunities to perform.”The PCB’s move to induct young players for the England tour was a positive one but they need time to perform. Players can’t be judged after just three or four chances,” Ghumman said.Pakistan A begin their tour with a tri-series also involving South Africa before playing two four-day games against Sri Lanka A.”I know it would be a tough challenge because Sri Lanka has the home advantage while South Africa is one of the best sides. But we also have a tough side.”

England are coming into this match after a gap of five days, having last played against South Africa on Monday.Scotland are out of the semi-final race. The Group B table has three teams – England, West Indies and South Africa – still in contention for the semi-final, with England having the lowest net run rate among them. England will be looking to improve their NRR with a big win.”There was a little bit of illness at one point but I think hopefully everyone will be available,” England captain Heather Knight said of player availability ahead of the match. This will also be Scotland wicketkeeper-batter Lorna Jack-Brown’s last international match.Player to watch: Danni Wyatt-Hodge has been solid at top of the order for England. Chasing a tricky target of 125 on a slow Sharjah pitch, with left-arm spinners bowling from both ends, she dropped anchor after the early loss of Maia Bouchier and stitched a 64-run stand with Nat Sciver-Brunt. She finished with 43 in as many balls, which followed her Player-of-the-Match performance of 41 against Bangladesh.Harmanpreet Kaur’s 52 took India to a win against Sri Lanka•ICC via Getty Images

With that win, they also all but sealed a semi-final spot thanks to their net run rate of 2.786. India have two wins in three games. In their previous match, they posted the highest total of the tournament so far – 172 for 3 – and in return bundled Sri Lanka out for 90 to post their biggest win by runs at the T20 World Cup.Related

News brief: Australia have major injury concerns heading into the crucial clash. Just four balls into the match against Pakistan, Tayla Vlaeminck was out with a right shoulder dislocation. To make things worse, captain Alyssa Healy suffered “an acute right foot injury” while batting on 37 as she hobbled off the field with Australia needing 14 runs to win. Both players went for scans on Saturday.India captain Harmanpreet Kaur, who had hurt her neck in the match against Pakistan, turned up with a pain-relief patch on the right side of her neck during the Sri Lanka match. She also didn’t take the field during the chase. Fast bowler Pooja Vastrakar bowled full-tilt before the Sri Lanka game but didn’t play.India will want a big win against Australia. If they win by more than 61 runs, they will move ahead of Australia, thereby automatically qualifying for the semi-final. In a case where India win by fewer than 60 runs, they will hope New Zealand win by a very small margin against Pakistan on Monday. For instance, if India make 150 against Australia and win by exactly 10 runs, New Zealand need to beat Pakistan by 28 runs defending 150 to go ahead of India’s NRR. If India lose to Australia by more than 17 runs while chasing a target of 151, then New Zealand’s NRR will be ahead of India, even if Pakistan beat New Zealand by just 1 run while defending 150.Overall, India have won just eight out of 34 T20Is they’ve played against Australia. Two of those wins came in the group-stage games of previous T20 World Cups, in 2018 and 2020.Players to watch: Two of their best batters finding their form bodes well for India heading into the big game. Harmanpreet and Mandhana’s collaborative effort against Pakistan boosted India’s NRR with the semi-final race heating up. Mandhana, after a cautious start to her innings, changed gears and took on Sri Lanka’s spinners to make 50 off 38 balls. Harmanpreet, continuing from where she’d left against Pakistan, played a classic, hitting eight fours and a six on her way to a 27-ball 52. It was just what India needed to reinvigorate their T20 World Cup campaign.

Marufa, who has played three ODIs but is yet to take a wicket, was mostly economical in her bowling efforts on spin-friendly tracks. There was no place for fast bowlers Jahanara Alam and Fariha Trisna, as well as wicketkeeper-batter Rubya Haider. Jahanara continues to be overlooked and the reasons continue to remain unclear. She has an economy rate of 4.26 in ODIs and has picked up 48 wickets in 52 games. The ODIs between Bangladesh and India will be played on July 16, 19 and 22 at the Shere Bangla National Stadium, the same venue as the three T20Is.Bangladesh squad: Nigar Sultana (capt & wk), Nahida Akter (vice-capt), Murshida Khatun, Fargana Hoque, Sobhana Mostary, Shorna Akter, Ritu Moni, Lata Mondal, Disha Biswas, Marufa Akter, Sharmin Akhter, Sanjida Akter, Rabeya Khan, Sultana Khatun, Salma Khatun, Fahima Khatun, Shamima Sultana
