How Ben Stokes got his bowling mojo back

From an obsession with fitness to fixing bad habits, Stokes’ return to form with the ball is a boon for England

Vithushan Ehantharajah30-Jun-20252:38

Is Stokes’ bowling workload a worry?

In the lead-up to the first Test against India at Headingley, several adjectives were doing the rounds around the England camp. “Freak” and “beast” were among them, with the odd curse word thrown ahead of them for dramatic effect. It is rare that anything in an England training session elicits such a strong reaction. But two days out from the curtain raiser of this five-match series, Ben Stokes had bowled an 11-over spell. That volume of bowling so close to a Test match is unheard of, just two balls shy of the amount he had bowled against Zimbabwe a month earlier. Those sessions are generally about tapering into the grind of five days. Not for, say, going full tilt, at consistent pace and widening the eyes of those watching on.Related

Bazball essentials: England tick two out of three boxes

Stokes has always set the standard in training. Since the start of the year, following an operation on his second right hamstring tear in six months, he has also set himself new standards. Having put in the work behind the scenes, this was about getting overs back into his legs ahead of his second competitive match of 2025.The fruits of that intense labour were clear for all to see in Leeds. Stokes bowled 20 overs in the first innings, taking 4 for 66 across three spells of six, seven and seven. The 15 in the second innings – 1 for 47 – was split five, six and four.Throughout it all, he was England’s most threatening bowler. Across both sets of quicks, he produced the most swing, averaging 1.453 degrees, ahead of Chris Woakes (1.118), Brydon Carse (1.074), Mohammed Siraj (0.899), Jasprit Bumrah (0.895) and the rest. The average speed clocked in at 83.9mph, with a high of 88.9mph. All without even a hint of discomfort.”He was incredible,” said Chris Woakes, who managed just one wicket in 43 overs last week. “Without him having played a load of cricket leading into the Test match, for him to come in and do what he did and hit his straps at good pace… I thought he was amazing.””On a good pitch, he looked threatening every time he came on – with newer ball or older.”I think what you saw last week was he was incredibly consistent with what he was trying to do. His relentlessness and his energy on the ball was as good as I’ve seen for a long time. So that’s a good sign for us and for him.”Ben Stokes gets stuck into England training at Edgbaston•PA Photos/Getty Images

It was instructive that Woakes, as the leader of the attack, lauded the way Stokes took charge. “We all know what Stokes is capable of, but it’s great to have your leader being able to grab the ball like that and showing you the way sometimes.”This bowling iteration of Stokes has not been around for some time. Indeed, the man himself has sought reminders as to just how effective he was, and could be again. On the eve of the first Test, Stokes revealed he uses the 2020 Cape Town Test as a visual guide to the rhythm he wants to feel again. A late, three-wicket spell on the final day blew away South Africa’s tail to take England to victory. Stokes was flying off the back of a legend-making 2019, at the peak of his powers. That Test he averaged 86.4mph with the ball, with a few deliveries clocking in just over 91mph.None of that has been taken for granted, and the man himself sees no reason why he could not return to those heights. That he has opted out of The Hundred this season is a concession that, aged 34, he will have to park other forms of the game if he is to eke out what is left of himself as a top-tier Test quick. There is an alternate universe where Stokes was not pushed down the all-trades path and became a premier seam-and-swing bowler. Throughout his Durham Academy years, he was often the quickest in a cohort that included Mark Wood. There have even been a few Tests, such as 2017 at Lord’s against South Africa, when Stokes was the quicker of the two.Barring a useful growth spurt gave him that “hard-length trajectory”, Stokes’ craft has been honed through his own graft and experimentation, which has not dimmed. He picks up things quickly, such as the wobble seam that James Anderson taught him last year, even if he does not feel comfortable bringing it out just yet as it still feels weird in the hand. During the previous Test, he served up a couple of dipping slower balls to Rishabh Pant that he had workshopped in advance. The left-hander seemed suitably impressed, particularly with the first, which caught him by surprise, even if he did negotiate them well.A combination of England’s backroom staff have assisted his rebuilding effort: assistant coach Paul Collingwood and lead bowling coach Neil Killeen more involved with the skills, with Pete Sim (physical preperation coach) and Ben Davies (men’s physiotherapist) monitoring the physical side of things. But most of the grind has been lonesome, with Chester-le-Street as his usual base.Allowing that work to be both intense and regular has been the knee surgery Stokes underwent in November 2023. In turn, bad habits have been unpicked.Having played through the pain (unwisely at times), he developed two issues. One was that he could not really work on skills or new tricks because of the need to recover from match to match. The other was developing unwanted kinks due to having to overcompensate for the knee which, while putting strain on other parts of his body, also saw him lose a few strengths. The biggest strength he seems to have reclaimed is his braced front leg. Stokes used to take pride in it, often zooming in on side-shots of his action to show it off to the other quicks. That left leg began bending as the knee deteriorated and became ill-equipped to cope with 10-times Stokes’ bodyweight upon landing. As such, Stokes lost pace, which he tried to make up for with his run-up. Since the start of January 2022, only Kagiso Rabada (113) has bowled more front-foot no-balls than Stokes (82). It’s worth noting Rabada has bowled 184.2 more overs than Stokes during this period.Even pre-existing bad habits began to fester. After spells not bowling, Stokes has a knack of curving his approach to the crease, resulting in a conflict between his upper and lower body.He runs in, moves out towards cover, before jumping in the direction of fine leg. Nothing is aligned and the wrist not quite behind the ball. It usually takes a few sessions to sort that one, but when Stokes was unable to get them in the bank, he just had to deal with it. In turn, he lost the effectiveness of his late inswinger, a vital weapon in his armoury. He ended up developing a less effective one by leaping to the left and cantering his arm to try and bend the ball back in.Ben Stokes claimed 5 for 113 at Headingley•Getty Images

All of these now seem like yesterday’s problems. For the first time in five years, Stokes has started a series on solid foundations.”I can’t remember the last time I was able to work so hard on just technical stuff of bowling in particular,” Stokes said before the series, citing the fact the last few years have been mainly spent on keeping his loads up rather than fine-tuning. “To be able to do some really, really good technical work and getting myself back to sort of where I feel like I was before I had my injuries is really good, because there was naturally quite a few changes that crept into my action.”Alongside a “new” knee and reinforced hamstring has been a hyperdrive with his conditioning. Stokes is never one to do things by halves and this is the latest focus of his addictive personality. When he got into golf, he invested in the best clubs. His gaming obsession led to a set-up to rival those of professional eSport teams. Even cutting down on his alcohol consumption led him to investing in a company that specialises in alcohol-free drinks. Now, fitness is the new obsession. Beyond the tell-tale signs of such a fad – the Whoop watch, monitoring his steps, the Instagram reels of gym sessions replete with unenthusiastic voiceovers – has been a striking streamlining of his physique, reducing the strain on joints and improving suppleness.”You can see the physical state he’s in, he’s in really good condition,” Woakes said. “The injuries that he’s had, he’s probably just doubled down on his fitness to make sure he is in the best shape possible to be able to lead this team at his best.”

****

That, ultimately, is what drives Stokes. Not explicitly the desire to be the best bowler he can be, or the fittest he can be, but being the best possible leader for his team. There is plenty at stake in this critical period of his Test captaincy, with the challenge of India and Australia ticked off by next January. Stokes’ availability throughout it all is integral to England’s hopes across both challenges as an allrounder to help balance an XI and provide for a bowling attack that requires his gumption as much as his guidance.Ahead of this week at Edgbaston, it is worth recalling England’s victory over India here back in 2018. Then, Stokes was the quickest bowler in both innings, eventually finishing the match with a spell not unlike his South Africa blitz two years later, taking 3 for 15 in 4.2 overs. That is the next frontier for Stokes, the bowler, to reclaim. Headingley showed the skills and durability remain. Rediscovering the fire and fury of old will take a little longer.

Vincent Kompany warns Bayern Munich need 'perfect game' to beat PSG with Luis Enrique 'confident' of ending German giants' perfect record in Champions League showdown

Bayern Munich head coach Vincent Kompany is wary of the challenge posed by Paris Saint-Germain as his side prepare to face the French giants in the Champions League on Tuesday. The Belgian admitted that his team will need to play a "perfect game" in order to beat the defending champions. Meanwhile, PSG boss Luis Enrique is not too worried about Bayern's historic winning streak and remains confident in his team's ability.

Bayern make record-breaking start to the 2025-26 season

The Bavarian giants have been in red-hot form at the start of the 2025-26 season. After winning the DFL-Supercup in the curtain raiser, Kompany's men have been unstoppable, stitching a remarkable and historic 15-game winning streak, breaking AC Milan's long-standing record of 13 straight wins at the start of the 1992-93 season.

Kompany’s Bayern are beginning to resemble the dominant sides of the club’s golden years – relentless, fluid, and ruthlessly efficient. They have already netted 55 goals this season, averaging just under four per game, a testament to their attacking cohesion. Serge Gnabry and Leon Goretzka look revitalised this season, providing both energy and balance, while the front line – spearheaded by the prolific Harry Kane, who has scored 22 goals in 15 appearances across all competitions, and ably supported by Luis Diaz and Michael Olise – has developed a level of understanding and precision that can unsettle even the most disciplined defences.

AdvertisementAFPKompany wants 'perfect game' from Bayern

However, they face their toughest test of the season yet on Tuesday, as they take on PSG at the Parc des Princes. Speaking to reporters at the pre-match presser on Monday, Kompany said: “You have to believe you can do it. You also need a perfect game, we're playing against the Champions League winners and one of the favourites. It's an extra level of difficulty away from home. We have to believe we'll get our chances.

“I'm really impressed by the team spirit, the ability to win the ball back and the individual quality. At PSG, it's not enough to focus on one player. PSG have always had world-class players. We also have these great qualities – that's why it's such an exciting game.

“Luis Enrique said the same thing. We basically have similar prerequisites. It's not just about dominance. That's what people want to see tomorrow. We've already played each other twice, it was maximum intensity twice. If everyone is fit – which is almost everyone at PSG and us – then it will be a very interesting game.

"For us, a win means a big step towards the top eight – the same goes for PSG. The rivalry arises when clubs meet frequently. What's more, the last few matches have been very exciting for spectators. Hopefully we'll have the game we want tomorrow. But it's difficult to predict because the individual quality of both teams is so high."

Luis Enrique unfazed by Bayern's winning streak

Although Bayern Munich seem like nothing can get in their way at the moment, PSG boss Luis Enrique isn't giving too much importance to numbers. Instead, the former Barcelona coach believes that it will be a game decided by details, a game which they will aim to win with the support of their fans at the Parc des Princes.

"To know who the best team in Europe is, we have to wait until the end of the season," Enrique said on Monday. "We have to wait and see how many trophies the team wins. Right now, they are very strong, they always are. We know how difficult the match will be, but we are ready. There will be similar situations [as the Club World Cup game in July] with the same playing principles. It will be an exciting match.

"Winning 15 games in a row is incredible. They deserve a lot of credit, but tomorrow, at the Parc des Princes, with our supporters and this atmosphere, we have the confidence to try to improve our performance and overcome their pressure. It will be a match similar to the one in the summer."

Dembele has spent the majority of the 2025-26 season so far on the sidelines. playing just eight games and 400 minutes in total. After suffering a hamstring injury on international duty with France in September, he missed seven straight games, before returning as a substitute against Bayer Leverkusen in October. He has since made two more appearances off the bench and has been named in the starting XI once.

"There's no risk with any player. But Ousmane is fit," Enrique revealed. "He's done all the training sessions these past few weeks, he's participated in the last two matches, and has improved his physical condition. He'll play tomorrow of course, I don't know how many minutes but he's ready for the competition. We'll decide how long."

Man Utd have a "rocket" out on loan who could soon surpass Lammens

Manchester United have finally found the solution to their goalkeeper issue. Over the last few years, dating back to the end of David de Gea’s final couple of seasons, there were too many errors made by the Red Devils’ shot stoppers.

Andre Onana was signed by Erik ten Hag as De Gea’s replacement, but he constantly struggled, and his long-term number two, Altay Bayndir, also has his frailties.

Onana made five errors leading to a goal in the Premier League and Europa League last term, as per Sofascore, while Bayindir has made two from just ten top-flight outings in total for United.

Thus, the Old Trafford side signed Senne Lammens this summer, who has since gone on to start two games. His debut against Sunderland showed great promise, and he performed well away to Liverpool.

There have been some real standout moments from Lammens so far in just two games.

Lammens’ key moments for United so far

It has been a superb start for Lammens since breaking into the first team at Old Trafford. He kept a clean sheet on debut and managed to keep the likes of Alexander Isak at bay in the hostile atmosphere that is Anfield.

On his debut, he made some big saves. He pushed a well-struck effort from Granit Xhaka wide and did well to narrow the angle on Chemsdine Talbi’s effort, which he promptly saved.

Teammate Mason Mount said he was “solid” on his first start.

His second appearance saw him pull off a few more great saves, but he did something else integral to help United secure a famous Anfield victory. His execution of Ruben Amorim’s game plan was spot on.

Against the Reds, Amorim asked his new goalkeeper to go long when he had the ball. United aimed to win second balls and get at Liverpool, which worked perfectly for Bryan Mbeumo’s opener.

Lammens was pinpoint with his long passing, pulling the Liverpool centre-backs apart and helping United nail a plan which won them the game.

The Belgian has made a huge impression at Old Trafford already. Competition for places could soon be great, with one on-loan United star a player who could really challenge him.

Man Utd loan star can rival Lammens

There are a fair few goalkeepers on United’s books at the moment. Lammens has cemented himself as the number one under Amorim, Bayndir is his backup, and Tom Heaton is the third choice. Onana will return next season, too, as he is only on loan at Trabzonspor.

However, someone who could really force his way into the reckoning is Radek Vitek. The 21-year-old Czech Republic star is currently on loan at Bristol City in the Championship, where he is shining.

He’s played 11 games so far for the Robins and has an impressive record already. He’s only conceded 11 goals in that time, keeping four clean sheets and winning their player of the month award for August.

The United academy star has pulled off some excellent saves, too. This one against Hull City was arguably his best, diving low to his right with cat-like reflexes and tipping it away from goal.

It was a superb piece of athleticism.

The numbers from Vitek’s time in the West Country further highly Vitek’s talent. He has a save percentage of 75% so far in the Championship, and averages 4.3 completed long passes each game, too.

It will be fascinating to see how Vitek fits in at United. Red Devils correspondent for the Daily Mail, Nathan Salt, said he is “about to rocket” in 2025/26, and it is easy to see why.

It has been an impressive start from the Czech shot-stopper.

Lammens has made a fantastic start to life in Red, but he will have good competition in the next 12 months if these sorts of performances continue. Indeed, with the consistency Vitek is showing this term, there is easily a case to be made that he is even better than the Belgian.

Amorim might one day be in the unenviable position of having to pick between the two. Certainly, Vitek’s form this term will do his United career no harm.

Martin upgrade who's "similar to Postecoglou" in running for Rangers job

Glasgow Rangers need to find the next head coach to carry the club and the new ownership forward after Russell Martin was relieved of his duties from the Ibrox hot seat on Sunday night.

It is hard to make a case for the former Scotland’s international’s defence, because the statistics around his short time at Rangers paint a pretty clear picture.

Martin’s Gers conceded 24 goals in 17 games and won just five times, including once in the Scottish Premiership, which is why it is hard to argue against the decision to part ways with him heading into the international break.

Patrick Stewart and Kevin Thelwell must, though, get this next appointment right to get the Ibrox supporters back on side, and to get Rangers’ season back on track.

Rangers eyeing move for title-winning manager

After Martin, a manager who had never won a top-flight title in his playing or managerial career, the Gers may turn to a proven winner to bring success back to the club.

Manager Focus

Who are the greatest coaches in the land? Football FanCast’s Manager Focus series aims to reveal all.

According to Football Insider, the Light Blues have identified four managers who are not the frontrunners to replace Martin in the dugout for the clash with Dundee United after the break.

The report claims that Steven Gerrard, Sean Dyche, Danny Rohl, and Kevin Muscat are the four head coaches in the running to land the job at Ibrox.

Muscat, who played for the club in 2002, is an interesting contender for the vacant position because he could be an upgrade on Martin and Rangers’ own version of Ange Postecoglou.

Why Rangers should appoint Kevin Muscat

Journalist Gavin Berry recently compared the English-born boss to the former Celtic manager, who worked with Postecoglou as his assistant at Melbourne Victory.

The reporter said: “I just think the style that he plays, similar to Postecoglou, obviously worked under him. We know it works in the Premiership. I think he’s someone who could take a squad and get the most out of it.”

Postecoglou, of course, won two Premiership titles in two seasons with the Hoops, including a domestic treble in his second campaign, with his high-octane, exciting, brand of football.

Muscat’s managerial record since going down his own path as a head coach suggests that he could bring similar success to Ibrox as a big upgrade on Martin in the dugout at Rangers, as he has shown that he can win titles.

As you can see in the table above, he has won a league title in two of the last three seasons, and is on course for a third title in four seasons unless Rangers can convince him to make the move to Ibrox.

He won the J1 League with Yokohama F. Marinos in the 2022 campaign and currently manages SH Port, which is the club he joined at the start of the 2024 season.

His impressive league form in Japan and China shows that he would come in as an upgrade on Martin, because Muscat has proven that he can instill a winning mentality in multiple countries and leagues.

Muscat, who has won seven trophies (Transfermarkt) in his managerial career, knows what it takes to win trophies and to win titles, which is exactly what the Gers need in this moment in time.

Rangers have not won a trophy since Philippe Clement lifted the League Cup in 2023, but the SH Port boss could bring glory back to Ibrox as the 49ers’ own version of Postecoglou.

It is now down to Stewart and Thelwell to convince Muscat to move on from the Chinese club, in spite of his side being on the verge of winning a league title.

Leeds now lining up January approach for Carvalho, could be ideal for Farke

Leeds United are now lining up a January move for Brentford’s Fabio Carvalho, amid concerns about their lack of attacking threat.

After picking up just one point from their previous three Premier League games, Leeds picked up an important three points against a struggling West Ham United side last time out, meaning they are now six points clear of the relegation zone.

Survival will undoubtedly be Daniel Farke’s main goal this season, and the manager clearly thought bolstering his frontline was important when it comes to strengthening his side’s chances of avoiding the drop, bringing in the likes of Dominic Calvert-Lewin and Lukas Nmecha in the summer.

However, it was the Championship promotion-winning duo of Brenden Aaronson and Joe Rodon that provided the goals against West Ham, with Calvert-Lewin failing to provide any sort of threat, recording an xG of just 0.1.

Nmecha hasn’t exactly been prolific since his arrival either, failing to score since converting a penalty against Everton on the opening day, and the Whites have now joined the race to sign a new forward.

According to a report from MOT Leeds News, there are concerns about the lack of attacking threat Leeds have posed this season, meaning they are keen to strengthen their forward line in January, and they are now lining up a loan approach for Brentford’s Carvalho.

The board are considering several new attacking signings, including a striker, but they are also keen to inject some more creativity into the squad, meaning the Whites are now prepared to battle it out with Bundesliga clubs for the Brentford forward’s signature.

The 23-year-old has found game time difficult to come by this season, but there is a feeling he could be ideal for Farke, given his ability to play in a number of positions, with the German a fan of versatile players.

The Portuguese attacker is capable of playing on both wings, in the number 10 role and even at centre-forward, with his attacking quality regularly on display during a loan spell at Fulham, picking up ten goals and eight assists in the Championship during the 2021-22 campaign.

The former Hull City loanee also impressed with the Tigers, scoring nine Championship goals in the 2023-24 season, during which time he was lauded as “fantastic” by Fabrizio Romano.

That said, there may be some concerns about the fact the four-time Portugal U21 international is yet to establish himself as a key player for Brentford, despite scoring a dramatic late equaliser against Chelsea back in September.

Carvalho is yet to make a name for himself in the top flight, but he would still be a low-risk signing for Leeds, given that they are aiming to get a loan deal done this January.

Worse than Kerkez: Slot must drop 5/10 Liverpool man who lost the ball 9x

Arne Slot gambled on Wednesday when he decided to exclude from his matchday squad the majority of his first-team Liverpool stars.

But the Dutch tactician didn’t gamble with his side’s chances of advancing against Crystal Palace to the quarter-finals of the Carabao Cup. The result, plainly, always felt the probable outcome from the build-up, and Liverpool are now condemned to six losses from seven games.

Liverpool did not have the firepower to overwhelm Oliver Glasner’s side, and so he has rested his heavyweights in the hope that the Reds will see an upswing in form across the crucial coming period of football. Up next: Aston Villa and Manchester City in the Premier League, with the visit of Real Madrid in the Champions League in between.

With that in mind, the decision to field a second-string team was understandable, but there was a dearth of experience, and with the outcome almost pre-determined, unleashing the already under-fire Milos Kerkez has backfired.

Milos Kerkez struggles again

Since September 27th, Liverpool have lost more games than any other side across Europe’s top five leagues. Defensively, it’s been a bit lackadaisical and erratic.

In this regard, summer recruit Kerkez has really struggled. The Hungarian arrived from Bournemouth for £45m in July but is unrecognisable to the Premier League Team of the Year inclusion who inspired such awe on the south coast last year.

Slot and Kerkez will take solace in the 21-year-old having created two chances, finding his man with both attempted crosses and connecting well with the lively Rio Ngumoha. However, he also lost the ball 19 times and won only three of his nine contested duels (data via Sofascore).

It was a display that, once again, left plenty to be desired, and Liverpool still wait to see the left-back form into a worthy part of Slot’s project.

There is, however, time on his side. But the same cannot be said for another part of the Liverpool backline, a player who has been at the heart of a series of transfer sagas in recent years and may now be heading for the axe.

Slot must ditch Liverpool stalwart

Liverpool have undergone plenty of change this year, and there’s a sense that some of the veterans need to stick around. This isn’t true in every case, though.

For so long, Joe Gomez has been a part of the club, instrumental in the rise of Jurgen Klopp and the longest-serving active first-team player – and that even before Trent Alexander-Arnold packed and left.

Virgil van Dijk, Joe Gomez, Joel Matip

The 28-year-old was part of a three-man backline in the cup, but Slot’s attempts to negate the Palace threat came undone when Gomez found himself at the epicentre of the deadlock-breaker. It was his loose touch that gifted Ismaila Sarr the first goal of his brace, ever the bane in Liverpool’s side.

Perhaps Gomez’s miscontrol was more unfortunate than clumsy, but there was still a flash of a chance to clear the danger and keep that elusive clean sheet.

Moreover, Gomez’s errant pass led to the Eagles’ conclusive third strike, and Liverpool World saw it fit thereafter to hand the England international a 5/10 match rating.

After attracting interest from Newcastle United and, curiously, Palace over the past two summer transfer windows, Liverpool may come to regret not cashing in, especially if that had led to the likes of Marc Guehi, who remains under Glasner’s wing but could have been fielded for the hosts on Wednesday.

After such sweeping changes this summer, Liverpool were always going to need time to develop and reshape as a unit. But this feels messy.

We are not seeing a coherent squad ratcheting up the pace, but instead a sour situation that now threatens to spill over if form is not found before Aston Villa’s trip to Anfield on Saturday evening.

If Slot has learned anything new, it’s that Gomez cannot be placed into the starting line-up against Unai Emery’s well-oiled team.
