Rangers must regret losing the "Mbappe of Scottish football" for nothing

Glasgow Rangers head coach Russell Martin is under plenty of external pressure after a difficult start to his time in the dugout at Ibrox this season, with some noticeable booing and chanting at recent games.

The former Southampton boss has failed to win any of his four Scottish Premiership matches in charge of the Light Blues so far, and failed to qualify for the league phase of the Champions League, losing 9-1 to Club Brugge on aggregate.

There is still plenty of time left to see how things pan out, though, because he had 12 summer signings and it will take time to assess whether they were strong additions or not.

Summer transfer windows can make or break managers, as former Rangers head coach Michael Beale found out in the harshest way in 2023.

Michael Beale's worst Rangers deals

Beale signed eight players on permanent deals in the summer of 2023. Jack Butland is the only one of those eight players who started the club’s most recent game against Celtic.

Danilo was signed for £6m from Feyenoord and he has only scored nine goals in 39 appearances in the Scottish Premiership, missing 53 matches through injury in that time, per Transfermarkt.

Sam Lammers arrived from Atalanta for a fee of £3m in the same window. He scored two goals in 31 games for Rangers, per Transfermarkt, before being sold to FC Twente last year.

First Impressions

What did pundits and fans alike think about their new star signing when they arrived? Football FanCast’s ‘First Impressions’ series has everything you need.

As well as making poor signings, Beale also allowed several quality players to leave the club that summer, including electric forward Ryan Kent.

Michael Beale had a howler with Ryan Kent

Despite working with the English winger as Steven Gerrard’s assistant in the past, Beale was unable to get the best out of the former Liverpool man at Ibrox as the head coach.

Kent played 22 times for the English tactician in all competitions in his last season in Glasgow, but only found the back of the net twice in that time, per Transfermarkt.

The left winger was once described as the “Mbappe of Scottish football” by Specs Gonzalez, whilst speaking on Sky Sports, but he was anything but Mbappe-esque under Beale.

As you can see in the table above, Kent was far more prolific and creative throughout his Rangers career without Beale as his head coach, his output with and without him makes that very clear.

IbroxNoise noted at the time that the English forward’s decline under the former assistant manager was because the system being deployed meant that he had to play as a number ten rather than as a winger.

If asked to picture a Ryan Kent goal or assist for Rangers, most supporters would likely picture him on the left flank, cutting in or getting to the byline. The former being what happened in the clip above.

Beale’s wingerless system did him no favours and that was why it was not a surprise when the forward decided to let his contract run down in the summer of 2023, rather than committing his future to the club with his former Liverpool academy coach in charge.

This meant that Rangers lost Kent, a player once compared to Mbappe, for nothing that summer because their manager did not play a system that got the best out of him.

Instead, Beale played a system that attempted to accomodate the three central players he signed, Danilo, Cyriel Dessers, and Lammers. Only one of those three players remains at Ibrox, Danilo, and he looks set to be a back-up to Bojan Miovski and Youssef Chermiti this season.

Rangers must rue losing star who's worth millions more than Chermiti

Rangers must rue losing this “incredible” star who would now be their most valuable player.

ByDan Emery Sep 6, 2025

Therefore, Beale had a howler with Kent because he did not find a way to get the best out of a player who could have been a huge threat for his side down the left flank, given his return of goals and assists in his career at Rangers prior to the manager’s appointment.

Rana 81 in Royals win as CSK batting muddle continues

Rajasthan Royals secured their first win of IPL 2025 with Hasaranga also playing a big part

Pujara: Dhoni and Jadeja could have gone harder

A blistering assault from Nitish Rana and Wanindu Hasaranga’s clever wristspin bowling handed Rajasthan Royals (RR) their first win and Chennai Super Kings (CSK) their second successive defeat in IPL 2025.After Rana crashed 81 off 36 balls, joining RR’s fastest half-centurions, Ruturaj Gaikwad anchored CSK’s chase of 183 with a fifty of his own. But Hasaranga’s variations, especially the wrong’un, exposed CSK’s soft underbelly and put the target beyond their reach.Though Ravindra Jadeja mounted a late charge against the seamers – he remained unbeaten on 32 off 22 balls – and the margin of victory was only six runs, RR were always ahead in the game.Sandeep Sharma, picked ahead of Jofra Archer to defend 19 off the final over, had MS Dhoni holing out for 16 off 11 balls with his first legal ball of the over and finished the job for RR.Rana aces his match-up against AshwinRiyan Parag had batted at No. 3 in RR’s first two matches this season. On the eve of this game, coach Rahul Dravid had also backed Parag at that position, but they ended up bumping Rana to No. 3, at Parag’s expense, to take advantage of a match-up with R Ashwin. Before Sunday’s fixture, Rana had hit 108 off 58 balls from Ashwin being dismissed in the IPL. By the time, Ashwin was introduced into the attack, Rana had already run away to a swift start – 27 off 13 balls. He greeted the spinner with a sequence of 6, 6, 4 and continued to attack him. By the time Ashwin dismissed Rana for the first time in the IPL, off his 71st ball to him, Rana had extended his tally to 171. Ashwin had to dip into his old trick – pause and deliver – to have an advancing Rana stumped off an off side wide.Rana made 58 of RR’s 81 runs came in the powerplay, which offset low scores for Yashasvi Jaiswal and Sanju Samson.2:35

Bishop explains what makes Noor special

CSK pull it backNoor Ahmad, the left-arm wristspinner, struck in his first over when he had Samson caught at long-off for 20 off 16 balls. He proceeded to remove Dhruv Jurel for 3 off 7 balls and moved to the top of the purple cap leaderboard. Ravindra Jadeja bowled only two overs, but he did a good job himself by not conceding a single boundary.Matheesha Pathirana and Khaleel Ahmed, who had dismissed Jaiswal in the powerplay, then slowed RR down even further in the end overs.Shimron Hetmyer, who batted behind Hasaranga at No. 7, could’ve been out for 3 had IPL debutant Jamie Overton not dropped a skier. Overton’s evening only got worse after he had leaked 30 runs from his first two overs in the powerplay. His bowling stint ended right there.Hetmyer got to 19 off 16 balls before Pathirana drew another mis-hit, Ashwin hanging onto the skier this time. Pathirana and Khaleel gave away only 17 runs off the last three overs to keep RR below 190. They had looked good for a much bigger total, especially when Rana was on song.CSK’s go-slowArcher and former Super King Tushar Deshpande, however, snatched the momentum away from CSK in the powerplay. Archer kicked off RR’s defence with a wicket-maiden in which he had Rachin Ravindra nicking off a 145kph delivery that reared up off the deck for a duck. At the other end, Deshpande hit Gaikwad on his unprotected elbow.Rahul Tripathi was going nowhere. He gave up his stumps only to swish and miss. When Archer bowled a slower legcutter, though, Tripathi got going with a six over short fine. Gaikwad then picked Sandeep off for three fours in the last over of the powerplay as CSK ended the phase with a more respectable 42 for 1, having been on 5 for 1 in three overs.1:03

Bishop: Hasaranga’s googlies worked for him

Hasaranga wrecks CSK’s middle orderHasaranga struck with his very first ball, having Tripathi holing out for 23 off 19 balls. With Hasaranga bowling in tandem with Maheesh Theekshana, CSK unleashed their Impact Player, Shivam Dube, on the spinners. Dube cracked two sixes off Hasaranga before the wristspinner had him chipping a wrong’un to cover, where Guwahati’s very own Parag pulled off a spectacular, one-handed grab to cut Dube’s innings short at 18 off 10 balls.Vijay Shankar, who had replaced Deepak Hooda, failed to pick his first ball, a wrong’un from Hasaranga, which almost shaved the off stump. In his next over, though, he knocked Vijay over with a loopier wrong’un for 9 off 6 balls.Gaikwad kept CSK in it with low-risk, high-percentage batting. He brought up a 37-ball half-century, his second in three games, but the lack of power at the other end ramped up the pressure on him. When Hasaranga dangled a wide legbreak, Gaikwad could only drag it to long-on.He left CSK needing 54 off 25 balls. It became 39 off 12 balls after Theekshana bowled a boundary-less 18th over to Dhoni and Jadeja. Dhoni then started the penultimate over, bowled by Deshpande, with a ramped four and then flat-batted the seamer over his head for six in a 19-run over, but they were left with too much to do in the end.Archer, who had bowled three excellent overs in the powerplay, including a wicket-maiden, wasn’t called to bowl at the death. Sandeep stepped up to have Dhoni holing out for 16 off 11 balls with a low full-toss, which sealed the deal.

Samson set to miss RR's game against LSG; Parag to lead again

Rajasthan Royals (RR) captain Sanju Samson is set to miss the team’s IPL 2025 fixture against Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) in Jaipur on Saturday with an abdomen injury.Vice-captain Riyan Parag will lead RR, while 14-year-old left-hand batter Vaibhav Suryavanshi is one of the options to replace Samson in the XI. If he does play, he will make history as the IPL’s youngest debutant. RR don’t have another opener in the squad apart from Suryavanshi, though they could bring in Shubham Dubey or wicketkeeper batter Kunal Singh Rathore and play a makeshift opener.Samson, who played as a batting impact player alone in RR’s first three matches while recovering from a finger injury, sustained an abdominal strain during their seventh game of the season against Delhi Capitals (DC) on April 16. He was forced to retire hurt after scoring 31 off 19 balls, and RR eventually lost the match in a Super Over. Parag, who had captained RR for the first three games this season, will take charge again.Suryavanshi, who turned 14 on March 27, made headlines at the IPL 2025 auction when, at just 13 years old, he was signed by RR for INR 1.1 crore to become the youngest player to earn an IPL contract. He had already represented India Under-19 as an opener by then, smashing a 58-ball century in a four-day match against Australia Under-19. He went on to play a key role in India’s run to the final of the 2024 Under-19 Asia Cup, where he scored 176 runs at an average of 44. He also has a triple-century to his name – an unbeaten 332 – in the Randhir Verma Tournament, an U-19 competition in Bihar.Related

Royals unsure if Samson will play LSG game

RR sweat on Samson's fitness in a bid to revive their season

There is no timeline yet on Samson’s return to fitness. He is RR’s second highest run-getter this season with 224 runs in seven innings at an average of 37.33. Apart from Samson and RR’s top-scorer Yashasvi Jaiswal (233 runs in seven innings), no other batter has crossed 200 runs this season, and they are languishing at eighth position on the IPL 2025 points table, avoiding last place only on the basis of NRR. After Saturday’s fixture, RR’s ninth game is on April 24, an away fixture against Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB).

Outclassed by Foden: Pep must drop Man City star who "created nothing"

A much-changed Manchester City side still had enough in their tank to comfortably breeze past Huddersfield Town 2-0 in the third round of the EFL Cup on Wednesday night.

The Terriers used to host Premier League matches, but the hosts now find themselves in League One, with the gulf between the two teams very much evident come the final whistle as City’s quality inevitably shone through.

In particular, Phil Foden had a sublime night in West Yorkshire as the six-time Premier League title winner reminded everyone of how superb he can be when on top form.

Foden's standout performance in numbers

It shouldn’t be the greatest shock in the world that Foden showed up and performed with the swagger he did, considering the 45-time England international does have 102 goals for the Citizens at a senior level.

Still, in recent times, Foden hasn’t always performed at his exquisite best, but he very much turned on the style under the John Smith’s Stadium floodlights to spearhead the youthful XI picked by Pep Guardiola to a straightforward win.

It would be Foden who would break the deadlock after an uneventful start to the Cup clash, with the tricky number 47 linking up with young prospect Divine Mukasa with a quick exchange of passes, before hammering home this fierce effort past a helpless Lee Nicholls.

He would then turn provider late on for Savinho to bag a confidence-boosting effort, with three key passes and two successful dribbles by his name come the full-time whistle, as per Sofascore, only reinforcing how hard he was to contain from the home side’s perspective.

With a further goal and assist also coming his way against Manchester United and Napoli, too, it appears that Foden is back to his stylish peak, after losing his way somewhat with niggly injury setbacks.

Foden’s obvious class made up for other attackers underperforming with the spotlight on them, with one promising City starlet – in particular – just lacking that final end product that the Stockport-born ace showed off in abundance against Lee Grant’s men.

The Man City star in danger of being axed

That isn’t to say that none of Guardiola’s rotated team didn’t perform against their lowly opposition, with Mukasa presumably proud of his efforts come the end of the 2-0 victory, having assisted Foden’s opener. On his senior debut, it was a memorable night for the teenage attacker.

Moreover, Nathan Ake stood firm throughout against the League One hosts, having just been a substitute against Arsenal, with a staggering 120 accurate passes standing out, alongside the Dutchman winning two aerial duels when rarely tested.

Oscar Bobb also showed flashes of his excellence in West Yorkshire, but it’s unfortunately unlikely to be enough for the Norwegian youngster to remain in the first team fold for Premier League clashes to follow.

After all, while the slick winger did burst forward and complete three successful dribbles, he very rarely tested Nicholls in the same way Foden did, with the 22-year-old needing to find his shooting boots to guarantee more regular senior minutes.

Indeed, despite lasting the full 90 minutes and amassing a hefty 87 touches of the ball, Bobb would only manage to register one limp effort at the home side’s busy goal.

Moreover, on the creative front, the hot-and-cold number 52 would also give up the ball a high 17 times, leading to City content creator Steven McInerney stating that the Oslo-born forward “created absolutely nothing” of note.

Manchester Evening News’ Simon Bajkowski was a tad more complimentary with his post-match musings, having handed out a 7/10 rating to Bobb after the dust had settled slightly on the Cup win.

Still, despite hailing the 22-year-old as ‘tricky’, Bajkowski did also emphasise that the Scandinavian attacker must have been left with the feeling after the game that he could have offered more to make a compelling case for consistent first-team minutes moving forward.

Having only been present on the pitch for a mere 18 minutes across City’s last three games heading into this Cup encounter – after starting against Brighton and Hove Albion at the close of August – it does feel as if Bobb will just return to the bench now, while Foden aims to impress even more.

Carson wins the day with maiden first-class ton

But Sussex squander any advantage by losing 6 for 8 either side of lunch

Alan Gardner09-May-2025

Jack Carson celebrates after reaching his century•Getty Images

The question of who’s winning is often a complicated one in cricket. At Hove, Worcestershire won the toss, before Sussex’s openers jounced along to 80 without loss in the first 90 minutes. Having apparently gained the upper hand, the home side then squandered any advantage by losing 6 for 8 either side of lunch. But just as Worcestershire seemed to have got on top, Jack Carson strode forward to win the day with a marvelous, maiden first-class hundred.Carson’s impassioned celebration on reaching three figures told of personal significance, while the accompanying standing ovation around the ground indicated its importance to Sussex as a collective. Carson had walked out with the score on 88 for 6 but bent his shoulder to the wheel to add almost 200 for the last four wickets – aided in no small part by the dogged contribution of Sussex’s debutant No. 11, James Hayes, who faced 126 balls to finish on 33 not out. While the focus for England selection discussions at Hove has centred on Tom Haines, whose half-century propped up Sussex during the morning as well as extending his lead at the top of the Division One run-scoring charts, it may not be long before Carson is touted as a more rounded alternative to Shoiab Bashir in the Test side. Both Haines and Carson are likely to come into contention for the England Lions matches against India A at the end of the month.Hayes, a last-minute loan signing from Nottinghamshire, was only in the side due to an injury suffered by Sussex’s West Indies international Jayden Seales. The 23-year-old, with just three List A appearances to his name, survived a tough chance to third slip before he had scored, as well as a more straightforward stumping that Gareth Roderick couldn’t collect when he was on 27, but showed a solid technique and impressive fortitude throughout.Carson’s pugnacious innings was chanceless, although he got off the mark with a fence wide of the slip cordon that went for four. He found support all the way down the order, adding 49 with Ari Karvelas for the ninth wicket and then 73 with Hayes, as Sussex wrestled the initiative back on a topsy-turvy day. Worcestershire showed character during their mid-innings fightback, Tom Taylor playing the pub landlord with a five-for to restore order, but they will have to dig deep with the bat to put winning this game back on the agenda.Tom Taylor made a dent in Sussex’s top order•Getty Images

After the high-rolling start, Sussex’s top order went bankrupt, in the words of Ernest Hemingway, “gradually, then suddenly”. Haines and Daniel Hughes raised 46 without loss from the first 10 overs (40 of those in boundaries), to leave Worcestershire fans wondering quite what Brett D’Oliveira had been thinking at the toss. Ben Gibbon’s introduction had seen him cuffed unceremoniously for three consecutive fours by Hughes, but he followed up with back-to-back maidens, while Matthew Waite made a similarly thrifty start from the Sea End.Ever so steadily, Worcestershire began to get a grip on the scoring, and Waite made his frustrations clear as Haine twice edged him for four in the space of three balls. Another brace of fours in Waite’s next over bore a more authoritative stamp, as Haines whipped through midwicket and behind square to bring up a 67-ball half-century. At the end of the 22nd over, Sussex were 80 for 0 and perhaps envisioning a bountiful day of run-harvesting beneath clear blue skies. Then came the crash. Taylor found Hughes’ outside edge as the Australian aimed a lavish drive to be caught at second slip, before removing Tom Clark in the same over, the Sussex No. 3 padding up to a ball that looked like it would have troubled middle and off. The scoreboard was still stuck on 80 when Tom Alsop feathered a catch behind to give Taylor his third; and with only one run added, James Coles perished attempting to drive the final ball of the morning through cover, a thick edge off Ben Allison ending in the hands of fourth slip.In the Spen Cama Pavilion, suddenly there was only one thing on the menu. “You should never give your wicket away before lunch,” one Sussex member lamented, though more in sorrow than in anger. On Clark, who had received his county cap before play, the verdict was more damning: “He should give it back!” Worse was to come for Sussex, though sadly the view on John Simpson’s even more disastrous leave went unrecorded. In the first over back, Haines edged Taylor into the hands of Allison at first slip, whose attempted juggle was taken by the sub, Rob Jones, at second. With the score still on 81, Sussex had now lost 5 for 1 in the space of 6.4 overs. Simpson, so often the bulwark at No. 6, then tried to let one go only for Taylor to bring the ball back to hit the top of off stump. Having been 0 for 15 from his opening spell, Taylor now had 5 for 20 from 10.3, Sussex almost single-handedly halted in their tracks by his 33-ball rampage. In the end, Sussex’s stuttering progression to 284 represented a significant recovery. Although Fynn Hudson-Prentice and Ollie Robinson both departed to soft dismissals off Gibson and Ethan Brookes respectively, Carson was adroit in marshalling the lower order, moving to a 69-ball fifty during his stand with Karvelas and then continuing to pick off boundaries, including one flicked six over midwicket, as he pushed on past his previous first-class best of 97, in the process securing Sussex a batting point that had not looked likely when he walked in.
