Ollie Robinson's lack of appetite raises more doubts about Test recall

Fast bowler limited to seven overs, including four of spin, as Leicestershire ease to draw

Leicestershire 210 and 333 for 9 (Patel 68, Swindells 57, Azad 54, Lenham 4-84) drew with Sussex 450 (Clark, 138, Carter 72, Haines 50)Around the time that Matthew Potts was summoning another irresistible fast-bowling performance that seems bound to catapult him into an England Test squad for the first time, Ollie Robinson was bowling off-spin for Sussex. One looked hungry for an England debut, one looked as if his England career was in abeyance. Robinson bowled only seven overs in the day, three of seam, four of spin. He would have been better with a literal lack of hunger before the match – the after-effects of his food poisoning on the eve of the game, according to Sussex’s head coach, Ian Salisbury, remained debilitating.”Ollie wasn’t himself all match after the food poisoning,” he said. “He just couldn’t perform. The sickness affected him massively, he had two drips on the first day.”In theory, Robinson could bowl out the New Zealanders at Hove next week and go to Lord’s with his form and reputation restored, but the squad is expected to be chosen before that game with a series of gatherings and fitness assessments in mind. To name Robinson in the squad – and also to allow him to have a go at the tourists to prove his worthiness – would be a considerable show of faith. In some ways, England’s decision will reflect their view of county cricket because Robinson is the archetypal county cricketer in an age when generally they are looking for nothing of the sort.As a county-style bowler, a player hardly in vogue, his returns over four seasons were exceptional. He had learned to seek out seam or swing depending on conditions. And he had an excellent record with the old ball as well as the new. He forced his selection through performance. He had four hot years; Potts has had four hot weeks.Thirty-one Test wickets at 21.28 in his maiden summer of 2021 suggested he had made the transition, but even with such an outstanding record, his suitability for international cricket remains under question. There were the dubious social media posts, the undercurrent of unreliability. But he was indisputably one of England’s premier seam bowlers and as such he was awarded his first central contract in October.Perhaps he is not the sort to be embraced by the system. Not everybody is. His stamina and fitness levels for Test cricket were brought into question by England’s bowling coach, Jon Lewis, in January, before he broke down before the start of a Test series in the West Indies that represented his chance to claim a regular spot. Then came the recent Championship match at Worcester where England blocked his inclusion on fitness grounds and he pleaded a tooth infection. In Leicester, thanks to food as yet unknown, he has failed to make his case. In only his second Championship appearance of the season, he bowled only one over on the first day because of his stomach upset. Whilst not knowing his true medical state by the final day (and it should not be airily dismissed) he would have been better being sick with exhaustion on the pitch. He still had questions to answer and he flunked the examination. He bowled three overs with the second new ball, taking a wicket with a loosener as Ben Mike checked a drive to extra cover, where Cheteshwar Pujara held a fine diving catch, and was then withdrawn from the attack. He reappeared with the second new ball still only 12 overs old to bowl four overs of inconsequential offspin. Then no more. Barring, presumably, a bit of nausea and a lie down.It should be conceded that he is a respectable offspinner. As a youngster, he was a batter who bowled spin, he has bowled it at times for Sussex with some success and he sent down three overs in this guise in sunglasses during the Adelaide Test in December. But on the day that Sussex needed a matchwinner and England needed a signal, circumstance dictated that he could provide neither. An increasingly pedestrian fourth-day surface at Leicester offered slow turn and was ultimately so dispiriting for all the bowlers that Leicestershire, still 45 runs behind at the start of the final day with only five wickets left, survived at 333 for 9 with a lead of 93, with Harry Swindells and Callum Parkinson stubbornly repelling 46 overs in an eight-wicket stand of 111.The result leaves both counties without a win at the foot of the Second Division, but it will be Sussex who will be deflated after seemingly being destined to claim their first Championship victory since April last year only for 27 overs lost to afternoon showers to cost them dear. Even when Delray Rawlins prised out both Swindells and Parkinson in rapid succession, Swindells’ 57 from 178 balls coming to grief at short extra, Parkinson (45 from 176) bowled by a quicker one, there was no Robinson to be seen. But if not Robinson then whom? The minute that England’s revamped trio of Rob Key, Brendon McCullum and Ben Stokes begin to discuss their fast-bowling stocks, their sense of optimism will come under serious challenge.Of the 11 specialist quicks to play in a Test in the last two years, only five featured in this round of the Championship. Of those, the old stagers, James Anderson and Stuart Broad, were as resilient as ever and are certain selections after being excluded from an experimental West Indies tour party. Craig Overton had a knee-injury scare before returning to duties in Somerset’s win in Bristol, but Robinson must now be a major doubt. Some of the absentees might yet make a surprise inclusion in the England squad. Chris Woakes remains afflicted by shoulder and knee trouble; Olly Stone and Sam Curran are recovering from stress fractures of the back (Curran bowled two overs of spin himself at Beckenham); and Jofra Archer and Mark Wood will attempt returns from elbow operations at some point this summer in white-ball cricket. Two absentees from the Roses match, however, cannot be entirely ruled out. Lancashire’s Saqib Mahmood has a stiff back and little cricket behind him, but there is no diagnosis about a serious injury. The same can be said of Matt Fisher, whose briefly successful start to the season at Yorkshire quickly gave way to fears about a “hot spot” in his back and estimates of a precautionary four-week lay-off that has now elapsed. their fitness remains unknown. Tom Helm, of Middlesex, has long been monitored, and has 14 wickets at 12.28 but he again is far from fit.Fast-bowler injuries are not just afflicting England wannabees. Don Topley, the former Essex seamer, and commentator, calculated that around 30 quick bowlers were absent for the start of the season. Since then, the counties have undertaken six matches apiece in a relentless opening phase of seven matches in as many weeks. Demanding pitches, and high scores have made them the equivalent of seven back-to-back Tests. The Dukes balls are said to be not swinging as much and are prone to going soft and out of shape. Perhaps fast bowlers are breaking down just by thinking about it.

Reports from "outstanding" star’s country claiming he’s signed for Man City

With the January transfer window now well underway, Manchester City have already seemingly made their mark, with reports in one target’s home country now claiming that he’s signed for the Premier League champions.

Man City transfer news

It’s an important month for those at The Etihad. They currently sit outside of the Premier League’s top four and shockingly on course to miss out on Champions League football for the first time under Pep Guardiola. It has undoubtedly been the worst season so far in the Spaniard’s tenure and arguably even as far as his entire managerial career in what highlights the ever-increasing standards that he’s able to hold.

There’s still time for the Citizens to somewhat salvage their season, however, with the January transfer window likely to play a major part. Names such as Martin Zubimendi were mentioned in the build-up to this month – and there’s no doubt that he’d solve their current midfield problem without Rodri – but a fresh name has recently emerged who could yet steal the early headlines.

According to major Egyptian outlet Youm7, Omar Marmoush has already signed for Manchester City from Eintracht Frankfurt in what would be the deal of the January transfer window at this early stage.

Meanwhile, adding fuel to the fire, Mohamed Murad – a supposed spokesman for the Egyptian national team – has congratulated the winger on completing a move worth £50m.

Romano: Man City join race to sign "excellent" £25m defender in January

The Citizens currently have an ageing backline.

ByTom Cunningham Jan 3, 2025

Whether those reports prove to be true remain to be seen, with GiveMeSport’s Ben Jacobs quick to shut down any rumours that Marmoush has already signed for Manchester City, claiming that they hold an interest in the Frankfurt star but are yet to make an official approach and, therefore, nothing is at an advanced stage as of yet.

With that said, it’s fair to say that the transfer season is finally underway as those at The Etihad potentially await their first signing of a crucial window.

"Outstanding" Marmoush could be Sane repeat

Of course, it’s not so long ago that Manchester City benefitted from signing an in-form winger from the Bundesliga in Leroy Sane and now, years later, they can repeat their transfer genius by signing Marmoush.

The Frankfurt man has been one of the best players in Europe so far this season and the Citizens seem to believe that it’s more than just a purple patch, as they eye a deal to sign a player who can ease the responsibility in front of goal on Erling Haaland.

The Egyptian, who’s scored 18 goals and assisted another 12 in 24 games this season, has unsurprisingly found himself at the centre of Dino Topmoller’s praise.

The Frankfurt manager told reporters as relayed by the Bundesliga website: “He’s responsible for producing danger up front, firing in goals and setting up others. He’s very difficult to defend due to his pace and how fast he can run in deep.

“He can also sneak in from close range, take a great touch and play some great passes. He’s in outstanding form at the moment, and he’s feeling comfortable. That’s the key to his success these days. He feels comfortable with this club and the squad, and is thus a key component for us.”

The ACC Women’s tournament in Malaysia and the Kwibuka Women’s Tournament in Rwanda also brought in some upward movement in the T20 rankings. United Arab Emirates’ Esha Oza rose three places to a career-best 33rd rank in the T20 batters list that still has Australians Mooney and Lanning, and Indian teenager Shafali Verma rounding up the top three.Uganda’s Sarah Akiteng went up 14 places to 66th on the T20I bowlers rankings list that features Ecclestone at No. 1, followed by England’s Sarah Glenn and Ismail at Nos. 2 and 3.England’s Sciver remains the world’s No. 1 allrounder with Australia Ellyse Perry behind her. The culmination of the Ireland ODI series did see Marizanne Kapp drop to No. 4 among allrounders with West Indies’ Hayley Matthews now holding on to the No. 3 position.

Tottenham now making regular checks on "fantastic" Son successor

As Tottenham Hotspur look to turn their season around, those in North London are now reportedly making regular checks on a rising star who could go onto replace Heung-min Son.

Tottenham transfer news

In true Tottenham fashion, the Lilywhites entered the first leg of their Carabao Cup semi-final off the back of four games without victory before ending the night as 1-0 winners courtesy of a controversial Lucas Bergvall winner.

Whilst some have been quick to argue that the teenager should have been handed a second yellow card for a late challenge on Andrew Robertson just moments before his goal, there’s no denying that the Swede deserved his moment to remember in North London.

That shock result will at least paper over the cracks for now, but that should not rule out any further January reinforcements at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, given their defensive injuries and lack of quality at times.

Levy hopes to finalise Tottenham signing by the end of the week after talks

The Lilywhites chairman and Spurs’ recruitment team are pushing for the club’s second winter signing.

ByEmilio Galantini Jan 10, 2025

Already, Ange Postecoglou has benefitted from the arrival of Antonin Kinsky, who impressed on his debut in place of Fraser Forster in victory over Liverpool and now the former Celtic boss could welcome yet another talent.

Antonin Kinsky for Spurs.

According to Pete O’Rourke of Football Insider, Tottenham are now making regular checks on Anis Hadj Moussa alongside Liverpool in the race to sign the Feyenoord winger who earned the Man of the Match award in a 3-3 draw against Manchester City earlier this season.

Stealing the show with an excellent display and the first of his side’s three goals to commence a dramatic comeback at The Etihad, Hadj Moussa is certainly one to watch in the coming weeks. Still just 22 years old, if Spurs are looking for a long-term Son replacement then the Algerian may well be their man.

"Fantasic" Hadj Moussa is a rising star

As Son arguably begins to move past his peak at 32 years old, those in North London would be wise to find a replacement sooner rather than later. Without the usual form of the South Korean, Spurs have been handed a glimpse at the frustrating reality that they could find themselves in on a permanent basis this season, rooted to mid-table and on course to miss out on European football.

The arrival of an emerging star in Hadj Moussa could quickly help turn things around, however. The young winger was praised for his “fantastic run of form” by Football Talent Scout Jacek Kulig last month in what may just be a sign of things to come.

With six goals and two assists to his name in all competitions this season, Hadj Moussa is beginning to show all the signs that point towards a player ready to burst into life.

Powell looks at himself as 'a batsman with power', not just a 'big hitter'

He explains how he went after Shakib in the 16th over for 23 runs

Mohammad Isam04-Jul-2022

West Indies were going about smoothly – at 100 for 3 in the 13th over – when Rovman Powell, the disruptor, entered Windsor Park in the second T20I. Walking on his slightly wide gait, he was expected to provide a grand finish to the foundation laid by Brandon King and Nicholas Pooran. The duo had added 74 for the third wicket, but the partnership was broken by Mosaddek Hossain’s wicket-maiden.You couldn’t have faulted the Bangladesh captain Mahmudullah into thinking that a few more good overs would have West Indies on the ropes. Powell, however, knows that his task is to disrupt those plans that captains often have after breaking a big partnership. He stayed quiet in Shakib Al Hasan’s third over, before launching into him in his final over, and powered West Indies to 193 for 5, which proved to be too much for Bangladesh.Powell later said that the 23-run 16th over changed the course of the match significantly. He probably realised that he was batting on a good pitch, before launching into an unbeaten 61 off 28 balls, with six sixes and two fours.”We always sit in our batting meeting to talk about changing momentum and course of the game,” Powell said. “I think that over today from Shakib did that for us. It is very, very important to pick match-ups and bowlers. I reckoned Shakib wasn’t having the best of the days. I decided to go after him. There was five overs of pace in the back-end. The platform was already set by the captain and Brandon, who both played well before I got to the crease. It was just an opportunity for me to advance the scoring. To bat all the overs.”Mahmudullah acknowledged that he was trying to protect Mosaddek from being hit easily through the leg side, which is why he brought on Shakib and Taskin Ahmed for the 16th and 17th overs, which leaked 23 and 17 respectively.”I would have given Mosaddek more overs but there were two right-handers at the crease, and one of them was Rovman Powell. The leg-side boundary was short also. I didn’t want to take the risk. I brought Taskin and Shakib at that stage,” Mahmudullah explained. “Powell was outstanding today. He took the game away from us.”Mosaddek did his part with both bat and ball, but it was limited to the opportunity he got. He was one of the two changes that Bangladesh brought on, with Munim Shahriar out with a back injury. The team management sent Litton Das and Anamul Haque to open, but neither took off.”We found out this morning that Munim has a back problem. Since he didn’t play, we wanted to give Mosaddek a chance. Litton (Das) opened as a result,” Mahmudullah said. “We thought yesterday (July 2) that the wicket would grip for being under cover, that’s why we picked Nasum [Ahmed]. When we batted [in the first game], we saw it was a good wicket. We needed a fast bowler in that case, which is why we picked Taskin. It was a strategic move.”A batter has to be able to bat anywhere in a T20. Litton made runs at No. 4 against West Indies in the last T20 World Cup. Litton is one of our best batsmen regardless of the stats [in T20s]. He is batting really well in Tests and ODIs. He probably hasn’t been able to convert it into T20s but we are still backing him up. We will have to shuffle our opening slot since we aren’t getting consistent batters there, but I think we have to focus on batting as a group, which is our strength.”Powell, meanwhile, said that he doesn’t think of himself as a slogger, but more of a batter these days. He said that it is all part of his growth as a cricketer.”I stopped looking at myself as a big hitter,” he said. “I start looking at myself as a batsman with power. With that comes control, know when to take a single, know when to attack. I think it has served me well so far.”Growth is an important part in any professional sport. From both skill and mental perspective. I think I am growing in each passing year. I want to continue to learn.”Powell said that they understood that their fans are looking forward to bigger things from this group ahead of the T20 World Cup laster this year. West Indies, in a bid to move on from the veterans, have picked a young side against Bangladesh with Powell as the deputy under new captain Pooran.”It is a change in the guard, to be honest. Our legends Chris Gayle, [Dwayne] Bravo and [Kieron] Pollard sit back and let us youngsters come through. We have to take this opportunity to bring smiles back to the people of the Caribbean,” he said.
