As they begin to ponder potential replacements for Mohamed Salah, Liverpool are reportedly weighing up a move to sign a La Liga winger who just stole the show in front of their scouts.
Liverpool transfer news
The contract situations of Virgil van Dijk, Trent Alexander-Arnold and Salah remain the only uncertainties in life under Arne Slot, who has seamlessly replaced Jurgen Klopp.
It looked likely to be mission impossible, but Slot arrived and quickly stamped his mark on the Reds to take them eight points clear at the top of the Premier League table and top of the Champions League, having just defeated European champions Real Madrid.
The former Feyenoord boss will want to take full advantage of the current Liverpool squad whilst he still has it at his full disposal. As things stand, he’s set to lose Van Dijk, Salah and Alexander-Arnold when the summer arrives and their contracts expire. It would be the ultimate disaster for those at Anfield, who are already preparing for the worst.

According to Graeme Bailey for The Boot Room, Liverpool are now weighing up a move to sign Takefusa Kubo after sending scouts to watch the winger score and assist in a 2-1 victory for Real Sociedad against Ajax in midweek. Stealing the show, the Japan international picked the perfect time to impress, with scouts also reportedly in attendance from Aston Villa, Arsenal and Newcastle United.
If Salah does depart in the summer, Kubo certainly represents an interesting option – and an in-demand one, at that. But whether he has the output levels to step in for the Egyptian remains to be seen.
"Amazing" Kubo would have impossible task
To put it simply, there’s not many wingers in world football who are capable of replacing Salah at Liverpool. He is an Anfield legend, and replacing him was never going to be an easy task. Just this season, Salah has scored 12 goals and assisted another 10 in 19 games in all competitions to fire Liverpool towards glory. It’s an output that not many, including Kubo, would struggle to replicate at Anfield.

The Japan international has at least out-performed his expected goals total, indicative of the quality of his finishing, but three goal involvements isn’t impressive enough to suggest that he should be the one to replace Salah as soon as next year.
Praised by analyst Ben Mattinson for his “amazing vision”, Kubo must also begin to create with such an ability, having struggled to get off the mark on the assists front in the current league campaign.
With plenty of unanswered questions about Salah’s future, Liverpool won’t find the solution to their problem at Real Sociedad in the summer.

Duo lead recovery after England manage to dent bright start headed by Brathwaite’s fifty

Two key partnerships at either end of the day pushed West Indies closer to parity with England on the second day of a to-and-fro Test in Antigua. This match has had not so much the twists and turns of a helter-skelter but the slow, loping swings of a pirate ship ride after England’s recovery from 48 for 4 to a respectable 311 built on Jonny Bairstow’s century and then West Indies’ rapid response via Kraigg Brathwaite and John Campbell as the visiting bowlers failed to penetrate with the new ball.West Indies were enjoying all the fun of the fair at 44 without loss by lunch, Brathwaite going along at a run-a-ball, but by tea they were 127 for 4 and England had wrested back some control. Then Nkrumah Bonner and Jason Holder combined for an unbroken 75-run partnership for the fifth wicket that kept their side in the contest.Chris Woakes was one of the bowlers tipped by England’s interim director of cricket, Andrew Strauss, to blossom as a leader of the attack in the controversial absence of long-time spearheads James Anderson and Stuart Broad. But he endured a torrid day, conceding 23 off his first three overs and only finding relief when he snared the wicket of Jermaine Blackwood moments before the second of several brief showers which halted play intermittently through the day, brought about an early tea break. Woakes was struck for 10 fours in as many overs, which cost 51 runs on a benign pitch that for a second straight day offered little to either side. When he rejoined the attack for two more overs – before yet another of the squalls which had dampened England’s efforts with a reverse-swinging ball brought about stumps – Woakes conceded just three more runs.Spinner Jack Leach had bowled five tight overs until Campbell clubbed him for four over extra cover and Brathwaite thundered a six down the ground in Leach’s sixth as West Indies’ opening swelled to 83. But it was Craig Overton who made the initial breakthrough with a short ball down the leg side that tempted Campbell into a pull and brushed the glove on the way through to keeper Ben Foakes to punctuate West Indies’ keen start. As Shamarh Brooks took West Indies into the nineties with consecutive boundaries off Overton, Ben Stokes entered the attack to bowl for the first time since suffering a side strain during the fourth Ashes Test in Sydney.A single off Stokes’ first ball brought up Brathwaite’s fastest Test fifty – off just 62 balls – but Mark Wood, whose pace and reverse swing kept West Indies’ batters on their toes, struck when the West Indies captain chased a wide delivery only to send it directly to Overton at gully. Then Stokes removed Brooks, edging to Joe Root for a simple catch at slip, and suddenly West Indies were wobbling.Foakes put down a difficult chance diving low to his left off Blackwood, who was yet to score when he got an inside edge to a Wood delivery which found the keeper’s glove but failed to stay there as he went to ground.Blackwood, eventually caught in the gully by Overton, was given not out by umpire Joel Wilson amid hearty appeals from the England side, who swiftly reviewed. UltraEdge confirmed Blackwood had indeed laid bat on ball before it struck his thigh pad and looped into the air as West Indies lost a fourth wicket for 44 runs.Leach bowled nine maidens in all – seven of them on the trot in the evening session – in an excellent comeback from a chastening Ashes tour as Holder and Bonner chose their moments well in a sensible, steadying effort. Holder led the way, picking off six fours and a cracking six – over long-on off Root – to close on 43 not out, with Bonner on 34.Earlier, England resumed at 268 for 6 with Bairstow on 109 but, with the ball only six overs old, West Indies had designs on wrapping up the innings quickly. They did so before lunch, but not before Bairstow had reached 140 and taken the England total into elusive territory – past the 300-mark for the first time since August 2021.Jayden Seales came on in the fifth over and struck with his fourth delivery, an excellent short ball that touched Woakes’ glove and sailed through to keeper Joshua Da Silva, ending his seventh-wicket stand with Bairstow at 71. Seales then made it two in three balls when Overton stabbed a length ball towards short leg, where the crouching Bonner took a roundabout catch via his midriff, thighs and eventually hands.Bairstow continued to accumulate, driving Holder with aplomb through cover moments before feeding him a return catch that bobbled out of Holder’s hands. Bairstow was eventually last man out, top-edging Alzarri Joseph high over backward point, where Holder scrambled around and pouched an excellent catch.
Majestic 2022 continues for Bangladesh as bowling effort sets up comfortable chase for batting unit

Taskin Ahmed was a force to reckon with all through the tour•Getty Images
Bangladesh raced to their maiden ODI series win in South Africa, sealing it 2-1 when they beat the home side by nine wickets on Wednesday. The match ended before sunset in Centurion with Taskin Ahmed’s first five-wicket haul in eight years overpowering South Africa and bowling them out for 154. Captain Tamim Iqbal’s unbeaten 87 then ensured Bangladesh’s biggest overseas win in terms of balls remaining. For the record, it was 141.Before this tour, South Africa had never lost to Bangladesh at home in 20 years. They would rue a lot of their decisions in this game, particularly Temba Bavuma choosing to bat on a SuperSport Park pitch that seemed to be quite tacky. They got off to a strong start, but several of their batters were guilty of looking for boundaries and boundaries alone, which led them into making a considerable amount of mistakes.Still, very few would have expected Bangladesh to bowl out South Africa in their backyard in 37 overs in such an important game. The score of 154 is their lowest total against Bangladesh. The 2-1 series loss also dents South Africa’s progress towards automatic qualification to the 2023 World Cup, given they are down in ninth place on the ODI Super League points table.Bangladesh played like the table-toppers they are. They rode on Taskin’s 5 for 35 to put on their strongest bowling performance against a higher-ranked side in overseas conditions. Mehidy Hasan Miraz set them on their way with Quinton de Kock’s wicket in the seventh over at a time when South Africa was motoring along at seven runs an over.de Kock’s wicket sucked the life out of the home side and Taskin used the opening to get the big wickets. He quickly removed Kyle Verreynne, who made a fifty in the second game. Malan, who eventually top scored with 39, also fell to Taskin’s clever thinking. Seeing Malan advance down the wicket, Taskin bowled a quicker, shorter delivery that Malan could only edge. Mushfiqur Rahim took a smart catch moving to his right.South Africa slid further during Taskin’s third spell with Dwaine Pretorius nicking a wide one and danger man David Miller trapped down the leg side. Both wickets came as a result of a string of dot balls that frustrated the batters into playing low-percentage shots.Kagiso Rabada was Taskin’s fifth wicket but the moment was soured slightly when Mushfiqur, who took the edge, sprained his shoulder by throwing the ball up in celebration. The Bangladesh wicketkeeper had to leave the field but he returned not too long after, sporting a rather sheepish smile. South Africa’s innings ended in shambles when Keshav Maharaj, who made a fighting 28, was run after No. 11 Tabraiz Shamsi refused a single off the last ball of the 37th over.If there was any unease about the SuperSport Park pitch, it evaporated as soon as Tamim and Litton Das started to play their shots. Litton though got an early break. He wasn’t even off the mark when Maharaj dropped him at point. The Bangladesh openers batted conservatively for the first seven overs before Tamim struck a pair of boundaries off Lungi Ngidi. When he struck Rabada for four consecutive fours in the tenth over, the fear that Bangladesh might mess up the chase, especially on March 23 (cue the eye-rolling emoji), just vanished.A streaky boundary in the 18th over brought up the 100-run opening stand – Bangladesh’s seventh in an overseas ODI, and the second one against South Africa. Maharaj finally broke the partnership when Litton popped one to cover in the 21st over. Litton’s 48 included eight boundaries, mostly hit through square on the off side. He allowed Tamim to do the bulk of the scoring in their 127-run stand.Tamim, who hadn’t scored an ODI fifty since his century against Zimbabwe in July last year, batted with intent. He cracked 14 fours in his 82-ball 87, and was particularly severe on South Africa’s quicks. He was relentless against Maharaj and Shamsi too. Tamim’s knock embodied Bangladesh’s mindset before and during this ODI series.

O time busca título inédito na competição.
Southampton’s hierarchy are now considering a move for a 4-3-3 attacking manager as their search for Russell Martin’s replacement continues, according to a new report.
Southampton chiefs admire "unbelievable" coach to replace Russell Martin
Southampton already have someone in mind to replace the sacked Englishman.
ByBrett Worthington Dec 16, 2024 Latest on Southampton’s manager search
The Saints decided to sack Martin straight after their 5-0 defeat to Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday evening, a result that leaves them bottom of the table, one win from 16, and nine points adrift of safety. The 38-year-old leaves St. Mary’s Stadium, having won 34 of his 73 matches in charge, as the Saints now begin their search for his replacement.
It emerged on Monday that Sheffield Wednesday boss Danny Rohl is under consideration for the job, as he has admirers at Southampton. The German has previously worked at the club, as he was an assistant manager to Ralph Hasenhuttl a few years back. Southampton are yet to make a formal approach for Rohl, but he could be one to keep an eye on.
Rohl is not the only manager under consideration, as it has also been reported by Sky Sports that two other foreign coaches are also of interest to the Saints, and the Premier League club would not need to pay compensation for either one of them. As things stand, under-21 manager Simon Rusk will take charge of the game against Liverpool in the Carabao Cup on Wednesday, and he is on standby for their match against Fulham on Sunday.
Southampton eyeing move for 4-3-3 attacking manager
According to talkSPORT, Southampton have a long-standing interest in Kasper Hjulmand as they search for a new manager. The 52-year-old has been in the managerial game for a long time but has never managed in England before, but that could soon change.
Hjulmand, who likes to play a 4-3-3 attacking formation, is currently out of work after leaving the Denmark national team in the summer. He held the role since August 2020, during which he led his country to the semi-finals of Euro 2020, and he also guided them to the 2024 World Cup, but he stepped down after this year’s Euro 2024 tournament.
It is reported that Hjulmand has been on Southampton’s radar for a long time, as they have considered hiring the Danish manager before now. The Saints are looking at the overseas free-agent market to replace Martin, and Hjulmand is an option.

Hjulmand, who has won 147 matches as a manager, is understood to be open to the idea of taking on a Premier League job, but Southampton are not alone in being interested in appointing him, as the 52-year-old is also on West Ham’s list of potential replacements for Julen Lopetegui. Apart from managing Denmark, Hjulmand has also managed FC Nordsjælland twice and German side Mainz. Hjulmand would be accepting a very difficult first job in the Premier League should he take the Southampton job, as they already find themselves cut adrift at the bottom, and it is a team lacking any sort of confidence.
Chelsea fell further behind Liverpool in the race for the Premier League title on Sunday after they failed to secure all three points against Everton at Goodison Park.
The Blues are now four points behind the Reds, who have a game in hand, at the top of the table after they beat Tottenham Hotspur 6-3 later in the day.
Enzo Maresca’s men will rue missed chances in their draw with Everton on Sunday, as they failed to make the most of the chances that they created.
The Blues had 75% of the possession on Merseyside and created three ‘big chances’ in the game, but failed to find the back of the net with those opportunities.
Nicolas Jackson missed two of those big chances and has only scored one goal in his last three Premier League outings, missing three ‘big chances’ in that time.
Chelsea wanted to sign another natural centre-forward to come in and compete with the Senegal international in the summer transfer window, but they ultimately failed to bring in another senior option in that position before it slammed shut.
Chelsea's pursuit of Samu Omorodion
One player who was a target for the Blues in the summer was Atletico Madrid striker Samu Omorodion, now going by Samu Aghehowa, and they had agreed a deal for him in August.
Sky Sports reported that Chelsea agreed a £34.5m deal to sign the young attacker from the Spanish giants, before a contractual dispute caused the move to fall through.
The Premier League side did not opt to find a solution to that dispute and the Spain U21 international eventually completed a move to Portuguese giants Porto instead, and his form this season may make the Blues regret their decision.
Aghehowa, 20, has plundered an outstanding 16 goals in 20 appearances in all competitions for his new club, including two goals in one game against Manchester United in the Europa League.
This impressive form comes off the back of his return of eight goals in LaLiga on loan with Alaves from Atletico Madrid in the 2023/24 campaign, which shows that he has taken great strides in his development since making the move to Portugal.

As you can see in the table above, the Spanish marksman has been in prolific form in the Portuguese top-flight, with a staggering 11 goals from just 5.45 xG.
Jackson has missed as many ‘big chances’ in his last three appearances in the Premier League as Aghehowa has in the entire league season so far, which suggests that the Blues may have missed out on having a more clinical centre-forward option to select.
Whilst they have already squandered their chance to bring the former Atletico Madrid starlet to Stamford Bridge, Maresca could find his own version of Omorodion, now Aghehowa, by signing one of the club’s reported targets ahead of the January transfer window.
Chelsea eyeing up Premier League forward
TEAMtalk recently reported that Chelsea want to sign a new number nine to come in and compete with Jackson for the starting spot ahead of the second half of the season.
Transfer Focus
Mega money deals, controversial moves and big-name flops. This is the home of transfer news and opinion across Football FanCast.
The outlet added that Ipswich Town marksman Liam Delap, who only joined the Tractor Boys from Manchester City for £20m in the summer, is high up on their list of potential recruits.
It stated that the club have held talks with the striker’s representatives to discuss a possible move to Stamford Bridge for the England U21 international, whose agents are thinking about his long-term future at the top level amid a relegation battle for his current side.
TEAMtalk revealed that Ipswich are keen to keep hold of their star striker in the January transfer window, but Delap is interested in a move to Chelsea and would be open to the switch if a fee is agreed between the two teams.
It also claimed that Manchester City have a buy-back clause, after selling him in the summer, but that they are unlikely to exercise it in January, which could give the Blues a clear run at the 21-year-old star.
Why Chelsea should sign Liam Delap
Maresca must, now, push the board to secure a deal for the £20m-rated centre-forward because Chelsea could finally land their own version of Aghehowa by swooping for the Englishman.
The Spanish marksman was not an outstanding goalscorer on loan at Alaves, scoring eight league goals, in LaLiga last season, prior to the club’s interest in him, but has now burst into life on the big stage with Porto.
Similarly, Delap is a young striker who has not produced Erling Haaland or Viktor Gyokeres-esque goalscoring levels, but he has shown plenty of promising signs in a struggling Ipswich side.

As you can see in the table above, the Ipswich sensation has been efficient with the chances that have come his way in the Premier League this term, scoring six times from just 4.41 xG in a team that is battling against relegation from the division.
Delap, who was described as a “battering ram” by Opta Analyst on X, also has the ability to create opportunities for himself, as shown in the clip below.
The 21-year-old’s form at youth level for Manchester City suggests that the potential is there for him to explode in a similar way to Aghehowa, if he joins a big team that can consistently put him in good positions to make things happen in the final third.
He scored a staggering 11 goals in 17 games at U18 level and 35 goals in 36 matches for their U21 side, combining for a return of 47 goals in 53 appearances overall.
Delap is now starting to realise some of that potential at first-team level, outperforming his xG in the Premier League, and Chelsea should look to offer him the chance to join a top side that can create chances for him on a consistent basis.

The 21-year-old could, then, be Maresca’s own version of Aghehowa as another supremely talented, and powerful, young centre-forward who could develop into a monster for the Blues in the years to come.
