Clement can ditch Diomande by unleashing Rangers’ "impressive" star

Glasgow Rangers will be looking to carry on where they left off in the Premiership as they face a trip to Rugby Park this afternoon to play Kilmarnock.

A 2-0 win over St Johnstone during their last outing before the international break meant they had won their previous three league games; can the Light Blues make it four in a row today?

Philippe Clement won’t just be aiming for all three points, but also ensure his team deliver a solid performance in the bargain, scoring a few goals in the process.

Against the Saints, several players stood out, yet one failed to truly showcase their abilities – Mohamed Diomande.

Why Mohamed Diomande could be dropped by Clement

The promising midfielder played just the opening 45 minutes against the Saints a couple of weeks ago, coming off at halftime to be replaced with Connor Barron.

During the first half, he lost possession seven times while making zero tackles or interceptions in what was another poor display.

Indeed, the 22-year-old even received a match rating of just 4/10 by Glasgow World for his performance, and it could be time for Clement to drop the Ivorian to the bench against Killie.

With Nico Raskin shining in the same match, it looks like Barron will come back into the starting XI to partner the Belgian, thus seeing Diomande dropped to the bench.

The Rangers star who could replace Diomande

Since joining from Aberdeen, the young midfielder has played a part in every single match so far this term.

The clash against the Saints was just the second match he had not started for the Light Blues, but after Diomande’s lacklustre display, the Scot should be brought back into the team.

Hailed as “very impressive” by Scotland U21 manager Scott Gemmill, Barron has emerged as a key component in Clement’s midfield, showing maturity way beyond his tender years.

In the Premiership this campaign, Barron has succeeded with 91% of his passes, averaged 69.6 touches per game, made tackles and recovered 3.7 balls per game, showcasing his abilities at the heart of the midfield.

These attributes have made him an instant hit with the Ibrox faithful, especially considering they snapped him up for free during the summer.

There is no doubt that he will continue to get better and better as time goes on, especially with exposure to European football on a regular basis.

While he has formed a decent partnership with Diomande, it will be interesting to see him and Raskin slotting into the engine room against Killie.

Chalkboard

Football FanCast's Chalkboard series presents a tactical discussion from around the global game.

The duo have the potential to shine and a solid showing from the pair could mean Diomande has to work even harder to get back into the starting XI.

Three points is all that matters at Rugby Park this afternoon, although a good performance could certainly boost morale among the supporters, no doubt about that.

Left-arm spinner Akeal Hosein has been approved by the ICC’s Event Technical Committee as a replacement for Fabian Allen in West Indies’ squad for the T20 World Cup. Allen had originally been included in the 15-man touring party West Indies had submitted last month, but has had to pull out now due to an ankle injury.Hosein, 28, has played nine ODIs and six T20Is for West Indies since making his international debut at the start of the year. His most recent T20 assignments were with Trinbago Knight Riders in the CPL, where he picked up 13 wickets from 11 matches at an average of 15.92 and had the second-best economy rate among bowlers who had bowled at least 20 overs in the tournament. Hosein was also a net bowler with Kolkata Knight Riders during the UAE leg of the IPL.Related

“I know Fabian was really looking forward to playing in this World Cup, so it is very disappointing that he is forced to miss out,” Roger Harper, West Indies’ chief selector said. “His all-round capabilities will be missed by the team. I would like to wish him a full and speedy recovery and look forward to him being available for squad selection in the near future.”While Hosein was not a part of the original 15, he had joined the squad as a travelling reserve as per the allowance for teams to travel with extra players in view of Covid-19 quarantine requirements. Hence, in turn, the replacement for Hosein in the reserves list will be the uncapped Gudakesh Motie, who will be required to complete the mandatory six days of quarantine and test negative for Covid-19 once he has landed in the UAE, after which he would be allowed to join the West Indies squad. The West Indies selectors have also requested fast bowlers Dominic Drakes and Odean Smith to stay back in the UAE after their association with Kolkata Knight Riders in the recently-concluded IPL there. They will be training with the West Indies squad as net bowlers this week.West Indies began their T20 World Cup preparations with a warm-up game against Pakistan on Monday, which they lost by seven wickets. They will be playing another practice match, against Afghanistan, on Wednesday evening before starting the tournament proper with the clash against England on October 23.

Arsenal hit the jackpot with magnificent Edu signing who’s now worth £90m

Defeats, injuries and suspensions. The last few weeks have been tough for Arsenal, and now, to top it all off, Edu Gaspar has resigned.

The Gunners’ now ex-Sporting Director was one of the leading men, at least publicly, of the club’s resurgence over the last few years.

Edu's most expensive Arsenal signings

Alongside Mikel Arteta, he helped to utterly transform the squad, and while his departure is far from ideal, he leaves with a good track record of signing brilliant players, including one now worth a whopping £90m.

Edu's best signings

Before we get to the player in question, let’s look at some of the Brazilian’s other fantastic signings, including one attacker who technically joined the club a week before the former player was appointed as technical director: Gabriel Martinelli.

Yes, even though the talented winger put pen to paper before Edu joined the club as technical director, it’s said that he played a ‘key role’ in the deal alongside former head of recruitment Francis Cagigao.

Since moving to England, the former Ituano gem has come on leaps and bounds, racking up a tally of 43 goals and 27 assists in 189 games.

While he took a slight step back last season, he’s still worth an enormous amount of money, with Football Transfers valuing him at around €62m, which is £52m.

Another of the former Invincible’s best signings is Martin Odegaard, who initially joined the club on a six-month loan in January 2021 before signing on a permanent deal for around £30m that summer.

Since then, the Norwegian maestro has scored 35 goals and provided 25 assists in 156 appearances, become club captain, established himself as one of the leading midfielders in the Premier League, if not Europe, and seeing his value rise to around the £60m mark.

However, there was another brilliant addition Edu made last summer, one that was more than a little controversial at the time.

Market Movers

Football FanCast's Market Movers series explores the changing landscape of the modern transfer market. How much is your club's star player or biggest flop worth today?

Edu's controversial signing

The player in question is German international Kai Havertz, who joined Arsenal in a £65m deal from cross-city rivals Chelsea.

The transfer raised more than a few eyebrows, with former professional Gabby Agbonlahor labelling the move “very strange” and the “wrong deal” at the time.

Fortunately, the former Aston Villa striker has since been proven very wrong – there’s a shock – as, following a shift in position from central midfield to centre-forward, the former Blues ace has been sensational for the North Londoners.

For example, in his 33 games for the Gunners as a midfielder, he’s scored just six goals, whereas, in 30 appearances as the central striker, he has scored 13 goals and provided eight assists, which is a seriously impressive average of a goal involvement every 1.42 games.

Moreover, the “magnificent” attacker, as dubbed by talent scout Jacek Kulig, hasn’t just been scoring against lower-level opposition either, as he’s found the back of the net against Tottenham Hotspur, Paris Saint-Germain, Chelsea and Newcastle United.

Unsurprisingly, the 25-year-old’s strong form and growing importance within the team have seen his value increase, with Football Transfers now pricing him at around €95m, which converts to about £90m.

Ultimately, Edu’s departure does feel ill-timed, but even so, he has signed a number of incredible players for Arsenal over the years, and there can be no doubt that Havertz is one of them.

Phil Salt, Tom Banton show off their credentials at Abu Dhabi T10

Across a weekend of triple-headers, there has been an exhibition of opening batting on display

Phil Salt scored a 15-ball fifty•Abu Dhabi T10

Across a weekend of triple-headers at the Abu Dhabi T10, there has been an exhibition of opening batting on display. No doubt, the shorter boundaries have helped, especially in a format whereby the risk of losing a wicket is also considerably less.Nevertheless, it has still required an absolute clinic of hitting. On Saturday, Moeen Ali struck 77* off 23 and Kennar Lewis 65* off 32 for the highest partnership in T10 history, racing to a target of 146 without losing a wicket. Then the Bangla Tigers and the Deccan Gladiators chased down scores of 90 and 95 respectively, with almost half their overs remaining. Hazratullah Zazai, with 46* off 16 and Tom Banton, with 46 off 18, the pick of the bunch.Phil Salt missed out on Saturday due to a slight knock, but on Sunday he cashed in once again. The Team Abu Dhabi opener carried on his rich run of form with a devastating knock of 63 from 20 deliveries to confirm their spot in the play-offs. Salt’s half-century in 15 balls trumped Moeen’s 16-ball effort as the fastest of the tournament. If there was any doubt as to whether the injury could have affected him, Salt erased it instantly. In the first over of the chase, he blasted 21 runs off the five deliveries he faced, clipping away his first and last ball from Nuwan Pradeep to the boundary, and smashing two sixes in between. In a tournament with some of the biggest names in world cricket, Salt has been one of the standout players. The game he was injured in and the game he missed subsequently have been the only two games that Team Abu Dhabi have lost this season.Across the seven games he’s played, Salt has scored 237 runs at a strike rate of 237. Only Rovman Powell of the Northern Warriors stands above Salt with 267 runs, albeit he has played a game more.Amongst anyone who has scored at least 100 runs in the Abu Dhabi T10, no batter possesses a better strike rate than Salt. In fact, no one has scored more boundaries than his 17 fours and 21 sixes.Salt may be the star so far, but he insists that continuously working on the mental side of the game is crucial to his development and he has relished the chance to pick the brains of players like Chris Gayle.”Something you do when you’re playing well is that you pick your areas based on instinct” Salt said. “Chris Gayle, I’ve chewed his ear off. He’s got so many tools that I want to add to my game… The most impressive thing and a few guys have it, is that ruthless mentality that someone like Chris has, in the way he takes the game on.”If I can just keep tapping into things like that, the biggest improvements to be made and the lessons to be learnt are from those guys, in terms of how they deal with the game upstairs.”Asked where he sees himself across formats domestically and internationally, Salt said: “It’s something I used to struggle with, really wanting to get on to the next stage. I still do want it just as bad, but I’m very aware now that the only way to get there is to take it day by day by day. I know that’s a really boring answer, but I’ve found that’s the most effective way to improve and not get ahead of myself.”Salt’s tale bears a hint of similarity with that of Banton, whose unbeaten 46 against Delhi Bulls included seven fours and two sixes. Two players brimming with talent, with aspirations to regularly represent their country, yet coming to an understanding with their opportunities and their experiences thus far, that ultimately it is something that will find its way, rather than something that can be chased.Whilst Salt made his international bow in perhaps fortuitous circumstances with three ODIs against Pakistan, Banton was unfortunately part of the England playing group that was forced to isolate before that series.Banton was the breakout star of 2019 and an England call-up followed – he was part of Eoin Morgan’s white-ball set-up for the best part of a year between November 2019 and September 2020 – yet bubble life and quarantine took its toll on him.A blistering 47-ball century in the T20 Blast against Kent served as a reminder of his ability, but a second-ball duck in the final against the same opposition summed up a somewhat disappointing and challenging year in which he was also released by Kolkata Knight Riders.”I had quite a big break. For the whole of October, I didn’t play any cricket – nothing whatsoever. I just lived a social life and saw a lot of friends and family, which I felt was quite important, and now I feel like I’m enjoying it again,” said Banton.”I’d love to get back in the squad but I’m not going to put too much pressure on myself to be there next year. I just want to enjoy my cricket and I think if you’re in that headspace, the rest will take care of itself.”For the pair of them, knowing that Morgan is around, will no doubt add some extra motivation as the Abu Dhabi T10 enters its final week.

Rangers missed out on SPFL titan who’s now worth £6m & better than Propper

Glasgow Rangers manager Philippe Clement is finally beginning to see the fruits of his labour with regard to how his signings from the summer transfer window are performing.

A rebuild was certainly required at Ibrox, with plenty of high earners being sold or released, while a host of young talents arrived in Glasgow, along with a few experienced players.

With a few months of the season now completed, several players have established themselves as key members of Clement’s squad. Connor Barron, for example, has played in every single match this season so far, shining in the heart of the midfield.

Vaclav Cerny is another who has recently put a couple of bad performances behind him to embark on a wonderful run of form over the previous few weeks.

Vaclav Cerny

Indeed, the Czech winger has scored five goals and grabbed three assists in six games and there is no doubt the 27-year-old has cemented his place in the starting XI.

Others haven’t quite lived up to the hype on their arrival, especially a defender signed back in August…

How much Rangers paid for Robin Propper

One area which Clement needed to bolster during the summer was the Light Blues’ defensive options. Connor Goldson was sold after six years in Glasgow, while Leon Balogun was likely to enter his final season at the club.

This saw the Belgian turn to Europe in order to add some reinforcements to his squad, making a move for FC Twente captain Robin Propper.

The Dutchman had played over 200 times in the Eredivisie throughout his career, so it was clear the 31-year-old was experienced enough to take over from Goldson at the heart of the Gers defence.

Clement didn’t exactly have the biggest budget to play with, yet he managed to secure Propper’s signature for a fee in the region of just £1.5m due to a clause in his contract.

On the surface, it appeared to be a smart piece of business, yet after a few months, the centre-back hasn’t quite performed at his best for the Light Blues.

Robin Propper’s Rangers stats

Since making the move to Rangers, Propper has featured 14 times across all competitions, although he has had to settle for a place on the bench in the club’s last two domestic matches.

One that got away

The transfers that nearly happened but never did. This article is part of Football FanCast's One That Got Away series.

The former Twente captain has started three of their four Europa League ties, although his three starts have seen the club concede five goals, including four at home to Lyon in October.

During those games, Propper has won just 48% of his total duels each match, lost possession on average 9.5 times per game and completed just 80% of his passes.

The defender has committed 1.5 fouls per game too, while being dribbled past on 0.8 occasions each match. Is he struggling with his discipline?

Question marks still surround Propper and his performances of late haven’t exactly convinced the Ibrox faithful that he is the right choice to be the leader in the heart of their defence.

Should the Gers have gone all out for a transfer target in 2023 who is now starring in the Champions League? Rather than wait another year for Goldson’s inevitable decline and having to replace him within a matter of weeks.

Auston Trusty was someone Michael Beale wanted, yet he ended up joining Celtic this summer.

Rangers' pursuit of Auston Trusty

Beale faced a similar conundrum to Clement during his first summer transfer window in charge, as a major rebuild was required at Ibrox.

One area which needed some overhauling was the defence, which led the Englishman to add several targets from down south to his list.

Trusty was one name that appeared quite frequently. In May 2023, the then Arsenal starlet was linked with a move to Ibrox, with the club reportedly even submitting a bid in July to secure his signature.

He ended up joining Sheffield United for the 2023/24 campaign, ensuring he got some first-team football in the Premier League.

It looked like the boat had sailed with regard to signing him during the summer, with Celtic eventually securing a deal for the defender, spending £6m to bring him north of the border.

The move looks like an inspired one, that’s for sure.

How Auston Trusty compares to Propper

Hailed by former teammate George Friend for being “incredible”, Trusty has shone for the Parkhead side during his first few months in Scotland, especially in the Champions League.

The American has played in all four of Celtic’s European games so far this season, as they have recorded two wins, a draw and a solitary defeat to Borussia Dortmund.

Across three starts in Europe’s premier club competition, Trusty has succeeded with a staggering 96% of his passes, has been dribbled past just 0.3 times per game, won 4.5 total duels per game – a success rate of 62% – and has also lost possession just 2.3 times per match, showcasing his class on the biggest stage of all.

Compare these stats to Propper’s from the Europa League mentioned earlier, and they are night and day, with Trusty looking like the real deal in Europe.

Signing a competent defender can make all the difference when performing in continental competition.

This is one area in which Clement has struggled, and it is clear the Ibrox side blundered massively by failing to sign Trusty back in 2023.

Of course, the £5m asking price that Arsenal demanded was clearly too much for the club. Instead, they splashed money on players such as Sam Lammers, Cyriel Dessers and Danilo instead.

It remains to be seen what the Gers will do in the January window, especially as Balogun enters the final six months of his contract. With the midfield improving after every game while Cerny and Nedim Bajrami settle in nicely, might another defender be signed?

If they can land someone similar to Trusty, then the second half of the season may see a change in fortunes, no doubt about that.
