Stung by recent losses, BCCI cracks ten-point whip on men's national team

The guidelines come with a warning that “non-compliance” could result not just in disciplinary action, but heavier sanctions including exclusion from domestic cricket and IPL

‘How did we get to this?’ – Manjrekar, Bal question how Indian management ‘let it slip’

The BCCI has sent a ten-point guideline document to India’s contracted men’s players in a bid to “promote discipline, unity and a positive team environment”. It is an unprecedented response to a run of poor Test results and comes with a warning that “non-compliance” could result not just in disciplinary action, but heavier sanctions including exclusion from domestic cricket and the IPL, as well as deductions from central contract retainers. The policy will be effective immediately. The document, accessed by ESPNcricinfo, is titled ‘Policy Document for Team India’. It was sent to the players on Thursday. The document was prepared by the BCCI, building on suggestions made at a review meeting last weekend with key decision-makers in Indian cricket. The review meeting was called by BCCI to assess India’s poor run, starting with the home Test series defeat against New Zealand, where India lost 3-0, followed by the 3-1 loss in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy in Australia. Present at the review meeting were head coach Gautam Gambhir, the Test and ODI captain Rohit Sharma, chairman of selectors Ajit Agarkar, and BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia. Here are some of the key points.Players cannot travel separately to tours/matches/trainingOne of the most significant points discussed at that meeting concerned players not following protocols, which eventually hurt overall atmosphere in the dressing room. Instances were cited of players travelling on their own to series, some players travelling separately to the venue rather than in the team bus, and some players not spending enough time with the group at the team training sessions.Related

Going forward, the BCCI has said, a player will need a “pre-approved” nod from the head coach or head selector to travel separately to and from matches and training sessions. “Separate travel arrangements with families are discouraged to maintain discipline and team cohesion,” the document said. Additionally, the BCCI has said players “are required to stay for the entire duration of scheduled practice sessions and travel together to and from the venue. This rule ensures commitment and fosters a strong work ethic within the team.”Going ahead a player cannot abort a tour or a series even if the match(es) finish earlier than planned. “This ensures unity, fosters team bonding, and avoids disruption to team dynamics.”Families can be around for a maximum two weeks on long toursAnother key point was whether the presence of players’ families, which became more common after the Covid-19 pandemic, on long tours like the recent one in Australia, was distracting and affecting the focus of players. Consequently, the BCCI has said on tours of 45 days or more, players’ immediate families – partners and children (up to 18 years old) – can be with them for no more than 14 days. The families can visit only once and their travel arrangements have to be made by the player in question after a nod from the coach, captain and the BCCI’s general manager, operations.”The BCCI will cover shared accommodation with the player for the visitors’ period. All other expenses are to be borne by the player,” the document said. The BCCI also said that additional costs outside the pre-approved period for the family would be borne by the player.Players must travel together to and from the venue, the BCCI has said in the document•Darrian Traynor/Getty ImagesNo travelling with personal staffThe BCCI has also said that team members need to “restrict” personal staff on tours. This could include, and will not be restricted to, personal managers, chefs, assistants and security. “This ensures that the focus remains on team operations and minimises logistical challenges. – this has to be done away with.”The BCCI has also advised team members to not “engage” in personal commercial shoots on tour or during a series to ensure the “focus remains on cricket and team responsibilities”.Domestic cricket ‘mandatory’ for national selectionThe BCCI has reiterated that it’s “mandatory” for players to make themselves available for all domestic cricket. Not doing that could cost them selection for international assignments as well as their central contracts. This rule was laid down by the BCCI last year when it said it was a “cause for concern” having noticed the trend of some players “prioritising IPL over domestic cricket”.In the fresh guidelines, the BCCI has said: “participation in domestic matches is mandatory for players to remain eligible for selection in the national team and for central contracts, as per BCCI guidelines. This policy ensures that players remain connected to the domestic cricket ecosystem, fostering talent development, maintaining match fitness, and strengthening the overall domestic structure. It also inspires emerging players by providing them opportunities to compete alongside top cricketers, ensuring continuity in talent progression.”The BCCI said it would not entertain any exceptions barring “extraordinary circumstances”, which would need the approval by the selection panel head. The sanctionsThe BCCI has stressed that players need to “adhere strictly” to the guidelines and if there is any “non-compliance”, there will be “disciplinary action” including sanctions.”The BCCI reserves the right to take disciplinary action against a player which may include sanction against the concerned player for participating in all BCCI conducted tournaments including the Indian Premier League and deduction from retainer amount/match fees under BCCI player contract.”Implementing such measures, the BCCI said, “ensures accountability and reinforces the importance of adhering to established policies and prioritising Indian cricket.”

Offer sent: Bologna now holding meeting about selling top Sunderland target

After submitting their offer, Sunderland could now receive a major boost in pursuit of their late transfer target amid reports that the selling club are now set to discuss his departure.

Sunderland still chasing late targets

It’s already been a hectic summer for all involved at the Stadium of Light. As many as 12 fresh faces have arrived to join up with Regis Le Bris’ side, who are vying for survival at the first time of asking in the Premier League. But Sunderland aren’t done there. After suffering defeat at the hands of Burnley, a defensive reinforcement is still on the cards.

After losing Daniel Ballard to a groin injury against Burnley, it’s not a surprise that Sunderland have turned straight to the transfer market. Whilst the extent of his injury is yet to be revealed, the Black Cats will be keen to ensure that the drop-off in quality without their defensive leader isn’t so alarming.

As such, Chelsea’s Axel Disasi has reportedly emerged on their radar. The centre-back is part of the Stamford Bridge ‘bomb squad’ and doesn’t even have a place in Enzo Maresca’s dressing room as he continues to train away from the first-team. In desperate need of a move away, Sunderland would be an ideal option.

They’re not the only side interested, however. Battling alongside Sunderland, Bournemouth have also set their sights on the central defender and can offer a loan with an option to buy. Sunderland, of course, are not in a position to put a loan deal together, having already welcomed Marc Guiu on a temporary basis from the London club.

That said, Disasi is not the only name that those in Wearside have in mind. Reports are also suggesting that they’ve already tabled an offer to sign an alternative target.

Bologna now discussing Lucumi sale

According to reports in Italy, as relayed by Sport Witness, Bologna are now set to discuss the sale of Jhon Lucumi in a potential boost for Sunderland with their €30m (£26m) offer still on the table.

Although Bologna’s CEO, Claudio Fenucci, told reporters that the “timeframe for the offer didn’t materialise”, Sunderland have now been handed a glimmer of hope by reports claiming that the Italian club are already attempting to welcome Union Berlin’s Diogo Leite to replace Lucumi.

What’s more, the defender’s agent has been far from private when it comes to detailing his client’s desire to leave the club, saying via Fabrizio Romano: “Last year we were asked to stay and we did so with great availability. This year, however, since the beginning of the season, the message has always been clear on both sides: if the right offer had arrived, Jhon would have had the possibility of a transfer.”

With less than a week to go until the window slams shut, Sunderland’s offer remains on the table and Lucumi’s stance seemingly remains the same. But whether the defender ends the summer as a Premier League player still remains to be seen.

Earns more than Mbeumo & Cunha: Amorim must sell Man Utd star after Onana

Manchester United’s struggles over the last couple of years have been evident for all to see, with pressure subsequently mounting onto the shoulders of manager Ruben Amorim.

He was brought into the club back in November 2024 to try and overturn the dismal slump under Erik ten Hag, but it’s safe to say his spell at Old Trafford has been disappointing to date.

The 40-year-old has only achieved a win percentage of 39%, subsequently losing 19 of the 46 games he’s taken charge of – with one of the most recent being simply unforgivable.

His Red Devils side lost on penalties to League Two side Grimsby Town in the second round of the Carabao Cup, a result which has undoubtedly fuelled speculation around his future in the role.

However, his decision-making in key moments could prove to be his demise in the Premier League, often calling upon players who have constantly fallen way below the levels the fanbase expects from a United player.

Andre Onana’s decline at Manchester United

When David de Gea was released in the summer of 2023, United decided to fork out a fee in the region of £47m for the signature of goalkeeper Andre Onana – with many supporters hoping he would be able to be the club’s number one for many years.

However, two years on, his move to Old Trafford has been nothing short of a disaster, registering nine errors leading to goals, with many more questionable moments unfolding on the pitch.

Despite his lack of form in 2024/25, Amorim decided to start the Cameroonian against Grimsby – a decision that massively backfired, as he contributed to the host’s two goals at Blundell Park.

The penalty shootout gave the 29-year-old an opportunity at redemption, but he only managed one save from 13 penalties, often parrying the ball into the back of the net.

Such a performance has led to calls from the fanbase for the player to be sold – with a change between the sticks needed if the club are to progress in the near future.

The deadline day arrival of Senne Lammens will only push Onana closer to the exit door, with another first-team member needing to join him in leaving the club in the near future.

Senne Lammens for Royal Antwerp.

Not just Onana: Man Utd big earner needs to go

Spending big in the transfer market doesn’t equal success, as seen by United over the last couple of years, with the hierarchy spending around £800m on new additions since the summer of 2022.

Onana was just one of those additions, with Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo the last duo to try and transform the club’s fortunes at Old Trafford.

The pair arrived from Wolverhampton Wanderers and Brentford respectively, with their transfers setting the club back around £133.5m, including potential add-ons.

Their combined tally of 35 league goals in 2024/25 has given the fanbase a reason to be positive, but other cutbacks need to be made in other areas of the club are to take the next step in their quest to return to their former glory.

Manchester United's Matheus Cunha

Harry Maguire is another player who cost big money, joining in a £80m deal from Leicester City back in the summer of 2019 – a fee that remains the most expensive ever paid for a defender.

While the England international has racked up over 250 appearances for the Red Devils, he’s not had the impact many fans would’ve anticipated upon his move from the Foxes.

He’s come into question of the fanbase in recent times, just like Onana, with the 32-year-old falling down Amorim’s pecking order over the last few weeks.

Maguire hasn’t started a single league game so far this campaign, featuring for a total of just 13 minutes off the substitutes bench – with his extortionate wage no longer reflecting his importance to the side.

The centre-back is still being paid a staggering £190k-per-week, according to Capology, a figure that is higher than new additions Cunha and Mbeumo, who earn £180k and £150k-per-week respectively.

At 32, he’s undoubtedly coming to the back end of his professional career, with the hierarchy needing to clear the Englishman off the wage bill to fund moves for fresh blood at Old Trafford.

It’s clear he and Onana aren’t at the level required for Premier League success, which could see another clear-out of the squad take place in the next couple of transfer windows.

Barcelona tie teenage midfielder Marc Bernal down to new contract with massive release clause in wake of ACL injury recovery

Barcelona have officially renewed the contract of teenage midfielder Marc Bernal until 2029, inserting a huge €500 million release clause. The youth academy product only just returned from a serious ACL injury but is still viewed as a cornerstone of the club’s future. His renewal signals Barca’s intent to protect their brightest young stars amid growing European interest.

Barcelona announce long-term Bernal extension until 2029

Barcelona confirmed on Monday that Bernal has signed a contract extension until June 2029, with a staggering €500m (£420m/$545m) release clause included. The deal was signed in the presence of president Joan Laporta, vice president Rafael Yuste, and sporting director Deco. Despite missing over a year through injury, Bernal remains one of the most highly-rated La Masia graduates.

The club’s official statement read: "FC Barcelona and the player Marc Bernal have reached an agreement for the extension of the player's contract until June 2029. The signing took place on Monday morning at the Club Offices with the Barça president Joan Laporta, first vice president Rafael Yuste and director of the Football Area, Deco, all present."

AdvertisementWhy Barca are betting big on Bernal

The Catalan giants see Bernal as part of their long-term midfield rebuild under Hansi Flick. Alongside fellow academy products like Lamine Yamal, Fermin Lopez, Gavi and Pau Cubarsi, the midfielder represents the next wave of homegrown stars being tied down to fend off interest from top European clubs. His €500m clause mirrors Barca’s approach of safeguarding talent while nurturing them into first-team roles.

A comeback story after injury struggles for Bernal

The Spaniard suffered a devastating ACL injury in August 2024, sidelining him for over a year. He returned earlier this month in a La Liga clash against Valencia, coming off the bench and even grabbing an assist in a 6-0 win. Barcelona were quick to reassure him of their faith, offering an improved deal while he was still in recovery, a gesture underlining the club’s confidence in his potential.

For now, Barca will carefully manage Bernal’s minutes as he regains fitness, but his long-term role under Flick is expected to grow. The 18-year-old is tipped to become a key part of Barcelona’s midfield rotation, with the club hopeful he can emulate the rise of Yamal and Cubarsi. If he avoids further setbacks, Bernal could be central to both Barca’s future and Spain’s national setup.

Smith has committed to play for Welsh Fire in the Hundred at the same time, and his 50-over retirement should enable him to play more franchise cricket as he approaches the end of his career.

Better signing than Balikwisha: £5m star is late leading target for Celtic

Celtic have little more than 24 hours left to do any remaining transfer business that they feel they need to do to set them up for the first half of the 2025/26 campaign.

The Scottish Premiership giants agreed a £7m fee with Swansea City to allow Adam Idah to move on from the club, just 12 months after signing him from Norwich City, but have put the brakes on that transfer for now.

They are only willing to allow that switch to go through before the deadline if a replacement is brought through the door to replace the Ireland international.

Talks are said to be ongoing over a move for Anderlecht centre-forward Kasper Dolberg, and his arrival at Parkhead would mean that Idah can complete a transfer to Wales.

Celtic have managed to bring in one attacker in the final days of the window, though, as Michel-Ange Balikwisha has arrived from Royal Antwerp in a £5m move.

The Premiership champions chased the Belgian forward throughout the summer transfer window and have finally landed their man on a permanent deal.

What Michel-Ange Balikwisha can bring to Celtic

In Celtic’s official announcement of the signing, Brendan Rodgers explained that one of Balikwisha’s strengths is that he can play on both flanks.

The manager told the club’s website: “He is a really talented, exciting player and with a good level of experience at a high level already, so he will be an important player for us moving forward. He loves to attack and can play both sides of the pitch so we are sure he will give the team some great options.”

Rodgers’ claim that Balikwisha is an exciting player is one that is also backed up by his statistics for Royal Antwerp in the last two seasons in the Pro League.

The 24-year-old attacker scored four goals and provided three assists in 12 starts last term, and managed seven goals and five assists in 25 starts in the 2023/24 campaign, per Sofascore.

This shows that he is a winger who has the potential to deliver goals and assists in almost equal measure for the Scottish giants if he can quickly adapt to football in the Premiership.

As you can see in the table above, though, there may be some concerns over his injury record, as he has missed at least ten matches through injury in each of the last four seasons.

This means that the biggest hurdle standing in the way of Balikwisha being a success at Parkhead could be his availability, as consistent injury problems could disrupt his time in Glasgow.

Michel-Ange Balikwisha for Royal Antwerp.

With this in mind, one of the players the club are currently looking to bring in before the summer transfer window closes could be an even better signing.

£5m star is a leading target for Celtic

Despite signing Balikwisha from Royal Antwerp for £5m, the Scottish giants are still looking to add more quality to their squad in the attacking midfield positions.

Transfer Focus

Mega money deals, controversial moves and big-name flops. This is the home of transfer news and opinion across Football FanCast.

According to The Celtic Star, Rodgers wants the club to either sign two new strikers and another winger or two new wingers and another striker before the deadline.

The report claims that Go Ahead Eagles star Jakob Breum has emerged as one of the leading contenders to arrive at Parkhead before the window slams shut on Monday.

It adds that it could take a fee of at least £5m to secure the Denmark U21 international’s signature in a last-gasp move for the star, but they have yet to reach an agreement with the Eredivisie outfit.

Celtic must, now, move quickly to agree a deal with Go Ahead Eagles to ensure that they do not leave it too late to get a transfer over the line on deadline day.

Why Breum could be a better signing than Balikwisha

The Hoops could land an even better signing than their new winger from Royal Antwerp by pushing through with a swoop for the Eredivisie talent, because of his injury record and is quality on the pitch.

The Danish maestro has only missed 11 games through injury, suffering just one, in his entire career to date, per Transfermarkt. This suggests that he may be more reliable than Balikwisha when it comes to being available week-in-week-out.

Availability is the best ability because, simply, a player cannot make a difference on the pitch if they are not fit enough to play, which is why the Go Ahead Eagles star may have more to offer to Celtic by being available more often than the Belgian winger.

Breum, who was described as an “exciting” talent by Sport Republic video scout RDF Tactics, is also an impressive attacking force who could provide plenty of quality in the final third, as either an attacking midfielder or as a right-sided forward.

As you can see in the table above, the Denmark U21 international caught the eye in the Eredivisie last season with his contributions as both a goalscorer and a creator.

Breum’s haul of 15 goal contributions in the Dutch top-flight last term shows that he can make an impact in the final third on a consistent basis, and that he could offer even more than Balikwisha, who has never managed more than 12 goal contributions in a league season, per Sofascore.

These statistics suggest that the Danish whiz could win more points for the Hoops, whether that is in the Premiership or the league phase of the Europa League, because he may provide more game-changing goal contributions from the attacking midfield slots.

Better than Saracchi: Celtic in race to sign "technically gifted" £9m star

As Celtic search for a new left-back before the deadline, the Hoops should forget about Marcelo Saracchi and sign a “technically gifted” star instead.

1 ByBen Gray Aug 29, 2025

Therefore, overall, Breum could be an even better signing for Celtic than Balikwisha as a younger talent who has shown more in front of goal and been more reliable with his fitness in recent seasons.

David Lloyd stands down as Derbyshire captain

Allrounder opts to focus on his own game after disappointing first season leading red-ball team

ESPNcricinfo staff06-Mar-2025Derbyshire allrounder David Lloyd has stood down as club captain ahead of the 2025 season. Lloyd, who joined from Glamorgan in 2023, led the club in the County Championship last year, but could not prevent Derbyshire from receiving the wooden spoon after finishing bottom of Division Two.In his first full summer at the club, Lloyd, 32, averaged 23.47 with the bat and 31.00 with the ball in the Championship, and has opted to stand down from the captaincy in search of better returns.”David has given his all to the captaincy and he has been a fantastic leader for us, but the mental pressures of trying to lead a team, especially while you are trying to rediscover your own form, coupled with having a young family mean it’s best for all parties if we take some of that weight off his shoulders,” Derbyshire’s head of cricket, Mickey Arthur, said.”David has been honest with me, he is determined to contribute to the team and his experience and leadership will still be invaluable for us, both on the field and in the dressing room, and I’m looking forward to seeing the best of him this summer.”Derbyshire underwent a revamp ahead of the 2024 season, with Lloyd taking the captaincy after the departure of Leus du Plooy and several new players coming in. But progress was limited – having been winless in 2023, they managed one victory to go with six defeats and a last-placed finish. That one win, however, did see them end a barren five-year run in Championship cricket at their Derby headquarters.Lloyd said: “This has not been an easy decision for me, but I have had a good group of friends, family and team-mates to confide in over this winter, and I believe this is what will allow me to focus on my game.”It has been an honour for me to captain Derbyshire, and I’m now looking forward to playing with less pressure on my shoulders, continuing to learn from the experience of Mickey and our coaching team, and showing our members and supporters what I can do.”We want to get back to competing across all formats, I am excited to play my part and hopefully helping our new club captain any way I can.”

Max Holden century leads Middlesex fightback

Tom Bailey’s superb opening salvo had home side struggling at 7 for 3

ECB Reporters Network supported by Rothesay06-Apr-2025Middlesex 260 and 288 for 6 (Holden 135*, Geddes 74, Bailey 3-47) lead Lancashire 359 (Harris 138, Jennings 55, Jones 40) by 186 runsMax Holden’s sixth first-class hundred led a Middlesex fightback on day three at Lord’s to set up the prospect of an exciting finish against Division Two title favourites Lancashire. The Cambridge-born left-hander followed up his half-century of the first innings with an unbeaten 135 to rescue his side from the havoc of 7 for 3 in the wake of Tom Bailey’s superb three-wicket opening salvo.Holden shared stands of 106 with Ryan Higgins (43) and 163 with debutante Ben Geddes (74) as the hosts reached 288 for 6 at stumps.Bailey couldn’t add to his pre-lunch heroics, but late wickets with the second new ball gave the visitors the edge once more ahead of day four. All this unfolded after Lancashire added just six to their overnight first-innings score to be bowled out for 359, Saturday’s centurion Marcus Harris last to go for 138, Zafar Gohar finishing with 4 for 79.It was only two seasons ago Middlesex found themselves 4 for 4 in the first game of the season with the top four all dismissed without scoring and while this wasn’t quite as calamitous, Bailey’s new-ball spell still caused much scrambling on of pads in the home dressing-room.Nathan Fernandes looked nervous from the get-go and Bailey soon lured him into fencing at one he should have left alone, allowing wicketkeeper Matty Hurst to gobble up the chance. If Fernandes was culpable, then Sam Robson was undone by a super piece of bowling, Bailey squaring up the former England opener and rapping him on the pad. Any hope it would be considered too high was quickly dashed as umpire Surendiran Shanmugan sent him on his way.Two balls later, 7 for 2 became 7 for 3 as Leus du Ploy slashed wildly at a ball around fifth stump giving Hurst his second catch in a matter of minutes. Bailey had taken 3 for 2 in 15 balls, leaving the hosts staring at the prospect of defeat inside three days.Calm heads were required and for the second time in the match it was former England Lions batter Holden who was first to raise his hand, employing a mix of studious defence with drives caressed through the covers and savage square cuts.Six such boundaries carried him past 50 and there would be seven more on the way to three figures, reached in style with an on-drive back past the stumps to the pavilion rope.Fightbacks of course need co-conspirators and not for the first time, Ryan Higgins was first to come to the left-hander’s assistance. A classy pull shot in front of square got the allrounder moving and he then dispatched Luke Wells deliveries to the fence twice in the same over.Bailey returned immediately after lunch as a game of patience unfolded, the two batters resisting his second surge and a miserly spell from Will Williams to raise the 100 partnership. It required a jaffer from George Balderson to castle Higgins with the hosts 14 in front, but Geddes, a young player hailed this week by Richard Johnson as a player with a ‘high ceiling’, came in to take the baton and after a shaky start he too blossomed, an off-drive through midwicket the pick of his early boundaries.By tea the lead had swollen to 72 and the pair showed greater intent after the resumption to move the stand to 100 and beyond.Geddes reached his half-century with five fours, before falling to the second new ball, though replays suggested he hadn’t made contact with the delivery which found its way to Hurst’s gloves.Nightwatcher Blake Cullen also perished before stumps, but Holden remains to try and steer Middlesex to a defendable total on day four.

Huescas, one of Mexico’s brightest young players and the country’s only representative in this season’s Champions League, faces the possibility of missing the 2026 World Cup after Copenhagen revealed the full extent of his injury.

Huescas was enjoying the best moment of his career. Since leaving Cruz Azul for Denmark in 2024, he had quickly become a standout performer for Copenhagen and a key figure in Javier Aguirre’s plans with the Mexican national team. Now, his future is clouded by uncertainty as El Tri lose a vital option on the right flank.

Huescas now faces the harsh reality that an ACL tear typically requires between six and nine months of recovery. That timeline would make it almost impossible for him to be fit for the World Cup opener on June 11.

It completely re-routes what had been shaping up to be a breakout phase of his young career, just as he had cemented his place with El Tri.

With Huescas sidelined, the door could open for Jorge Sánchez or Julián Araujo to step in and claim a spot on Mexico’s right flank as the World Cup approaches.

Man Utd tipped to join race for Premier League star who's an "absolute gem"

Manchester United could now join the race to sign a Premier League player who has been described as an “absolute gem” of a footballer.

Amorim backed by former Man Utd player

It’s fair to say that Ruben Amorim is feeling the heat as Red Devils manager, not least after the humiliating EFL Cup penalty shootout defeat to Grimsby Town last month.

Despite this, former United defender Phil Jones has shown his support for the Portuguese, suggesting he still believes he is the right man for the job.

“I’ll tell you where I’m at with Amorim… I like him. I like the transparency he has between the players and the fans – and I think that’s certainly been something we’ve missed over the last few years. I think certain previous managers have missed a trick, because if you’re transparent with this fanbase, they will back you all the way; they will sing your name and cheer for you.

“Look, he came in straight away and said things were going to get worse before they got better, and that’s been the case. I like his authenticity. He is who he is, and he’ll face criticism for it. But he’s not going to change for anyone. He owns it. He inherited a squad which wasn’t his, halfway through a season, who were used to playing a different way. Let’s just give him time.”

United are by no means the finished article, and they still need to strengthen certain areas of the squad after a mixed summer transfer window.

Man Utd could join race for Premier League hero

Speaking to The Boot Room, journalist Graeme Bailey claimed that Manchester United could join the race to sign Marc Guehi from Crystal Palace, should they secure Champions League football this season.

“Liverpool will be back for him, of course. But they know they’ll be one of many clubs making an offer. Now, with Guehi, it resets everything. Everyone starts at a blank slate. Guehi’s people are aware of the clubs who have already told them they’ll be making an offer next summer – clubs like Barcelona, Bayern Munich, Real Madrid.

“In England, let’s see where Tottenham finish – they love him as a player. Would Chelsea come into the equation on a free transfer? Of course, they would. Man United? If they finish in the top four, of course they do.”

Guehi missed out on joining Liverpool on deadline day, despite even passing a medical, so for United to suddenly swoop in and sign him next summer would be significant, pipping their rivals to his signature in the process.

The 25-year-old is a fantastic player who has grown into a key starter for England in the coming years, with coach Michael Beale hailing him during his time working with him at Chelsea as a youngster.

“He shows a huge amount of confidence to play on the left side and his technical upbringing from Chelsea means he can use his left foot, albeit he is dominant on his right foot. When you see the teams line up, he’s not the biggest centre-back but he has a huge leap. Quietly people are realising we have an absolute gem in him.”

Guehi is out of contract at Palace in 2026, and his anger at not joining Liverpool means he is highly unlikely to sign an extension, so United should be all in on signing him on a free transfer.

That said, Champions League football will surely be needed for the Red Devils to get their man, and in truth, their biggest rivals still feel like the favourites to sign him.
