Williamson and Jamieson to miss Bangladesh T20Is on 'medical advice'

Rachin Ravindra and Jacob Duffy have been called up as replacements, and Mitchell Santner will stand in as captain

ESPNcricinfo staff22-Dec-2023Kane Williamson, the designated captain, and Kyle Jamieson have been withdrawn from New Zealand’s T20I squad to take on Bangladesh at home later this month. Mitchell Santner, who has led both the New Zealand white-ball sides in the past, will be captain in Williamson’s absence.Rachin Ravindra and Jacob Duffy have been called up as replacements, with NZC saying the decision on Williamson and Jamieson was made following “medical advice and consideration of the team’s upcoming schedule, with a focus on this summer’s Test series against South Africa and Australia”.Williamson, who missed seven months of competitive cricket earlier this year after sustaining a right knee injury during the IPL, “will undergo a period of knee rehabilitation and strengthening following his recent return to play in India and Bangladesh,” NZC said.As for Jamieson, “his hamstring injury was best served by a period of targeted rehabilitation leading into February’s Test Series against South Africa”. He will sit out the series of three T20Is against Bangladesh as well as the January T20I series against Pakistan. He was earlier withdrawn from the ODI squad for the ongoing series against Bangladesh, which New Zealand are leading 2-0.

“We want both Kane and Kyle to be in the best possible place leading into the next block of Test cricket against South Africa and Australia,” Gary Stead, the New Zealand coach, said in a statement. “Based on discussions with the medical staff and the players, it was decided a period of rehabilitation and conditioning was the best option for both of them.”Jacob is an experienced T20 cricketer, and always brings a lot when he is part of the BlackCaps environment. Alexander Isak to Liverpool is OFF! Newcastle's Saudi owners make intervention to block sale of star striker despite Reds' willingness to lodge record £130m bid

Liverpool’s hopes of signing Alexander Isak have reportedly been dashed after Newcastle’s Saudi ownership stepped in to block any potential sale — even if the striker pushes for a move. The Reds were prepared to table a British-record £130 million ($175m) offer, but the Magpies have made it clear the Swedish star is not for sale at any price this summer.

Newcastle owners block Isak sale despite £130m Liverpool offerMagpies to make him highest-paid player in club historyReds shift focus to Hugo Ekitike after failed Isak pursuitFollow GOAL on WhatsApp! 🟢📱WHAT HAPPENED?

Liverpool made a bold approach for Alexander Isak, hoping to land him with a record-breaking £130m bid. However, Newcastle’s Saudi owners have categorically refused to sell their top scorer, as per The Sun, regardless of the offer or the player’s interest. Talks between the clubs have not progressed, and the Magpies are now preparing a bumper new contract for the Swede.

Isak scored 27 goals last season and has become a cornerstone of Eddie Howe’s Newcastle project. Despite frustrations over a delayed pay rise, the club now plans to make him their highest-paid player in history. Chairman Yasir Al-Rumayyan is firmly backing Howe and aiming to build a squad capable of sustained success, not sell its crown jewels.

Liverpool’s rejection has prompted the Reds to pivot towards Hugo Ekitike, a target they’ve now hijacked from Newcastle’s radar. Meanwhile, Isak’s camp remain wary due to broken promises by former directors, which originally paused his contract extension talks. Still, Newcastle are pushing forward with a deal worth over £200,000 a week to resolve any lingering tension.

Newcastle will now focus on securing Isak’s long-term commitment with a lucrative new deal. Liverpool, meanwhile, are likely to finalise talks with Ekitike’s camp as an alternative striking option. For Isak, all eyes are on whether he’ll accept the Magpies’ renewed terms — or push back again later this summer.

Athapaththu's 195* trumps Wolvaardt's 184* in epic SL chase

Sri Lanka completed highest successful run-chase of 302 in women’s ODIs and levelled the series 1-1

Firdose Moonda17-Apr-2024Sri Lanka completed the highest successful chase in women’s ODIs, against South Africa, and the only one over 300 thanks to a sensational 195* from their captain Chamari Athapaththu. She finished with her career-best ODI score and the third-highest individual score by a batter in women’s ODIs to help Sri Lanka level the series 1-1.In a battle of the captains, Athapaththu’s knock trumped Laura Wolvaardt’s 184* – the highest by a South African player and her fourth hundred since being named captain last September. She led South Africa to their fifth-highest ODI score and highest against Sri Lanka but it was not enough.Athapaththu and Nilakshika de Silva shared in a 179-run fifth-wicket partnership – the second-highest stand for the fifth-wicket or lower in the women’s game – and rescued Sri Lanka from 126 for 4 in the 21st over. Crucially, Sri Lanka gained two points on the Women’s Championship table, which determines qualification for the 2025 ODI World Cup. They move up to seventh spot and remain in the race for automatic entry to India next year – the top five teams along with the hosts will go through – with six matches left to play.Related

Powerplay: Wolvaardt's reinvention in first season as skipper

Athapaththu not retiring yet, will play T20 World Cup qualifiers from late April

Sri Lanka leave South Africa after their most successful visit to these shores. Along with a squared ODI series, they won the T20I series 2-1 – their first series win over South Africa. In the immediate aftermath of that win, Athapaththu hinted at international retirement but the form she displayed in the third ODI in Potchefstroom suggested she is nowhere near ready to put the bat down.Sri Lanka had never scored 300 in an ODI before, much less chased that much but on a flat pitch with a fast outfield, Athapaththu fancied their chances. She hit the ball cleanly, was brutal straight down the ground and quick between the wickets and that was after opening the bowling and delivering a full quota of ten overs with a return of 1 for 59.She was the senior partner in her opening stand with 18-year-old Vishmi Gunaratne and took the fight to South Africa. They put on 90 inside 16 overs before Gunaratne was given out lbw to Delmi Tucker, who was also involved in the second wicket. She took a good catch at backward point to dismiss Prasadani Weerakkody off Nadine de Klerk’s bowling and South Africa sensed an opportunity to make inroads into Sri Lanka’s middle order.Wolvaardt brought back Ayabonga Khaka, playing in her 100th ODI, and she had immediate success. She had Hansima Karunaratne caught behind, chasing a wide one, off the first ball of her fourth over and Kavisha Dilhari caught behind down the leg side two balls later. Sinalo Jafta took both catches but the second one did her dirty as her shoulder hit the ground awkwardly and she had to leave the field. Uncapped 16-year-old Karabo Meso replaced her behind the stumps and thought she had wicket off De Silva’s first ball but umpire Jacqueline Williams was unmoved. Sri Lanka were 126 for 4 in the 21st over and Athapaththu was still there.Laura Wolvaardt’s 184 was in vain•Gallo ImagesThe Sri Lankan captain was unfazed by the mini-collapse and simply kept batting. She brought up a hundred off 78 balls in the 26th over and kept Sri Lanka on track as South Africa unraveled. Their fielding was sloppy; overthrows were offered aplenty and importantly, Athapaththu was dropped on 128 by Sune Luus in deep mid-wicket off Nonkululeko Mlaba in the 32nd over. At the time, Sri Lanka still needed 106 runs from 18.3 overs.Athapaththu made the most of her let-off and continued to breeze her way through the chase with Silva providing strong support and South Africa losing their way. They sent down 19 wides and two no-balls in total and Sri Lanka cashed in. Athapaththu and de Silva combined boundary hitting with exceptional strike rotation and reached the target with five-and-half-overs – 33 balls – to spare to share the trophyWolvaardt’s second successive ton in vainEarlier, South Africa would have been confident of claiming it after Wolvaardt scored her fastest – off 100 balls – and second successive hundred in the series against Sri Lanka. In the absence of Tazmin Brits – who underwent surgery on a meniscus tear in her left knee today – Wolvaardt has embraced the responsibility of both anchoring and accelerating the innings. She was the dominant partner in the opening partnership of 116 with Lara Goodall and scored 83 off 74 balls, while Goodall, playing in her 50th ODI, contributed 31 off 55.South Africa’s innings stuttered through the middle period as the Sri Lankan spinners squeezed them. Goodall, Tucker and Luus were dismissed for eight runs in the space of 18 balls, but recovered thanks to their most reliable allrounder Marizanne Kapp. She and Wolvaardt shared a run-a-ball partnership of 63, and Kapp was at the other end when Wolvaardt reached her hundred before she was run-out at the end of the 35th over. South Africa were 187 for 4 at the time and the arrival of de Klerk brought an increased intensity.De Klerk and Wolvaardt put on 92 in 80 balls for the sixth wicket, with de Klerk just establishing herself as a finisher, it was Wolvaardt who was aggressive in the stand. She hit her next 84 runs in 47 balls and South Africa scored 114 runs in their last 15 overs, at 7.6 runs an over, which seemed to set them up well until Athapaththu had the final say.

Hayley Matthews dominates with bat and ball as WI go 2-0 up

She took three wickets and scored 58 off 43 to quell Pakistan’s challenge in Karachi

Danyal Rasool28-Apr-2024Another dominant all-round performance from Hayley Matthews helped West Indies women take a 2-0 series lead against Pakistan in Karachi. Muneeba Ali had scored a half-century earlier in the evening, but Matthews registered figures of 3 for 25 to stall Pakistan’s innings and keep them to a below-par total. She then doubled as match-winner with the bat, too, her 58 off 43 all but ensuring the visitors’ chase would be a straightforward one, and that Pakistan would continue to remain winless.Related

1st T20I – Ramharack stars as West Indies clinch thriller

Having missed out on chasing a near-identical score in the first T20I, Pakistan opted to bat first this time, only to see their innings fall into early peril. Gull Feroza struggled to get the ball off the square in a tortuous 29-ball 14 with Chinelle Henry in particular causing her considerable trouble. She struck to remove Sidra Ameen early, with the pressure of run-scoring falling onto Muneeba, and as a result, Pakistan limped to a mere 33 in the powerplay.Muneeba injected some impetus into the innings, but her 47-ball 55 was the only Pakistan effort that went at better than a run a ball. An encouraging third-wicket partnership with Nida Dar was felled at a crucial moment in the 16th over, just as Pakistan may have felt they had the platform to launch at the death. A masterful final over by Matthews saw three wickets fall and just five runs scored as Pakistan’s effort ended tamely, the home side hobbling to 121 on a pitch that looked like it offered significantly more.Muneeba Ali was the only Pakistan batter to strike at better than a run a ball•PCBMatthews aside, though, West Indies never really managed to get on top of the Pakistan bowlers either. The visitors did get off to a fast start, flying to 38 in the first five, but it was something of a one-woman show, with Matthews striking all five of West Indies’ boundaries in this time. When the spin trio of Nashra Sandhu, Tuba Hassan and Nida Dar came on, Pakistan briefly regained some control, with West Indies reduced to scoring at just over six an over for the next six overs. But it was wickets Pakistan needed, and West Indies were never required to take the risks that gave them a glimpse. By the time Sadia Iqbal prised Matthews out, West Indies needed just 34 to win, and had more than seven overs to do it in. When Shemaine Campbelle was cleaned up by Tuba, there may have been the faintest glimmer of hope for the home side, but the visitors were much too clinical, and had run Pakistan out of road by then. When Chedean Nation sealed the win with a boundary, both sides were going through the motions, and there was a sense of a formality being completed. The third of five T20Is is on 30 April in Karachi, with a win for West Indies guaranteeing a series victory.

According to , the Palace duo could end up staying at Selhurst Park this season and the FA Cup holders are in 'no rush to sell' them, either. Liverpool, Newcastle United and Tottenham are said to want defender Guehi, while Arsenal remain interested in attacking midfielder Eze – but for now, they remain Eagles players.

Guehi and Eze are hugely important figures at Palace and played a key role in their FA Cup triumph earlier this year. The former has a year left on his contract, so if he wasn't sold this summer, Palace risk losing him for free in 2026. Eze has two years left on his deal and reportedly has a £68 million ($90m) release clause. With a few weeks of the transfer window to go, Palace may keep their star duo after all.

Liverpool reportedly rate Guehi at around £40m ($53m) – £10m short of Palace's asking price. Newcastle are also interested in the former Chelsea man, but are not prepared to meet the Croydon outfit's valuation.

Eddie Byrom, Kiran Carlson cash in on inconsistent Leicestershire bowling

Glamorgan finish day one on 352 for 8 after duo reach 80s, Northeast remains not out on 61

ECB Reporters Network24-May-2024Glamorgan benefited from some inconsistent Leicestershire bowling as they finished on 352 for 8 on day one of their Vitality County Championship match at Leicester after being put in on a pitch as green as the unprepared strips next to it.With leading run-scorer Colin Ingram rested, Eddie Byrom (86) and Kiran Carlson (80) were the chief beneficiaries as Leicestershire conceded cheap runs in the first half of the day.The Welsh county slipped from 190 for 2 to 277 for 7 as the home attack fought back before tea, but Sam Northeast, whose name is indelibly linked with this ground after his unbeaten 410 on a record-breaking day here two years ago, anchored some solid resistance in the final session and will resume on 61 not out.Scott Currie, who is at the Uptonsteel County Ground on a season-long loan from Hampshire, finished with 4 for 53, which as it stands are career-best figures for the 23-year-old right-arm seamer. He is likely to find himself shouldering more responsibility in the remainder of the match after Tom Scriven sustained a hamstring injury during the morning session, which means he is unlikely to bowl again in this match.Ian Holland, also on loan from Hampshire but making his Leicestershire debut, shared the new ball with Matt Salisbury and a couple of early edges falling just short of the slips suggested it had been a good toss to win by captain Lewis Hill yet Glamorgan were 96 for 1 at lunch after a dismal morning for Leicestershire’s bowlers.Holland’s struggle for rhythm was understandable after just one second XI match in five weeks since his last first-class outing, yet the same could not be said of the other seamers used as Byrom and Billy Root found the boundary all too easily in the first hour.Leicestershire tightened things up a little in the second hour, yet the one wicket they picked up was something of a giveaway, Root slapping a widish delivery from Ben Mike straight to backward point to fall for 40.Related

Currie’s post-lunch spell brought some cheer as Marnus Labuschagne misjudged a ball that took out his off stump. Currie should have had Byrom on 49 but Peter Handscomb spilled a straightforward chance at second slip.It looked an expensive drop as Byrom and the aggressive Carlson added 83 in just 12 overs and stemming the flow of runs was looking beyond Leicestershire. But they were fortunate again when another Glamorgan error handed them a third wicket as Byrom, with a hundred seemingly in his sights after hitting 13 fours and two sixes, was bowled by Salisbury off a careless inside edge.Carlson went past fifty for the fourth time this season, needing only 45 balls, but he followed Byrom in missing out on three figures. Perhaps frustrated after half a dozen overs without a boundary he launched himself into an attempt to clear the midwicket rope against Louis Kimber’s off-spin only to be foiled by a diving Harry Swindells, on as substitute fielder for Scriven, who took a fine catch. With Rehan Ahmed rested and Liam Trevaskis out with a back injury, Kimber is Leicestershire’s sole spin option. It sparked a good finish to the session for Leicestershire, Currie knocking out Chris Cooke’s middle stump before Mike picked up the wicket of Zain-ul-Hassan in freakish fashion, appealing for leg before after hitting the batter on the toe before turning to discover the ball had looped up and spun back into the stumps.Currie dismissed Mason Crane leg-before the ball before tea, completing a much better session for Leicestershire, who had taken six wickets for 181.Northeast ensured the collapse did not continue, sharing a 62-run partnership with Timm Van der Gugten (32) before the latter became a fourth wicket for Currie after Leicestershire had taken the second new ball, his unbeaten 61 taking his tally for the season to 647 runs.It was a day that – in its early stages at least – reminded Leicestershire followers how much they miss Chris Wright and Wiaan Mulder, who between them took almost half of the county’s Championship wickets last year. It will come as good news, then, that Wright is back in training after spending time out of cricket for personal reasons and Mulder is due back from South Africa in time for the start of the Vitality Blast next week.

Why Eberechi Eze's proposed Tottenham transfer could be held up again as Crystal Palace plan ahead with their talisman

Eberechi Eze’s future at Crystal Palace is once again in the spotlight, with Tottenham Hotspur keen on a move for the England international. However, the transfer could face delays after manager Oliver Glasner revealed the midfielder’s release clause has expired, meaning Palace now have full control over whether their star man leaves before the end of the window.

Eze’s Crystal Palace release clause has officially expiredGlasner insists the midfielder remains committed to PalaceSpurs must negotiate directly with Palace for transferFollow GOAL on WhatsApp! 🟢📱WHAT HAPPENED?

Tottenham have been strongly linked with a move for Eze this summer, but Crystal Palace are standing firm after his release clause expired. The midfielder impressed in Palace’s 0-0 Premier League opener against Chelsea, though his goal was ruled out in accordance with a rarely-enforced law. For now, the Eagles still see Eze as central to their plans, with two weeks left in the transfer window.

AdvertisementAFPWHAT GLASNER SAID

Glasner moved to play down speculation and stressed Eze’s commitment to Palace. He told reporters, “I expect him to be back playing for us against Fredrikstad.

“I’m sorry, it's nothing personal with all of you, but I said it's good advice to the kids, don't always believe what you read, especially on the internet and here's the same. Who knows that this is the truth, what is written? There are rumours and so many rumours and everybody tells somebody something for his own advantage, maybe.”

Glasner continued: “And again, if everything or most of the things that are written about them is true, they couldn't perform like this. The team couldn't be together like this. The team couldn't be committed to each other like they are. It's just not possible. So again, I'm quite calm. But I also know we have two weeks to go [of the transfer window] and I know Eb’s [release] clause is gone, so it's the club's decision, and we will see what happens.”

THE BIGGER PICTURE

Eze’s release clause, previously set at around £60 million, has now expired, giving Crystal Palace full control over his future. Tottenham remain keen, but Palace are under no obligation to sell unless they receive an offer that they see as worthy. With the transfer window closing in two weeks, his situation could drag on until deadline day.
