West Ham fans want Ainsley Maitland-Niles

Many West Ham United fans are eager for the club to sign Ainsley Maitland-Niles after it was revealed that Arsenal are willing to listen to offers for the England international.

The Hammers enjoyed a successful campaign last time out as they finished sixth in the Premier League, which means they will be competing in the Europa League next term. However, they are yet to make a new signing during this transfer window, and they will surely not be able to deal with four competitions without strengthening their squad.

Maitland-Niles could well be a good target for the Hammers, who have reportedly been interested in him in recent months. According to Sky Sports, the Gunners are listening to offers for the £14.4m-valued 23-year-old (Transfermarkt), who spent the second half of 2020/21 on loan at West Bromwich Albion.

On Twitter, @WestHam_Central asked their followers whether they would like West Ham to sign the versatile ace, and the response was generally affirmative. The supporters took to the social media platform to share their thoughts.

Somerset cricketers past and present gather at Taunton Races

The Christmas meeting at Taunton Racecourse on December 28th was a popular venue for Somerset cricketers past and present

SOMERSET29-Dec-2002The Christmas meeting at Taunton Racecourse on December 28th was a popular venue for Somerset cricketers past and present.Watching the steeplechases in front of the main grandstand there were almost enough players to make up a Somerset XI, and it was good to have the chance to catch up with some of the `old boys’.Matt Wood and Keith Parsons were the two current players who I spoke to and both were enjoying mixed fortunes, but there were plenty of faces from the past enjoying a good days racing.Chairman of the First Class Umpires Association Allan Jones was enjoying his day, and nearby was another Somerset favourite Dennis Breakwell, `Jonah’s’ old sparring partner from his playing days. Those who have lived in Taunton for any length of time will recall when the pair could be regularly seen at the end of a day’s play driving into town in a rather dishevelled white Ford Escort van!Merv Kitchen another of the Somerset fraternity who is now a first class umpire was also in attendance. Merv is a keen follower of the turf, in fact during one closed season not so long ago the left hander from Flax Bourton worked as a bookies assistant on local courses.Left arm seamer Mark Davis who now works at Millfield School is another who regularly attends the Christmas meeting but whether or not he had backed any winners it was difficult to tell!A couple of other former players who were present were Keith Parson’s twin brother Kevin who was on the staff at the County Ground for a while, and local all rounder Roy Sully who made one Sunday League appearance in 1985.In addition to the eight who have been mentioned add another three from the numerous other cricketer’s who have been around the Somerset scene at some stage but never quite made it into the first team , who were also at the races, and quite a formidable line up begins to emerge! In the depth’s of winter with the rain pounding against the window it’s interesting to muse on the batting line up of this Somerset XI, before looking in the diary and discovering that the 2003 season gets underway at Taunton in just 104 days.

Liverpool have Saul Niguez bid rejected

Liverpool have had a £34m bid for Atletico Madrid midfielder Saul Niguez rejected, with the La Liga champions demanding more for his services.

The Lowdown: Liverpool linked with Saul move

The Reds could be in the market for a new central midfielder this summer following Gini Wijnaldum’s exit to Paris Saint-Germain.

One player who has been linked with a move to Anfield is Saul, who has been such an influential performer for Atletico down the years. The Spanish giants may be willing to let the 26-year-old leave this summer, but only for the right price.

The Latest: Reds see bid rejected

According to Mundo Deportivo, Liverpool’s bid of £34m has been turned down by Atletico, who deem the offer to be too low.

It remains to be seen if the Reds will come back in for a higher bid or look elsewhere for an alternative.

The Verdict: Worth another punt?

The £36m-rated Saul is a fabulous player, ticking so many of the boxes required to be a success at Liverpool. Indeed, Neil Jones told Redmen TV [via Liverpool Echo] that the midfielder has “got massive admirers” at Anfield.

At 26, he still has a good few years left in him at the top, he possesses quality on the ball – 86.7% pass completion rate in the Champions League last season, bettered by only six Reds players – and works tirelessly for the good of the team, winning 1.7 tackles per game.

For that reason, Liverpool would be wise to make a higher bid for Saul, filling their Wijnaldum-shaped void in the process.

Mohammad Asif, the Pakistan fast bowler, continues to remain in detention in Dubai, with the authorities not yet having taken a decision whether to try him for possession of an illegal substance.Nadeem Akram, the Pakistan board official in Dubai handling the case, told that he was yet to hear from Asif’s lawyers on further developments in the case. Asif had appeared before the court on Sunday, following which the public prosecutor’s findings were referred to the Attorney General. However, Akram hadn’t confirmed whether charges had been pressed against Asif.Asif had been held at the Dubai International Airport on June 1 after authorities allegedly found a banned substance in his wallet. Asif had appeared before the chief prosecutor on June 5, where he made his statement.Meanwhile, Shafqat Naghmi, the PCB’s chief operating officer, has quashed speculation that the government of Pakistan had gotten involved in the case. A number of PCB officials met high-ranking officials in the Interior Ministry and various federal security personnel to discuss arrangements for the Asia Cup and the ICC Champions Trophy, to be held in June and September in Pakistan respectively.”We didn’t discuss the Asif case,” Naghmi told Cricinfo. “Neither did we ask for their help in the matter nor did they offer it. It was a routine meeting in preparation for those tournaments.”Naghmi also said Akram was optimistic that the case would be decided one way or another by Tuesday. If convicted, Asif could face a sentence of up to four years.

Crystal Palace: Fans react to Joe Willock links

Crystal Palace and Newcastle United have been credited with an interest in Arsenal midfielder Joe Willock.

And a number of Eagles fans have been giving their thoughts to the transfer links on social media.

According to 90min, the Gunners have told Willock he is free to choose his next destination ahead of a potential loan move.

The 21-year-old impressed at St James’ Park last season, scoring eight goals in 14 appearances, and it seems he would prefer a move back up north over a Selhurst Park switch to link up with Patrick Vieira.

Arsenal want any loan deal this summer to have an obligation to buy for around £15m, with Palace name-checked as another side keen at the end of the report.

Preece drops huge Aston Villa transfer news

The Birmingham Mail’s Ashley Preece has dropped a new Aston Villa transfer update which will leave fans excited.

What’s the story?

Dean Smith’s side have enjoyed an impressive start to the transfer window thus far, securing the signings of Emi Buendia and Ashley Young in a bid to reinforce a squad which only narrowly finished outside the top ten of the Premier League last season.

In a Q&A for the Birmingham Mail, Preece said: “Can’t wait for Walsall now, looking forward to that one. As for incomings, I’m trying so hard to get some clarity over Julian Alvarez but there’s nothing concrete. It’s all quiet at the minute; agents not picking up and there’s nothing new to report. Training grounds in UK and Europe starting to be busy again which’ll help. I’m expecting 2-3 more additions, though.”

He then added: “A GK, CB and a CAM are most-desired. Nothing close, sadly. Expecting it to pick up next week.”

Fans will be buzzing

Having already tied up deals for Buendia and Young, Villa are well-placed to get the rest of their summer business done in time for the start of the new Premier League season – Smith’s side get their campaign underway with a visit to newly-promoted Watford.

Given how they were involved in the fight for a surprise European place until the final few weeks of the season when Jack Grealish was notably missing through injury, Villa only really need a few key additions to potentially take that next step, rather than a real squad overhaul.

Preece’s claim that a new goalkeeper, a new centre-back and a new number 10 are the “most-desired” targets suggests that Villa are happy with their first team options and are just looking for extra competition – the Midlands club already boast the likes of Emi Martinez, Ezri Konsa, Tyrone Mings, Buendia and Grealish for those respective positions, after all.

Reinforcing the squad and ensuring that if players get injured or perhaps lose form, Smith has the options to change things around and still maintain a high level of quality, will be key to bridging that gap to the top seven.

It’s exactly why fans will likely be buzzing with Preece’s update on where things stand with Villa at the moment in the transfer market.

Meanwhile, Villa must unleash this starlet in the Premier League…

Rewarding patience and near-dream debuts

The plays of the day from the match between Bangladesh and Pakistan in Mirpur

A reward for patience
You would think there are better ways to spend a Sunday than travel to the Shere Bangla National Stadium and brave the rain, hoping the monsoon would be kind enough to spare the tournament opener. Rain, at some point, was a certainty yet the crowds streamed in to fill the half where the less expensive stands were located. They spent the first hour and a half scuttling from their seats in the roofless stands towards shelter as it rained in short, but sharp, bursts. The toss finally happened around half past four but just as the Bangladesh players were preparing to take the field, the covers came on yet again, perhaps as a precautionary measure. Luckily the rain stayed away.One-man show
Salman Butt and Kamran Akmal opened the batting but for the first eight overs it was one man who kept Pakistan going at nearly six an over. Butt raced to 40 off 38 with balls with eight fours and at the same stage Akmal had managed to score only 5 off ten balls. Akmal, however, hit the first six, a slap over long-off in the 11th over.So nearly a dream debut
The 19-year-old Dolar Mahmud, a medium-pacer, came on to bowl his first over in ODIs with Pakistan at 51 for no loss. His first ball came slowly off the pitch to Akmal, who tried to play a forceful drive, and an inside-edge went perilously close to the off stump. Instead of striking first-ball, Mahmud had gone for four. However, he did come back to induce an edge and remove Akmal in his next over.Still at the IPL
Bangladesh’s sole representative at the Indian Premier League was left-arm spinner Abdur Razzak and his first over today was an extension of his IPL experience, where he went for 29 off two overs in his only match for the Bangalore Royal Challengers. Akmal muscled his second ball for six over long-off and later in the over Butt caressed a square drive through cover. Eleven runs came off Razzak’s first over but he recovered to concede only 24 off his next 6.3, picking up three wickets in the process.
Younis Khan was found short in his short stint at the crease © AFP
The briefest of innings
Younis Khan’s first innings of the tournament was a non-starter. He came in at the fall of Akmal’s wicket and was immediately at the other end for the first ball off the 13th over. Butt pushed off the back foot to midwicket and the batsmen set off for the single but Raqibul Hasan’s sliding stop to his right at midwicket made Butt send Younis back. He hurried to make his ground but his bat was just short as Razzak broke the stumps. Younis was gone without facing a ball. Two misses, one hit
Pakistan’s three biggest flops at the IPL were Shoaib Malik, Shahid Afridi and Misbah-ul-Haq. Afridi glimmered briefly today, striking one powerful pull before mistiming his several subsequent attempts at finding the boundary during his 20 off 17 balls. Malik’s innings, 9 off 19, contributed to Pakistan’s loss of momentum during the final overs. Misbah, however, shook off his awful form with Bangalore and struck 39 off 22 balls, including two sixes over long-on and deep midwicket. The final straw
The Bangladesh fans that came out to support their team went through a lot. They sat through the rain patiently and then watched Pakistan’s top-order rattle up a sizeable target. They had something to cheer about when Bangladesh’s bowlers took 7 for 55 in the final ten overs of Pakistan’s innings but that joy was short-lived as the run-chase failed to get off the ground. However, they stuck around even as wickets fell. Hopes of winning faded from difficult to practically impossible and yet they did not leave the stadium. Mashrafe Mortaza’s duck was the final straw. As soon as he edged Umar Gul, they started leaving though some stuck around near the exits. They started filing out again when Dolar Mahmud was bowled for another duck soon after.

Smith targets England's insecurities

After all the kerfuffle that surrounded England’s selection for the second Test at Headingley, a degree of normality has been resumed

After all the kerfuffle that surrounded England’s selection for the second Test at Headingley, a degree of normality has been resumed. Darren Pattinson has been whitewashed from the memory banks (although he may one day be resurrected as a pub-quiz question), and for all the scorn and excitement that greeted Steve Harmison’s return to the squad, he too has been deemed surplus to requirements. And so, despite the selectors’ best Buckaroo imitations, the side that takes the field against South Africa at Edgbaston on Wednesday will contain a solitary change from the team that was unchanged for a world-record six Tests in a row. A tired Stuart Broad makes way for the returning Paul Collingwood, and Ryan Sidebottom comes back in for the luckless Pattinson – who, in hindsight, was only included as insurance against the fitness of Broad’s man-for-man replacement, Andrew Flintoff. Surely the selectors could have found a simpler route from A to B.Graeme Smith certainly thinks so. After captaining South Africa through five often-turbulent years of transition, Smith has learnt all about the destabilising effect that surprise selections can have on a team. Even by the standards he has had to endure, however, Smith felt the Pattinson saga was a pretty poorly managed affair.”No-one really knew anything about him so, if things don’t go well, there is a point where [the selectors] are going to have to answer a lot of questions,” said Smith. “What has surprised us more is the indecisiveness around the England leadership. That has surprised a bit more than the actual selection.”After England’s ten-wicket defeat at Headingley, Michael Vaughan suggested that the “confusion” surrounding Pattinson’s selection had destabilised the team, a remark that caused the national selector, Geoff Miller, to seek a meeting for clear-the-air talks. “Just the calling in, and the discussions, and no-one taking responsibility for it. That surprised me a bit,” said Smith. “Inside the dressing room I don’t see how one guy making his debut can affect a dressing room that has been together for so long.”England, however, have done their best to draw a line under the events of last week, and the early unveiling of their third-Test team is a positive step after the mayhem of the first morning at Headingley. What is more, if there was any venue at which England could wish to regroup after such a dispiriting defeat, it would have to be Edgbaston – a ground that has long been a favourite of the players for the close proximity of the fans, and which assumed mythical properties after the legendary series-turning victory in the 2005 Ashes. For South Africa, however, Edgbaston holds some fond memories as well. It was here that Smith launched the 2003 series with his career-best 277, and just as he demonstrated with his second-innings hundred at Lord’s in the first Test, the prospect of living up to past glories does not faze him. His participation is, however, in some doubt because of the back problem he picked up while batting against Bangladesh A last week. If he does feature, England will doubtless target his lack of mobility should they end up bowling first tomorrow morning. If we can create openings in the top-order, and get to Paul and Ian Bell as quickly as possible, it does allow us the opportunity to put them under pressureGraeme Smith on England’s unstable middle orderSmith admitted that, back in 2003, he had been unsure whether to bat or bowl first, and with a week of unsettled weather on the horizon, it promises to be another tough call tomorrow morning. Steve Rouse, the Warwickshire groundsman, pre-empted the omission of Harmison when he suggested that this would not be a surface for the hit-the-deck bowlers, and should Smith choose to bowl first for the third match running, Sidebottom and Anderson will be hopeful of exploiting the lateral movement that England failed to locate under clear blue skies at Headingley last week.South Africa’s pace attack offers a different sort of challenge, and one that England’s reinforced batting line-up will have to repel for the sake of the series. In the absence of Dale Steyn, who swings the ball at pace from a full length, they will rely on the bounce and aggression of Morne Morkel, Makhaya Ntini and Andre Nel, who will be as fired up as any player in the match in his first Test opportunity for six months. “Andre is an experienced bowler who’s done well over a period of time when he’s played,” said Smith, “and as a captain it’s nice to know you’ve got really good back-up coming into the squad.”The target for all South Africa’s bowlers will be England’s apparently brittle middle order, of which the recalled Collingwood is an integral part. Smith, though admiring of his fighting qualities, believed his team had seen enough already to unsettle him. “He thrives on pressure so we need to bowl well at him to create the chances from the weaknesses that we’ve worked out,” said Smith. “If we can create openings in the top-order, and get to Paul and Ian Bell as quickly as possible, it does allow us the opportunity to put them under pressure.”All series long, even back when England were fielding their six-match unchanged side, Smith and his team-mates were claiming that appearances were deceptive. The events of Headingley have reconfirmed the suspicion that England are not quite as sure of their strongest eleven as they would have their onlookers believe. In fact, the situation in recent weeks has not been dissimilar to the one that befell the South Africans themselves in the last series between the two teams in 2004-05 – when the likes of Mark Boucher were omitted in favour of such ephemeral players as Thami Tsolekile and Zander de Bruyn.”As an opposition team, every time you can see the other team is under pressure, it does benefit you,” said Smith. “We know if we can play really good cricket for the first couple of days at Birmingham, we can maybe open up some wounds and put some certain players under a lot of pressure in this Test.”

Liverpool linked to Philippe Coutinho

Liverpool have been linked with a shock move for Barcelona midfielder Philippe Coutinho as Jurgen Klopp searches for Gini Wijnaldum’s heir.

What’s the story?

According to Mundo Deportivo journalist Francesc Aguilar, the Reds are keen on re-signing the 29-year-old magician this summer.

The Spanish reporter has claimed that the player’s agent is attempting to secure a move back to the Premier League for his client, with Wolves and Everton also credited with an interest in Coutinho, but Liverpool are believed to be the ‘most determined’ to sign the Brazil international.

Fans will be excited

Coutinho left Anfield back in January 2018 to sign for La Liga giants Barca in a mega-money deal, potentially rising to an astronomical £142m. However, things haven’t worked out for the diminutive South American in Catalonia, and after failing to impress in his first 18 months with the Blaugrana, he was shipped out on loan to Bayern Munich.

The Bundesliga champions saw improved performances from Coutinho, with the creative talent bagging 11 goals and providing nine assists in 38 appearances for Bayern, helping them secure the treble along the way.

Upon his return to Barcelona, though, Coutinho’s poor luck returned. A serious knee injury ended his season in December after just 14 uninspiring appearances under Ronald Koeman, resulting in his potential exit over the coming months.

With Barca experiencing severe financial difficulties, the club’s hierarchy are determined to shift several high-earning fringe players ahead of the upcoming campaign, so the Camp Nou could be the perfect place to pick up a bargain.

Although Coutinho hasn’t been at his scintillating best for a few years now, he is undoubtedly a world-class operator on his day and he produced some of his best form during his time at Liverpool under Jurgen Klopp.

Therefore, it’s easy to understand why the German may be tempted to bring the 29-year-old back to Anfield following Wijnaldum’s exit. The Dutch international has left a significant hole in the club’s engine room, but Coutinho has the ability to fill it and would provide a new element to the Reds’ attack.

Klopp arguably never directly replaced Coutinho in his first-team squad, with a glaring lack of goals from midfield last term, and the duo could reunite this summer, helping each other return to the top of their games, catapulting Liverpool back to the summit of English football as a result.

It’s a prospect which could have large sections of the club’s supporters excited as one of their most talented exports potentially embarks upon a return to his former stomping ground.

Reporter says Crystal Palace are in race to sign Maitland-Niles

Crystal Palace are looking to sign Arsenal ace Ainsley Maitland-Niles, according to The Athletic journalist Matt Woosnam.

The versatile Maitland-Niles, 23, has been made available for transfer after failing to nail down a place in Gunners boss Mikel Arteta’s future plans.

Maitland-Niles made 15 appearances during a loan spell with West Bromwich Albion last season but he was unable to steer the Baggies away from relegation to the Championship.

However, Maitland-Niles remains on the radar of a host of top flight clubs, including Palace.

The Eagles, under new manager Patrick Vieira following his appointment earlier this month, face competition for Maitland-Niles’ services.

Newly-promoted Watford, along with Southampton, are also monitoring the situation ahead of the Premier League season getting underway next month.

Maitland-Niles, who has been capped by England five times, impressed Palace fans during West Brom’s 1-0 defeat at Selhurst Park in March, according to Woosnam.

The reporter believes Palace are vying to win the race for the Arsenal man’s services.

Speaking exclusively to The Transfer Tavern, Woosnam said: “Ainsley Maitland-Niles did well last season at West Brom.

“Certainly, he was one of the two players that stood out when Palace hosted West Brom towards the end of the season, along with Okay Yokuslu.

“He would bring an element of positivity to Palace but it will come down to the cost.”
